Aubergine, Green Bean and Baby Corn Curry
2011-11-06 06:48:00
Not a bad proof of concept, though the Aubergines were overcooked as they were pretty mushy. Actually, it needed some heat so leaving the chillies out wasn’t a great idea either. Those issues aside, not a total failure… CameraNIKON D7000Shutter Speed1/60Aperture f/5ISO200
Apple Picking, Corn Maze and Corn Cannons = Fall in New England
2011-09-27 05:52:00
Since the kids have been indoctrinated in the New England tradition of apple picking, we have not missed a fall season of apple picking in recent memory.  And since my Groupon Summer of 2011 is spilling into autumn and beyond, we tried a new apple picking farm featured in Groupon this year. I was first intrigued by the Groupon for Schartner Farms because of the corn maze attraction, or "corn maize".  The aerial photo reminded me of crop circles which I've always wanted to experience first hand.  How do they mow it so precisely??  (The maze, not crop circles.  Crop circles are real, right?  Right??) The kids were a little apprehensive about diving in, but once we had maps in hand, we didn't get too lost (except in the tractor wheel).  Four acres of corn maze is pretty expansive, but we got through in about 20 minutes. And for another new activity, we tried out the corn cannon.  I am so not "country", that I had to googl...
Blazin J's Kettle Corn at Farmer's Market in Koreatown
2011-05-06 06:28:00
So I'm on twitter, I've noticed @koreatown tweeting about this Blazin J's kettle corn all the time, so I decided to stop by and check them out.I'm not a big popcorn fan, I almost never eat popcorns. I hate the popcorn smells at the movie theater, I don't like instant package you can buy at grocery stores. But when I saw them actually making kettle corn, and after I had some samples, I just had to get one. Blazin J's kettle corn were fresh and tasty. I loved it. When I went to, I think they had three flavors, regular, caramel, and cheese. Some people may know, A-Frame restaurant uses Blazin J's kettle corn for their Furikake Popcorn.Mention "twitter" at Wilshire/Vermont farmer's market in Koreatown (every Friday, 11am-3pm), and receive $1 off (so small bag will be $1, large bag will be $3. *all flavors add extra $1).regular kettle corn (small)caramel kettle corn (large)Rating (food): 4.5 / 5Rating (service): 4.5 / 5Repeat: YesBlazin J's Kettle CornPO BOX 2484Santa Fe Springs,...

The Mitchell Corn Palace
2010-09-06 12:39:00
The Mitchell Corn Palce was inaugurated in 1892, as an ingenious way to showcase the fertile lands of South Dakota, and encourage people to move here. Back then it was just a wooden building, but as its popularity kept growing, it suffered several redesigns, and became a national attraction. The pieces of corn are nailed into place, using the designs for guidance. The corn used is especially grown for this task, using a variety of seeds, to produce different colors. The decoration of Mitchel Corn Palace with grain murals, costs the town of Mitchell $130,000 every year. The Corn Palace is a multi-purpose arena/facility located in Mitchell, South Dakota. It is a popular tourist destination, visited by more than 500,000 people each year. The Moorish Revival building is decorated with Crop art; the murals and designs covering the building are made from corn and other grains. It also hosts the home basketball games of Dakota Wesleyan University and the Mitchell High School Kern...

Shark's Fin Melon Soup with Sweet Corn 鱼刺瓜玉米汤
2010-07-27 18:52:00
Both my kids have rather different taste. Usually if one like a soup, chances are, the other doesn't. *faint* Although, I still force ask them to drink it whether they like it or not (cos I spend hours making them), I'll still continue to experiment to get just an additional soup that both will like. My son loves Shark's Fin Melon soup, so you guess it. My daughter doesn't. I tweaked my original recipe little by adding corn here for the sweetness. Results ... I don't have to force her to drink it but she didn't quite like it either. Haiz .... Maybe, you'll like this version? Ingredients: 1.2 litre Water 800g Shark’s Fin Melon, skin and seeds removed and cut into chunks 250g pork ribs 8 red dates 1 piece Dried Octopus a handful Wolfberries 1 Sweet Corn, cut to chunks Salt to taste How to do it: Blanch pork ribs. Trinidad Corn Soup with Cornmeal Dumplings (recipe)
2009-09-29 06:31:00
Corn soup is a street food favorite here in Trinidad, especially at carnival time when vendors ply large pots of it that they spoon into styrofoam cups outside of fetes and clubs. It’s also popular as a Saturday lunch. Chopped pieces of corn on the cob are often included, however in the variation I prepared below I have left them out. Feel free to add them back in though if you want the added texture This post was originally published on February 14, 2007. It has been updated ... Grilled Butter Corn on Cob
2008-11-27 00:00:00
I miss the Pasar Malam (a Malay word for Night Market) I used to go to when I was a little girl. The sellers just laid a cloth or canvas sheet on floor and display what they are selling there. Very much like the the flea market at Sungei Road. Then came the Fun Fair with all the rides and game stall. I can't remember what we ate then because I was only interested in the games. But I do remember the drinks were still in glass bottle form and the stools were all made of wood. I love the game where you try to throw and get your ring to land on some coloured pins for prizes. And not forgetting the knock down cans! Sigh! The good fun old days. And yes, I'm that old. ;)The Pasar Malam nowadays are b-o-r-i-n-g. Even my kids doesn't like to go. Well, except when there are rides. We just have a look if we happen to be there. Usually, we will buy some food back. My son's favourite is the "Shark's Fin" soup. No, no shark's fin in there. ;)For me, I got to have the "bird's nest" drink, w...

Corn and Celery Soup
2008-09-26 02:15:00
Half a year ago, my husband when for his regular check-up and was told that his cholesterol was rather high. Now, if you can recall, I did many fish dishes as that was what he was advised to eat more. Well except for promfet and ikan bilis WITH heads on, as both will bring up the cholesterol level especially the later which is extreme high on cholesterol. Don't even think of using it to make stock. So next time, buy those without the head on.Anyway, back to my husband's little 'diet'. He took very little meat and seafood. His dinner is mostly fish, vegetables and soup. This is one of the regular soup I made for him. Celery soup. Do you know celery can help lower cholesterol? The bad thing is, he hates celery. So in order to bring down the taste of celery. I added onion and corn together with celery to had it sweeter. Sometimes with carrots. It's very much like the 'ABC' Soup except this has more celery in it. It's really not that bad. Maybe, I like celery. ;)Although, his chol...
