Another day, another signal that the market for newly-built homes is improving. Single-Family Housing Starts rose to a seasonally-adjusted, annualized 430,000 units in October -- a 4 percent increase from September and the highest reading in 3 months.

Cook County's poor children have a corner on cavities
2011-07-05 17:00:00
There’s nothing worse than a toothache, many would say. But many of Cook County’s smallest residents may be suffering from rotting teeth, abscesses and mammoth cavities, especially those who are poor. A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office says that just 25 percent of the nation’s children suffer from 80 percent of the...
Are Chicago Home Prices Finally Turning The Corner?
2011-06-28 15:35:00
The Case Shiller Home Price Index for April just came out a few minutes ago and for the first time in many months there are positive signs in the numbers for Chicago. A lot of people must have been interested in these numbers because the S&P servers crashed for 11 minutes after the release of the data. Single family home prices in Chicago fell only slightly from March - down only 0.4%, which is a smaller decline than we've been seeing lately. However, the big news was the condo prices in Chicago were actually up from April by 2.4% - the first increase in condo prices since July of last year. Since then condo prices have been falling like...

They were handing out free hugs today on the corner of Jackson and Dearborn
2011-01-15 01:16:00
When I saw two women embracing tightly on the corner, I just assumed they were sisters and one of them was in the Peace Corps and leaving tomorrow for Africa for 18 months and the other one just found out she's pregnant and now her sister won't be there for the birth and won't even see the baby until it's 11 months old.Or something like that. But then, I saw a sign with something about handing out free hugs and I grabbed one of these....

Corner On The Fun Market
2010-12-27 18:51:00
It is no fair that kids seem to have the corner on the winter fun market.  Sledding, playing in the snow, ice skating... heck even shoveling is fun for them. So I am going to reclaim the winter fun.  Shoveling can be fun.... and a great work out.  Making snow angels- how fun is that? Sledding? even better! Ice skating?  Well, I'll need some practice with that but I remember it being a blast. I can't wait to get out and go skiing again- even if the Chicago Suburbs are not the best place for it- Chestnut Mountain is a great weekend trip! A day skiing and then hot chocolate (maybe with Baileys) Snowshoeing at the Arboretum is also super...

Now, that we’re hunkering down into that dreaded event that is a Pacific Northwest autumn, complete with wind, heavy rain and worst of all, early darkness, I’m recalling a day not so long ago (um, last week). The sun shone, the cormorants murmured, the water sweetly ebbed and flowed. It was the Perfect Fall Day. ...

Parent Corner: CPS's September 1 Cutoff
2010-10-06 23:09:00
Can anyone help out with an answer about how schools deal with siblings who are 10 months apart?:  "My wife and I are parents of two boys (age 3 & 4) that we hope to enroll in school for the 2011/12 school year. Herein lies our problem: Our boys are 10 mos apart and our ultimate wish is to keep them in separate grades, because up to this point they have been in separate daycare classes, have separate groups of friends, etc, etc, etc...How how "flexible" CPS is on their 9/1 cutoff? We have been told that there is little wiggle room, but we want to reach out to any and all resources to see if special circumstances can be...
Rounding the corner
2010-10-06 00:29:00
This week has been, and will continue to be, pretty messy. We're giving Benchmark tests (or as I call them, the dreaded BMs) through Thursday, and that really throws a monkeywrench into our teaching time.So I haven't had as much time to work with the kids as I normally would. However, I have been really pleasantly surprised by how well my kids are getting the concept of rounding, especially given the shorter class periods.Yesterday, I introduced it to them, and, as is often the case, they acted as if they had never in their entire lives heard the words "Estimating," "Estimation," "Rounding," or "Math." (OK, Math they had heard of.) We started discussing why anyone would want to use numbers that weren't exact, as in the case of shopping. I read them a story about 2 kids using estimation to win a jelly bean counting contest. The story was called, "Betcha," and I had to carefully state up front that this was short for, "I'll bet you -- like they are making bets with each othe...

Mark Kirk, Come Out of Your Neutral Corner
2010-04-09 23:09:00
Democrats apparently figure that they have Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk cornered. "Do you," they demand to know, "favor the repeal of our wonderful comprehensive health reform or do you not?" They have a point. Thanks to Kirk' lack of clarity, Republicans also have been asking the same question. Kirk, the moderate North Shore congressman, earlier let it be known that he would "lead" the fight to repeal the entire recently enacted health care monstrosity. Later, he seemed to amend that sweeping promise, suggesting that some things in the new law were bad (e.g. new taxes) and some things worth considering.Continue reading in The Chicago Daily Observer...

Trouble looming around the corner
2010-01-13 13:00:00
As my buddy Coldfish on realgm used to always say, it's the schedule stupid.   The bulls, 16-20, have played reasonably well lately.    They've won 6 of their past 9, and I think all Bulls fans could live with a 66% winning percentage even if a few of those losses were against sub par teams.   Unfortunately, you can't play the crap forever, nor can you play at home forever....

The House at Poo Corner

"Sadly, we don't have a whole lot of time, but give me one quick burst of a story..."That simple request came from Bill Leff, host of ChicagoNow Radio, right at the end of our interview.  It caught me off guard.  My mind raced but I couldn't come up with anything.  I remembered from Commercial Radio for Dummies that dead air is the enemy, so I coughed up a platitude about the holidays.  Bill was gracious, and deftly handled my deer-in-the-headlights moment.  The segment ended. The instant I got outside the studio I thought of a whole bunch of stories I could have told.  Like the one about the guy who went into the meat department at the Jewel and killed...

