Coral Reef Squadron red-flagged
2008-05-04 07:30:00
Coral Reef Squadron red-flaggedAs reported earlier about the artificial reef in Phuket, which was about to be set up tomorrow, the procedures had to be halted due to bad weather conditions and is currently postponed to November.PHUKET CITY: The sinking of 10 decommissioned military aircraft – nicknamed the Coral Reef Squadron – to create Thailand’s largest artificial reef has been postponed until November, Tourism Authority of Thailand South Region 4 Office Director Suwalai Pinpradub announced today.Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, K. Suwalai said that the strong winds and large waves that have arrived with the rainy season monsoon have now made it too dangerous to sink the aircraft in Bang Tao Bay.The operation was set to begin today and wrap up with Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat and Thai celebrities attending the final-day festivities on Monday.A date has yet to be set for the operation to continue, K. Suwalai said.In the meantime, the four Doug...

British students to conduct coral reef replanting in Padang
2008-04-06 02:36:00
Some 15 students of Cantebury College, London, Britain will plant coral reef seeds around Sikuai Island, Padang, West Sumatra, on Monday (April 7, 2008) during their six-day stay in the region, a spokesman said. The social activity would be held based on cooperation between tour operator "Sumatra and Beyond", marine tourist resort organizer of Sikuai Island and non-governmental organization (NGO) Minang Bahari Foundation, said Ridwan Tulus, the Sumatra and Beyond director here on Saturday. The coral reef seeds planting activity had become the primary tourism package in Europe, especially among British students, he told Antara. Thus, Sumatra and Beyond would carry out the package regularly to lure European students, especially from England, he stated, adding that the students would plant the coral reef seeds in shallow waters to help in conservation efforts. According to him, the coral reef seeds would be provided by the Minang Bahari Foundation which has a great concern about the co...

Coral Reef Fish Make Their Way Home
2007-10-26 13:26:00
Coral reef fish hatchlings dispersed by ocean currents are able to make their way back to their home reefs again to spawn, says a groundbreaking study recently published in the journal Science। The study, whose findings are considered a major advance for fish conservation biology, was conducted by an international team of scientists from Australia, France, and the U.S. using a novel tagging method to track two populations of fish, including the endearing orange, black, and white reef-dwelling clownfish made famous in the movie “Finding Nemo.”The study took place on coral reefs in a marine protected area in Papua New Guinea. Scientists tested a new method to trace fish from birth to spawning and detect the percentage of fish hatched on one reef that return there to spawn. The techniques used in this study can reveal the extent to which fish populations on separate reefs are isolated breeding populations, or connected by fish movements (known as ‘connectivity’). Such informa...

Coral Reef ecology and facts
2007-10-18 15:39:00
Coral Reef ecology and factsCoral reefs are the most diverse, productive marine communities and create the biggest, most spectacular structures made by living organisms. Local communities exploit their high productivity and tourists admire their beauty and uniqueness. What are coral reefs? Are they plants or animals?A coral reef is a living system comprising of a symbiosis between the animal (polyp) and plant (zooxanthellae). Many polyps aggregate forming colonies that secrete calcium carbonate, creating a collective limestone "skeleton". Successive generations of polyps build on top of previous generations "skeletons" leading to reef formation. Through symbiosis with zooxanthellae, reef-building (hermatypic) corals are the basis of life in reef communities.Where do coral reefs live?Coral reefs are present in the waters of over 100 countries. These are warm (18-29'C), shallow, sunny regions primarily between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. They support over 25% of all known mar...
Fishing Ban Protects Largest Coral Reef In The Philippines
2007-10-18 14:02:00
Reef fish and other marine species can breathe easier with the introduction of a fishing ban around Apo Reef, the largest coral reef in the Philippines and the second largest contiguous reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef।Under the ban, all extractive activities, such as fishing, and coral collection and harvesting, will be completely forbidden.“This ‘no-take’ zone will allow the reef and its residents ample time to recover from years of fishing,” stressed John Manul of WWF-Philippines.The 27,469-hectare Apo Reef off the coast of Mindoro Island is surrounded by mangrove forest, which serves as a source of food, nursery and spawning ground of several coastal fish and marine species, including sharks, manta rays, sperm whales and several sea turtles. In 1996, the reef was declared a national park, but enforcement proved lax and illegal fishing methods persisted. The park was once one of the world’s premier diving destinations, but years of fishing — including by...
The Largest Coral Reef in the World-The Great Barrier Reef, Australia,Photo
2007-09-27 01:39:00
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world, roughly parallel to the coast of Queensland, Australia, for almost 2,000km. Australia has almost 1/5th of the world's reef area and most is located in the (GBR) Great Barrier Reef.Reefs form where temperatures don't fall below 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) for long periods, so are usually found between 30 degrees north and south of the equator. Most require very saline water, also the water must be very clear so light penetrates. Corals found in the Great Barrier Reef contain algae and the relationship between the algae produce oxygen and help the coral to remove wastes. When this relationship breaks down, the coral suffers and becomes bleached. Bleaching is a major worry for those looking after reef health, as coral dies if bleaching is prolonged.Washed by the warm waters of the South-West Pacific Ocean the perfect environment is created for the world's largest system of coral reefs. The Great Barrier Re...
Scientists study Florida coral reef changes

