Spore to have draconian copy protection
2008-05-07 21:54:00
So Spore, which is one of the most anticipated games of the decade, and certainly one of the most technologically revolutionary, is going to have some of the most abysmally restrictive copy protection in the history of gaming.According to various news sites, it will require that you validate your copy online every 10 days, or it will cease to function until you can get online to check it.The flaw in this system is unbelievable. Broadband is prevalent, but not that prevalent. What about countries without wide broadband distribution? Does EA just write them off? Once you've activated once, why the need to do it again and again? If a copy is being warezed, after the first dozen or so attempted registrations EA can simply just shut down that ID. Is there any reality to the thought that people's copies will start off legit, but suddenly become warezed after 10 days? That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard.Anyway the post has a good comparison to Stardock's wildly popular Sins of a S...

Windows Vista Copy Protection Cracked
2008-04-14 07:18:00
More than a year after Windows Vista was introduced, hackers have finally developed a clean crack of Windows Vista. There have been a variety of workarounds for Vista's copy protection before now, but this is the first time someone has figured out a way to install a cracked version that would pass all of Microsoft's various anti-piracy checks. It seems that certain OEMs found the activation process too burdensome and persuaded Microsoft to provide them with a way to bypass it in order to save their own customers the hassle. Hackers figured out how to activate this special "no activation" mode on cracked copies of Vista. I think this is one of the biggest reasons copy protection schemes fail: they almost always creates serious inconveniences for customers, and irritating customers hurts the bottom line. Companies may talk a tough line about fighting piracy, but when push comes to shove, they're not willing to cut off their own nose to spite their face by insisting on enforcing a c...

New HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc Copy Protection Defeated Before Release
2007-05-18 20:57:00
The Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Licensing Administration’s soon to be released patch designed to keep pirates from copying HD-DVDs which has already been hacked. The new volume key used by high-def films scheduled for release next week has already been cracked before it even hits the shops. The AACS LA had invalidated the previous volume key after it was shared across the Internet. Version 3 will be used on all HD DVDs from now on. However SlySoft’s AnyDVD HD program can apparently be used to rip HD DVD discs that use AACS version 3. This is known because although Version 3 will not hit the shelves until next week, pirates have already successfully tested SlySoft’s program with early release previews of the Matrix trilogy. It appears that hackers are able to adapt to AACS revisions and is demonstrating a capacity to assimilate new volume keys at a rate which is making the AACS look very silly. AACS LA chairman Michael Ayers said early this month that the ...
New HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc Copy Protection Defeated Before Release

AnyDVD HD software stillborns latest AACS high-def protections one week before launchEfforts that began in December 2006, and continued through February 2007, lead the way for the circumvention of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc copy-protection scheme. It started with the discovery of individual encryption keys for specific movies titles that would allow the decryption and backup of the protected media. Continued efforts eventually uncovered the Processing Key, essentially a silver bullet that is able to defeat the copy protection of all HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc media currently on the market.Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administration (AACS LA) acknowledged the effectiveness of the hack, but promised that it would soon patch up the hole in future releases. ?AACS LA has confirmed that AACS Title Keys have appeared on public web sites without authorization,? read a statement from the AACS website. ?AACS LA employs both technical and legal me...

EMI may end digital copy protection
2007-02-13 18:12:01
EMI is considering whether to abandon copy protection for digital music, in a move that would set the British company dramatically apart from three principal rivals. The British group behind Norah Jones and Robbie Williams has sounded out online music retailers about switching to the MP3 format, abandoning the proprietary digital rights management technology developed by Apple. However, industry insiders believed that EMI was getting cold feet, because the plan could lead to a precipitate drop in its already flagging revenues. The decision would leave its entire catalogue without any protection in the digital era. This week, Steve Jobs, the chief executive of Apple, to the music industry, in which he suggested that the majors drop their demand for copy protection, to ensure that songs sold from iTunes can be copied on to any digital music player. However, EMI?s thinking is at odds with its competitors, who believe that Apple should instead try to license its copy protection software...
