Should CTA cops fine riders for putting feet, bags on seats?
2012-01-26 18:05:00
The CTA has plenty of rules regarding rider behavior on CTA property. But as far as I can tell, there’s no explicit, fineable prohibition for putting your feet or your bags on the seat next to you. But there is in New York City. Last year, New York cops issued tickets to 7,373 riders for... Read more »

According to the Chicago Sun-Times there are 54 Double-Dipping Chicago Cops living the high life since their retirement. Desi Super – Cops Will Now Control The Roads Of The Web
2011-08-08 11:30:00
What is “Objectionable” what is considered “Okay” has been the cause of debate and discussions for a long time now. And a disconnect on this matter is specially brewing in the Indian cyberspace. And not surprisingly, it has to do with the government jamming content that it considers “objectionable”. What has caused a lot of cries of woes especially by Internet freedom activists because of a new set of rules that allow Internet service providers (ISPs) and blogging sites to remove content which it deems “objectionable” from the Web. In a written statement handed out this Wednesday, Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Information and Technology informed the Lok Sabha about the recent notified rules under the IT Act to regulate and monitor the use of internet. Not only that, the new rules demand that the intermediary notify users not to publish or use information that is abusive, derogatory and even insulting. Furthermore, it states that anything which violates...

CTA, police unite in rail safety effort; more cameras, more cops
2011-06-21 14:15:00
You may have read that the CTA and Chicago Police are stepping up patrols and installing more cameras on rails lines in the wake of a murder at Fullerton and an increase in muggings this year. Here's the 411 on the details, or should I say, 911:The CTA's plans: About 3,000 cameras will be installed at rail stations by the end of the year, doubling the number currently installed. Each station typically will have between 10 and 30 cameras. Installation will happen more quickly by "accelerated bidding process with pre-certified technology vendors," according to a press release. The first cameras are going up at Jarvis, Morse, Granville, Bryn Mawr and Argyle, says a Tribune report. Cameras will be retrofitted to older rail cars,...

Does the village of Montgomery condone its cops calling people "bleepi
2011-03-22 15:30:00
"A bunch of fucking niggers." That's how the police department in the village of Montgomery appeared to refer to Sherida Hughes after a traffic stop in 2009. I suppose I could chalk this up to happening in far west suburban Montgomery, located just south of Aurora on the Fox River. I could chalk this up to the village of Montgomery being backward and countrified. It's still wrong.

Are Chicago cops on steroids?
2010-12-15 19:10:00
An investigation by the New Jersey's The Star Ledger recently revealed rampant steroid use among police officers there, prescribed by a unethical physician looking to make a quick buck. When that doctor died because of side effects from his own steroid use, people started to take notice. But it's not just this doctor or just New Jersey. Steroid use is a big problem in law enforcement, according to the investigation."I really believe if it's not the most commonly abused drug in law enforcement, it's damn close," said Larry Gaines, chairman of the criminal justice department at California State University.More at chicagoreporter.com...
Cops and Complainants
2010-10-28 05:02:00
Lately I've been thinking about how cops communicate with non-cops, and how those encounters can end well or badly.  Two things got me thinking about this.  The first was a party we attended last weekend, to which the police were called by an irate neighbor.  More on that later. The second thing was an exchange I had with one of the nice people at NEMRT (North East Multi-Regional Training). The party was a blast, and featured a fair amount of drinking and general whooping-it-up.  (No, it was not a cop party.)  The party got thrown at a beautiful first floor condo in Buena Park. Some time around 11:30 a squad car pulled up in front and shined a spotlight in the front window. ...
Is Daley balancing the budget by not hiring more cops?
2010-08-13 04:05:00
I have heard the following sentiments expressed by Chicago police officers, and I've seen them repeated in the posts and comments at Second City Cop: "The city is lying about how many cops are actually on the street." "The Chicago Police Department is short thousands of officers." "Manpower shortages are causing safety issues for CPD officers.  We're outnumbered and overwhelmed." "It's getting increasingly dangerous to be a Chicago Police Officer." "Where is the money that the city is 'saving' by not hiring new recruits to replace retirees?" "Why doesn't some journalist dig into this?" In an article that appeared in the Chicago Reader on August 12, reporter Ben Joravsky has written the single best article on the CPD staffing crisis...
Alderman calls for additional 1,000 cops for Chicago
2010-08-06 23:28:00
Chicago needs to hire 1,000 more police officers immediately to keep the city safe, said a Near South Side alderman. A two-year cutback on hiring has left the city 2,230 officers short of authorized manpower every day. The mass hiring would cost Chicago an extra $70 million at a time when the city's budget shortfall has shot up to more than $650 million....
Facebook and Twitter- A Hit With Traffic Cops for Nabbing Offenders!
2010-07-05 08:05:00
Social Networking sites, Facebook and Twitter have found their way to the Delhi Police. No, not for any malfunction case, but for nabbing offenders of traffic! In an effort to manage the traffic situation in the city during the Commonwealth games slated for October, The Delhi Traffic Police has come up with their pages on these popular sites in a bid to request the citizens to show their cooperation in doing their job. The only tool that you require to don your cop hat is just your cell phone camera! The offenders pictures- be it unregistered vehicle numbers, tinted glasses, riders without safety helmets, are posted on the site by the users and the case is registered with the DTP. Users post queries, complaints and suggestions and receive immediate responses from the DTP. One month on and the Facebook page has over 9000 fans where dozens of photos and videos are uploaded everyday. Twitter has over 850 followers. With so many “assistants” roaming around the city, offende...