CTA bus crash on corner of Granville, Sheridan intersection
2009-10-10 09:09:00
CTA bus crash on the corner of Sheridan and Granville Driving home around 1:52 a.m., on Saturday morning, Oct. 10, by the intersection of Granville and Sheridan, I saw a CTA bus (number 1855) that had apparently crashed into the fence of what looks like Sacred Heart Schools located at 6250 N. Sheridan Rd., a few blocks away from the Granville Red Line Station. There was no ambulance around, and the bus was dark. Two police cars were on sight. Right now, it is unclear whether passengers were aboard the bus when the crash happened. The driver was nowhere in sight. More information to come....
Wednesday Random Song: "Brighten the Corner Where You Are"
2009-09-16 23:41:00
Ina Duley Ogdon was a Midwestern wife and mother and Sunday School teacher during the early 20th century. Ogdon had ambitions of becoming a preacher but family responsibilities intervened. Her poem "Brighten the Corner Where You Are" was written in 1912 while she was caring for her sick father. Set to music by Charles H. Gabriel, the tune became a nationwide hit after evangelist Billy Sunday made it a staple of his revival meetings. I first heard it this week on Enlighten 34, the Southern gospel station on XM Radio, in a lively rendition by The Statesmen which I wasn't able to find on YouTube. (It's featured on this album.) Instead, enjoy this old-school version by the Criterion Quartet: This interesting 10-minute video tells the story of Ina's life and the inspiration for the song, as well as its subsequent cultural reception. 1. Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do, Do not wait to shed your light afar; To the many duties ever near you now b...

The Streetcar Turns a Corner
2009-07-21 07:00:00
When the American automobile arrived on the transportation scene at the turn of the twentieth century, the electric trolley still dominated the urban and interurban landscape. The electric trolley's heyday lasted from 1890 to around 1930, but urban ridership in the U.S. peaked in 1923 with 12,
Twittorati, At The Corner of Blogo & Twitter
2009-07-09 15:50:00
Do you know any bloggers of authority? Bloggers who are distinguished not only by how popular their sites are, but also how often other sites link to their blogs. Those that know TMZ, Gawker and the Huffington Post know that the top blogs of the world have slowly stolen the spotlight away from newspapers and mainstream media in general. Those that know Twitter know how important real-time updates have become. Now with the unveiling of Technorati's new service, one can traverse the terrain where the blogosphere crosses the Twittersphere, at an intersection called Twittorati.

No matter how much you beg and plead, Internet, I just cannot seem to force myself to refer to midgets as “little people.” Because I find it’s only half-true. So I went to the Babies’r’us this weekend to buy a gift for a friend, and after printing their registry list and walking around the store, looking at tiny little shoes and tiny little hats and tiny little blankets with teddy bears on them, something came over me and I never thought it would but I’ll be damned if it didn’t. I want a baby. So I bought one. And I know you’re thinking that’s a pretty major purchase for me to have made so nonchalantly and all spur-of-the-moment like. But don’t you go worrying your pretty little head, Internet. It was on clearance. Asian female. Overstock, I suppose, but I don’t care because hey, free mani/pedis for life. And hopefully some day, she’ll grow to love me. For a long time. Right? Right. Know what else I love a...
In Las Vegas, there's an Elvis on every corner.
2009-04-22 15:19:00
When we went to Las Vegas five years ago, we stayed at the "Treasure Island" hotel -- a hotel we picked out because it was supposed to be pirate-themed. As it turns out, the "pirate theme" was only really expressed in the gift shop -- and not much there, even.I don't know what I expected. Pirate bellhops? Well, yes. I expected Pirate bellhops. Because why call it "Treasure Island" if I'm not going to feel like I'm on an island with pirates. An island that also has a bunch of people at slot machines, true, but an island. It's not as though they COULDN'T do a whole theme, after all. The Treasure Island is right across from my favorite hotel in Vegas, The Venetian. Talk about a theme: The Venetian's theme is "Venice," and they WORK that theme. The casino outside and in looks like what I'd imagine a building or buildings in Venice look like, all old-world construction and arches and fountains, and then when you get inside, there's a mall and restaurants with canals righ...

The Corner And The Key
2009-02-22 17:05:00
כ"ח שבט תשס"טImbolgen 28This past shabbat morning (parshat Mishpatim) I woke up to find a light snow had finely blanketed the ground. Cold outside but toasty inside, I pulled my cover shawl further up onto my shoulders over my white flannel poet's gown, got a glass of juice, and entered cozily into the day.Early this Sunday morning, I dreamt a dream of heavy snow covering the ground outside. The heavy snowdrifts in the dream were a few feet high. It was evening nighttime outside. In the dream, my 'husband' and his friend were preparing to take our three kids and his friend's three kids snowmobiling in it. (None of the people in this dream are from my real ordinary life.) The kids had alot of high-octane energy in them, and I needed to reorganize things in the house from all their playing together. So, I bundled them all up and off they went to joyride among the snowdrifts with the two dads. The littlest child - my daughter, about a year or two old - I had bundled up espe...
Within you Without you: Happiness is just around the Corner
2009-02-21 02:57:00
What constitutes happiness? It often turns out that due to our materialistic way of life and thought happiness is located outside of the self. We claim that we have been dealt bad cards but if certain circumstances were to change, we would find true happiness. If only we could meet that perfect mate, we would be happy for all time. If only we had a better-paying and more satisfying job, we would ask for nothing else in this life. If only we were rich and famous, all our problems would fade away.Happiness may be visible but it happens to be just out of reach. It is the tip of the iceberg on a wide open sea. It is the apple dangling in front of the eyes of the donkey and whenever the donkey moves, so does the apple. In fact, most of us have a similar outlook on our religious and spiritual life, a kind of glass-ceiling effect where God is located outside, out there, up there, in the canvass of open skies.Others claim to have had a vision of being ?touched? by God or a spiritual entity....