In this photo released by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Sanctuary Program, NOAA marine science coordinator Dr. Steve Gittings photographs a sponge near the Aquarius Reef Base habitat in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, off Key Largo, Fla. On Monday, Sept. 17, six 'aquanauts' began a nine-day mission to study the coral reef off the Florida Keys, with plans to broadcast their dives and research activities over the Internet. (AP Photo/NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program, Mitchell Tartt)KEY LARGO, Fla. - A nine-day mission that began Monday in the world's only permanent working undersea laboratory is like living in a fishbowl in more ways than one: Anyone with an Internet connection can watch the researchers work and hang out 60 feet below the surface.Six "aquanauts" studying changes along a coral reef will work, sleep and eat at Aquarius Reef Base, on the Atlantic Ocean floor about nine miles southeast of K...
Israeli-Jordanian Team Set Up First Artificial Coral Reef in the Red Sea
2007-09-10 09:06:00
From isreal21c.org (click for full article) Take a dive off the coast of Eilat these days and you're liable to find yourself swimming around a huge yellow concrete and wire construction that stretches four yards up from the seabed, is four yards wide, and is full of holes. No, this isn't some strange new structure left behind by an alien race, or cargo dropped from a sinking container shop, this is the first artificial coral reef in the Red Sea. The reef, which was developed by the Israel Nature Parks Authority and a team of academics from the National Center for Mariculture at the Eilat campus of Ben Gurion University, the Inter-University Institute for Marine Sciences in Eilat, the Hebrew University, and the Marine Science Station in Aqaba, is a unique new approach to conservation in the Red Sea and part of a joint co-operative project between Israel and Jordan. "The number of visitors is large and the size of the reefs is limited and too small," explains Dr. Nadav Sh...

Famous Caymans Coral Reefs Dying
2007-05-10 13:06:00
Cayman Islands -- To coral reef-driven tourism industries like those of the Cayman Islands, there could be a greater cost in ignoring climate change than fighting it. Ranked among the top 10 scuba diving destinations in the world, the reef system of the western Caribbean territory has lost 50 percent of its hard corals in the last 10 years in spite of strong environmental laws, scientists say. "We are at a very critical time in the history of coral reefs," said Carrie Manfrino, president of the Central Caribbean Marine Institute on Little Cayman island. "It is like working with a sick patient. How well we treat that patient will determine if that patient survives. We could potentially see the end of hard coral reefs in our lifetime." The Caymans tourism industry, which represents about 50 percent of the colony's gross domestic product, was kick-started in 1957 when dive industry pioneer Bob Soto opened the first scuba diving operation in the Caribbean. Fifty years later, about 2 mi...

Burning Fossil Fuels Erodes Coral Reefs
2006-12-22 15:13:01
The effect of increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide were first reported, and largely ignored, 20 years ago. Today, those early findings are being vindicated as recent research shows that atmostpheric C02 is being absorbed by the ocean and is resulting in a more acidic environment that erodes corals and shellfish the way osteoporosis erodes human bone.Coral reefs support 25% percent of all marine life. Add this research into the already known effects of coral bleaching due to increased water temperatures and you have all the proof you need that the effects of climate change go far beyond what is occuring on the visible surface.
