Lawsuit: Cops dangle man from 2nd floor window, cause his death
2009-11-13 23:02:00
The estate of a man allegedly held by his legs from the second floor window of his home by two Chicago police officers is suing the city and the individual police officers. According to the complaint, on March 10, 2009, police officers Henry Thomas and Patrick Kane entered the home of Matthias Mayhorn without permission, came into contact with Mayhorn on the second floor, threatened him with injury and/or death by hanging him by his legs out of the second floor window, fired a weapon at him while he was hanging out of the window, dropped him onto the pavement below and delayed in summoning medical assistance. Thomas and Kane also interviewed witnesses and investigated the occurrence in an improper...

Cops and monsters
2009-09-03 13:07:00
As a police officer I've always found it useful to have a working knowledge of cryptozoology.  I always figured that if I was familiar with a variety of pseudo-mythical creatures, I'd be less likely to end up dead like the typical cop at the beginning of an old monster movie.  I couldn't stand the idea of dying in the first reel after ignoring the kids who tried to warn me, shooting all 6 rounds from my revolver to no effect, and finally throwing my empty gun at the monster in desperation. Courtesy of Los Angeles TimesSo you can understand why I'm excited about this recent story from Texas. A taxidermist claims that one of his students killed a Chupacabra.  The...
Why cops love the media
2009-08-27 22:10:00
I was driving, listening to the radio, when I heard about a Chicago Police Department officer shooting and killing a knife-wielding man in the Loop this afternoon.  The radio station went live to a press conference given by Superintendent Weis. A female reporter asked a question about why the officers shot, and about the danger to passers-by because of police gunfire.  I can't recall the exact phrasing, but it pissed me off.  The question implied that the reporter who asked it was more concerned about the danger posed to the public by a stray police bullet than she was by the danger posed by a crazed, knife-weilding panhandler roaming the Loop at midday, accosting citizens at random. I'll post more...

The Tweet-Cops — Law Enforcement’s Use of Social Media
2008-10-09 20:01:00
Despite being a late adopter of technology generally, the real estate industry has embraced social media better than most industries have, and arguably behind only politics and technology.  Here’s an interesting use of social media from a completely different industry:  law enforcement. Joanne Fraser, who sells real estate in Los Altos CA, informs me that a local police department (Mountain View) is now on Twitter.  (See here.)  They don’t have a lot of followers or updates yet, but kudos to them for embracing social media as a way of staying better connected to the community. Turns out the Scottsdale police department is also in on this. Neither Scottsdale nor Mountain View, however, are still quite “there.”  They’re using Twitter right now only as a way of disseminating information: 14 year old takes seizure medication. It is unknown when she took it last. She has long brown hair and is wearing green shirt, blue jeans. SPD in area of 28000 N. 59t...

New York: Undercover Cops Find Mosques Discussing Bombings.
2008-07-06 16:19:00
Very troubling news from NY Daily News:A young undercover city detective spent four years in the shadowy world of terrorist wanna-bes - taking part in jihadist discussions and training in parks in the dead of night - to get a handle on the homegrown threat. At great personal risk, he participated in everything from prayers at a mosque to martial arts training under cover of darkness to watching jihadist videos, with many of the activities laced with talk of killing, according to a source familiar with the undercover's investigations. His experiences paint a vivid portrait of the potential for local terror. While the picture is in no way indicative of the city's Muslim population as a whole, it provides insight into its most radical element. The detective spent his time interacting with informal groups of youths and men who shared extremist views - and his experiences illustrate what police say is the potential for radicalization of some elements in the community. He reported that aft...
Canada deploying cardboard cops to nab speeders
2008-06-10 07:28:00
Police in westernmost Canada are deploying life-size cardboard replicas of traffic cops pointing a radar gun at oncoming traffic to try to reduce speeding and road fatalities, authorities said. And these mock-ups are so realistic that while being tested on a Vancouver street this week, “a tow-truck driver pulled up and started talking to it,” Staff Sergeant Ralph Pauw told a press conference on Thursday. Eight of the cut-outs will initially be deployed on city streets, Pauw said. And in case some drivers aren’t fooled by the facsimiles, “there may or may not be a (real) police officer behind one of these cut-outs,” he added.

Another source familiar with the proposal, speaking on condition of anonymity because no deal has been struck, said Reiser, the prosecution and Alameda County Superior Court Judge Larry Goodman would have to sign off on the proposed deal. Under the plan, Reiser's cooperation could reduce his April conviction from first-degree murder to second degree.