Squad car cameras: why Chicago cops are wary
2010-03-30 08:22:00
Monday morning's Sun-Times featured this story:Video cameras in cars make some cops uncomfortableBrian Jackson/Sun-TimesThe Chicago Police Department has video cameras installed in about 340 vehicles, according to the article.  The story mentions that some Chicago police officers worry about getting jammed up as a result of the cameras:Privately, some cops told the Chicago Sun-Times they were ignoring the rule to turn on camera systems because they're worried their words and actions will come back to haunt them. They explained they sometimes must use harsh language to establish control over people they stop.To most non-cops, I think, this must seem like a no-brainer--of course there should be cameras in squad cars.  Officers wrongfully accused of misconduct can be easily exonerated, and...
Two Univ of Chicago Ph.D.'s say they were beat up by Chicago cops
2010-03-23 22:06:00
A man with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and another man pursuing his Ph.D. at the school say that certain Chicago- police officers in plainclothes brutally beat them and three uniformed Chicago police officers who responded to the scene told them to "forget the incident ever happened." Matthew Clark, a Ph.D., and Gregory Malandrucco, a Ph.D. candidate, say that on February 7, 2010 at 3AM at Arturo's Tacos on Western Avenue, the following occurred: - While standing up to leave, a plainclothes police officer shoved Malandrucco and glared at him because Malandrucco unintentionally obstructed the officer's path to the cashier or exit. - When Clark and Malandrucco left Arturo's, they found the plainclothes officers in the parking lot, where they...

DUI cops, red light cams, and parking meters: Terrible
2009-12-22 22:16:00
Officer Edward StapinskiEvil trifecta. Traffic accidents and tickets have made for a bad week. A Lockport police officer, Edward Stapinksi, drives with a blood alcohol level of .223, causing a three car crash, killing another driver by the name of Man Wong.Red light cameras are still taking snapshots of people who aren't breaking the law.Parking meters in the city get a hike from $3.50 an hour to $4.25.I'm convinced that we have our priorities mixed up when we don't drop the hammer on cops who drive drunk. There should be more emphasis from top brass on strict consequences when officers of the law choose to have "one too many" and then try to operate a vehicle. Man Wong is gone...
Lawsuit: Cops dangle man from 2nd floor window, cause his death
2009-11-13 23:02:00
The estate of a man allegedly held by his legs from the second floor window of his home by two Chicago police officers is suing the city and the individual police officers. According to the complaint, on March 10, 2009, police officers Henry Thomas and Patrick Kane entered the home of Matthias Mayhorn without permission, came into contact with Mayhorn on the second floor, threatened him with injury and/or death by hanging him by his legs out of the second floor window, fired a weapon at him while he was hanging out of the window, dropped him onto the pavement below and delayed in summoning medical assistance. Thomas and Kane also interviewed witnesses and investigated the occurrence in an improper...

Paralyzed Man Alleges Abuse By Cops and False Charges
2009-09-08 23:35:00
A paralyzed man claims two Chicago police officers pulled him out of his car and caused him to be falsely charged with criminal offenses. According to the complaint, on June 6, 2008, plaintiff Kenneth Courtney was stopped by two Chicago police officers who pointed their firearms at him and ordered him out of the car.  The plaintiff is paralyzed from the waist down and could not comply with the order, the complaint states. Cops and monsters
2009-09-03 13:07:00
As a police officer I've always found it useful to have a working knowledge of cryptozoology.  I always figured that if I was familiar with a variety of pseudo-mythical creatures, I'd be less likely to end up dead like the typical cop at the beginning of an old monster movie.  I couldn't stand the idea of dying in the first reel after ignoring the kids who tried to warn me, shooting all 6 rounds from my revolver to no effect, and finally throwing my empty gun at the monster in desperation. Courtesy of Los Angeles TimesSo you can understand why I'm excited about this recent story from Texas. A taxidermist claims that one of his students killed a Chupacabra.  The...
Why cops love the media
2009-08-27 22:10:00
I was driving, listening to the radio, when I heard about a Chicago Police Department officer shooting and killing a knife-wielding man in the Loop this afternoon.  The radio station went live to a press conference given by Superintendent Weis. A female reporter asked a question about why the officers shot, and about the danger to passers-by because of police gunfire.  I can't recall the exact phrasing, but it pissed me off.  The question implied that the reporter who asked it was more concerned about the danger posed to the public by a stray police bullet than she was by the danger posed by a crazed, knife-weilding panhandler roaming the Loop at midday, accosting citizens at random. I'll post more...
