PinoyBlogoSphere.com - Giving Back through Corporate Social Responsibility
2008-05-29 05:00:00
Source: www.PinoyBlogoSphere.com - For two years and running in the company I currently work for, we are required to allot four hours of company time (half of a workday) and four hours of our personal time (either we sacrifice part of a weekend or file a half-day vacation leave during a workweek) to extend help to the underprivileged. Last year, 99% of our total company headcount (of about 800) went in groups to various Gawad Kalinga communities around the country to teach children in their makeshift schools. This year, for want to explore other areas where our help may be equally needed, it’s going to be either CRIBS Philippines or Kythe Foundation. It is one thing to be willing to help and another to have the heart to want to deliver the “service” well. I have long realized that I’m not cut as a teacher because I have very little patience around kids in that I easily get annoyed when they randomly move about, cry for no apparent reason, and, most especiall...

should corporate social responsibility be mandated?
2007-12-21 06:31:00
Everywhere you turn, there's another story about a food, population or an energy crisis and then there's the environmental overlay. Sorry to sound like a real downer in this time of festive goodness and copious consumption, but don't we need a reality check and shouldn't corporate social responsibility be legally mandated? Does everyone believe the markets can solve the problems alone?I was driven to this chain of thought by Steve Hardy's excellent review of Thomas Hardy Dixon's The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization. Hardy-Dixon's book explores the complex changes that are happing to populations, food and the environment and gives a pretty damming report. "We can't possibly flourish in a future filled with sharp nonlinearities and threshold effects - and, somewhat paradoxically, we can't hope to preserve at least some of what we hold dear - unless we're comfortable with change, surprise, and the essential transience of things, and unl...

We wish all our clients, partners and friends a very happy holiday ? and thank everyone for their support during the past year (our 5th!). As has become a tradition, we will again be supporting two children?s charities in lieu of sending lots of pretty (but pretty short-lived) Christmas cards. Instead we will support the good ...

Climate Change: the biggest corporate social responsibility
2007-10-30 00:30:00
Photo: Clinton SteedsToday I went to a breakfast hosted by the The Australian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ACCSR) where keynote speaker Paul Hohnen talked about climate change and how businesses must become sustainable. He thinks the basic motivation will be either greed or creed. "Climate change might be prevented as much by changes in technology and financial engineering as it will by changes in consumer habits. On both fronts, business must play a key role. In this regard, corporate responsibility has already played a pivotal role in putting these issues on the agenda, and bringing them to the point where leading companies like General Electric and Philips are integrating them into their core business."I think most corporates are in a transition phase, just starting to work out how to be more sustainable. Even though The Body Shop has a proud history of environmental responsibility and activism we don't claim to be perfect, but we're ...
Race for the Environment
2007-10-29 10:03:00
As reports emerge - out of thick smog in Beijing - of worries about the 2008 Olympics (despite over US$10 billion being spent on pollution control measures), China has announced a major environmental clean-up project, with investment of US$14.5 billion. IHT reports: ?The 108.5 billion yuan (US$14.5 billion; ?10 billion) plan to clean up Lake Tai, ...
Don?t Quote Me (On Dangerous Toys)
2007-10-18 10:24:00
With the many column inches dedicated to dangerous / poisonous / badly designed / recalled toys that were ?made in China?, one might think that there was a global crisis, with children suffering from every interaction with their Thomas tank engines, Pooh bears and other favorite playthings. However, while the risks are obvious, the actual harm ...
Will Protectionism Fly?
2007-09-10 11:03:00
Two stories caught my eye recently, both relating to protectionism ? a risk issue that has been highlighted for some time by ?China Shakes the World? author, James Kynge. In the first story Reuters reports of protectionism in China?s energy sector: ?A strong bias toward local producers and rigid price controls hinder European investors from making ...
Corporate social responsibility now the law in Indonesia
2007-08-23 13:15:00
Indonesia has become the first nation to legislate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) after the House of Representatives dismissed all objections from the business sector to pass the bill on Limited Liability Companies in July. The special committee chairman responsible for debating the draft law initially maintained the decision was based on a comparative study in the Netherlands, Thailand and China. The lawmakers retracted and conceded there was no precedent outside Indonesia, but the country needed such legislation because of the lack of understanding of CSR among Indonesian business people -- evident by their non-observance of existing laws on the environment.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Corporate social responsibility is more important than salary when choosing
2007-08-02 12:43:00
Nearly half of young professionals would turn away from an employer that lacked good corporate social responsibility policies research has found. More than one-third of respondents to a survey conducted by communications group BT said that working for a caring and responsible employer was more important than the salary they earned. As many as 44% of respondents said they would discount an employer that had a bad reputation, while nearly half said corporate social responsibility policies should be compulsory. One-third believe environmental considerations should be the most important topic on the company agenda, ahead of market innovation, flexible working, staff welfare and community investment. A quarter of respondents believe business has the most influence on the future of the planet, second only to governments. Alison Garner, corporate social responsibility communications manager at BT, said: "Young professionals are increasingly looking at corporate social...

Barclays screens supplier spend with corporate social responsibility questi
2007-06-26 11:00:00
Barclays has screened £1.5bn of its supplier spend following the introduction of a corporate responsibility supplier questionnaire last year. The banking giant has so far sent the questionnaire - which examines social and environmental risks - to more than 50 of its suppliers that the company classes as medium to high-risk. These include firms involved in supplying paper, outsourcing services, and corporate clothes. The results of the questionnaire carry a 10% weighting in assessing the suitability of a supplier. The questions cover three main areas of risk: human rights, environmental issues, and business integrity. All existing suppliers will be scrutinised within the next two years, according to the company. "The information helps us to ensure that we engage with the right suppliers and that they have suitable corporate responsibility policies in line with Barclays' standards," the company said. Details of the move were covered in Barclays' 2006 corporate...
Is corporate social responsibility profitable?
2006-08-07 17:09:03
A company in business to make a profit will only do something if it somehow contributes to the bottomline. Decrease costs. Increase revenue. Raise profits. Making "green" products; making a monetary or in-kind contribution to a local charity; appealing to...