CNN Cops Tuesday's Primary Ratings Crown
2008-06-05 14:56:00
Lisa de Moraes Wash Post: CNN clocked more than 3.5 million viewers in prime time. That's a 34 percent lead over MSNBC's more than 2.5 million viewers. It's also a 47 percent advantage over Fox News Channel's prime-time crowd of 2.4 million viewers.Yes, it appears MSNBC edged out FNC in prime time Tuesday. "Many journalists despise TV news. They hate watching it, they hate producing it, and, given the opportunity, they turn it off and ignore it." California professor Tee Vee news students' cable TV smackdown: "...the titillation - fear-mongering crime reports, salacious coverage of the entertainment industries, reporters and anchor people glammed up to look like models. And when TV reports covered more serious issues, including politics, they result as little more than propaganda - talking points served up from two sides, with no analysis testing the claims, beyond petty insults. The broadcast majors among them expressed their revulsion at moving into an industry where "good te...
Stunt Riders give Cops Headaches
2008-06-04 15:00:00
Sgt. John Lago is cruising the Hollywood Freeway when his radio carries the call of another California Highway Patrol officer who has tried to pull over a motorcyclist, only to see him race off at high speed. Both troopers give chase, skillfully picking their way through 10 p.m. weeknight traffic at 120 mph. They radio for a helicopter backup, but the aircraft is too far away. In only minutes, tonight's outcome is clear: The rider of the agile, 600cc Honda sportbike has outrun them. "Bummer," Lago says. "I hate it when we lose a chase because you know the guy's going (to go) on MySpace and brag he outran the cops. It's just going to encourage more knuckleheads." While the CHP officers often apprehend their targets, tonight's disappointment is all too common for this team. In squad cars and on powerful BMW motorcycles of their own, these officers go after what they regard as a growing problem on the nation's highways — riders of hi...
Scarlett swab report deals blow to cops

Scarlett swab report deals blow to copsPreetu Nair | TNNPanaji: British teenager Scarlett Keeling may not have been raped on the night before her death. Swab samples taken from her mouth and vagina have tested negative for the presence of sperms, top police officials told TOI on Tuesday. This deals a severe blow to the prosecution case. The police on Saturday had filed a provisional charge-sheet against the main accused under various sections including rape and murder. SP (North) Bosco George confirmed the test reports have arrived from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad, but refused to comment on the findings. The police claim that a drugged Scarlett was sexually assaulted by prime accused Samson D’Souza and then left in water on Anjuna beach, leading to her death. The police had arrested Samson based on another accused Placido Carvalho alias Shana Boy’s statement that he had seen a half naked (without his trousers and underwear) Samson lying atop the m...

Public kudos for copsGood Work By Police Begets ParadePreetu Nair | TNNPanaji: When the three men in khaki uniform, who had succesfully nabbed the accused involved in the brutal murder of a couple for money in Pilerne, were rewarded for their excellent job, they had a special reason to smile. Instead of receiving a commendation certificate and cash reward, PSI BH Baswani, head constable Shankar Komarpant and police constable Satish Sawant were recognised for their effort in a ceremony in front of their peers. They were rewarded for their performace in public, during a ceremonial parade of the North Goa district police. Held for the first time ever by the Goa police, the parade was aimed at inculcating discipline in the rank and reducing the communication gap between officers and men on the field. “We have now started something we missed out over a period of time. Excellence is rewarded. Besides, shoddy work will be scrutinised,” said SP North Bosco George, who has come ...

AT THE RECEIVING ENDAttacks on cops batter morale‘The Culprits Are Immediately Bailed Out With Help From Politicians’Preetu Nair | TNNPanaji: After the Jaipur attacks, as the country prepares to fight terror, the Goa police is left fighting its own version of terror — increasing attack on men in khakhi by the general public. This is a concern that has bothered the top police officials and has been discussed at length by the police during official meetings. “It batters the morale of the officers and we are really concerned,” said a top police official. The attacks on the police have increased in the last few weeks. These include: * May 4: After a fight broke out between two persons at the Church of Our Lady of the Poor, Tilamol, which was celebrating a feast, an agitated mob stoned a police van and injured many policemen, when they tried to intervene. * May 16: Two traffic cops were assaulted as they issued chalans to two persons near Guirim. The Trooper
2008-05-25 09:01:00
A farmer got pulled over by a state trooper for speeding, and the trooper started to lecture the farmer about his speed, and in general began to throw his weight around to try to make the farmer uncomfortable. Finally, the trooper got around to writing out the ticket, and as he was doing that he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The farmer said, "having some problems with circle flies there, are ya?"The trooper stopped writing the ticket and said "Well yeah, if that?s what they are? I never heard of circle flies."So the farmer says "Well, circle flies are common on farms. See, they?re called circle flies because they?re almost always found circling around the back end of a horse."The trooper says, "Oh," and goes back to writing the ticket. Then after a minute he stops and says, Hey...wait a minute, are you trying to call me a horse?s ass?"The farmer says, "Oh no, officer.
