What do Choppers, Jihadists & Anti-Depressants Have in Common?
2009-10-30 02:09:00 So here I was on a lazy Saturday morning barely awake switching on my brand new Bravia for the latest international news as I was smelling the freshly brewed Colombian coffee. It seemed very pleasant outside and I was looking forward to the nice warm weather and a walk by the beach. I was thinking about the fun I'd have for the rest of the day far away from my cubicle when all of a sudden my tranquillity was interrupted by something that sounded like a big explosion. For a microsecond I felt like I was in the middle of Kabul. I looked at the TV in case BBC was showing the latest Taliban attack, but to my avail, it was showing the latest results from the Ashes. Then another loud bang almost made me dropped my precious coffee on my Polo robe. ?What The Flying FAK', I thought? I was neither living in Kabul nor in Baghdad and BBC was just showing freaking cricket! read more

How?s this for Renault?s Corporate Social Responsibility?
2009-09-23 19:18:00 When in 2002 the Benetton Formula One team morphed into Renault it was clear that what the French car giant was seeking to do was to secure brand value from the move, in return, of course, for funding. Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 will undoubtedly have given the brand a major boost ...

eYantra Launches LogoPrint For Customized Corporate Gifting – Is This
2009-09-15 11:55:00 Corporate gifting is a holy grail of HR managers who wish to win over the employees’ loyalty. The marketers are happy because the company also stands to provide more exposure to their brands through the T-Shirts and caps. Now slowly, this is also turning out to be a minor business in itself for a few companies with launch of portals selling branded commodities. eYantra is a leader when it comes to corporate gifting solutions in India. If you work for one of those big names in software like TCS or HCL, you would be well aware of Foostor, the portal for employees to purchase corporate gifting items. With Foostor, eYantra was able to let the company branded ecommerce take off in India. It is a win for the employers who get to build their brand and is also a win for the employees who get products at discounted prices. Foostor has been a success and eYantra surely has gained leadership position there. Now, in a move forward, the VC funded company has recently launched itself into ...

Looking for Data on Corporate IT
2009-08-13 19:31:00 Intalio recently sold Intalio|Cloud (the Managed On-Premises version) to two major customers in Japan, and we're expecting a first deal in Singapore sometime in Q4 this year. We're now working on our go-to-market strategy for the U.S. and EMEA, and are developing various marketing materials to support it, using this presentation as baseline. As part of this effort, we need some third-party validated data on corporate IT. Some of it might be found in analyst reports, some in white papers published by vendors, and some could be derived from verifiable anecdotal evidence. Wherever it comes from, we're looking for it and have decided to crowd-source its gathering. If you know the answers to the following questions, or have some time available to look for them, please share your insight with us. Each answer backed-up by proper references will get you a $25 Apple Gift Card or our infinite gratitude (you pick one). Please send answers to Michael Morel, our new Vice President of Marketin...

Chicago interns move up corporate ladder
2009-07-27 06:00:00 Derek Moody is an intern for Grant Thornton. He's been given quite a lot of responsibilities--none of which entail fetching lattes. (Mike Burley for RedEye) By Tracy Swartz Derek Moody came to Chicago prepared to make coffee. A student at Brigham Young University in Utah, Moody moved to Chicago in May to intern at Grant Thornton, an accounting firm in the Loop. Moody had never had an internship before, so he came to Chicago ready to do anything and everything, including run errands and other expected "intern" tasks. But Moody, 24, said he has yet to ask his co-workers how they like their coffee. Instead, he said he verifies that clients' accounting records are accurate and sits in on...
Welcome to Monolithic Insanity
2009-07-22 03:38:00 Like many others these days, I had to move because of my job. So I ended up in a cubicle. Naturally, I instantly got interested in who came up with that monstrosity. A few months ago, I happened to read an article in Fortune regarding this issue so after a quick search of my bookmarks, I found the story. Interestingly, the inventor of the cubicle, before his 2000 death denounced his creation by calling it 'monolithic insanity.' read more

2009-06-08 00:59:00 By Paul A. Moore6/6/09When AIG got its credit default swaps in a bunch, they were not shut down and reconstituted by the US Treasury Department. They were invited to back a truck up to the US taxpayers vault and shovel dollars into it. They made several trips. What is it now, $180 billion? What were the performance bonuses for AIG's failed managers and traders, $454 million? When Citigroup, Bank of America, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and others were driven into insolvency by reckless banking and investment practices they were not shut down and reconstituted by the US Treasury Department. They were invited to take over the US treasury and to run it themselves. And if there was not enough in the American people's vault, the Federal Reserve offered to print more money for them. What was the bank bailout, $700 billion in its first installment? In the wake of the bankruptcy filing by General Motors, it is widely reported that the "US taxpayer owns a 60% share" in the failed au...

6 Best Wordpress Themes to Set up a Corporate Website
2009-05-23 14:25:00 My love for Wordpress is not new and I have spoken about it quite a lot here. In fact a couple of months, in fact exactly 2 months back from today, I wrote about why I think businesses should build their corporate sites on a Wordpress platform. The post was surprisingly comprehensive coming from me, and today I fulfill a small promise I had made then at least in part. In this post I will list 7 Wordpress Themes that you can use to easily build a corporate wesbite. WP-Coda Revolution Pro (It’s now StudioPress and I have a feeling it is discontinued) VibrantΒ CMS The Station The Cushy (Suddenly this is seeming like a Woo Theme Showcase) Essence There are quite a few other blog templates like these that are becoming popular and being used by a lot of companies as their corporate site. The good part about Wordpress like I had mentioned in my previous post is that it gives a lot of scope fo customize, it has a lot of SEO improving plugin and most themes that you find comply ...

Gradefund: Corporate Sponsorship For Students Who Get Good Grades!
2009-05-21 21:44:00 Last week, I introduced you to Do Good for Debt, an organization that partners individuals with student loans leftover from their educational pursuits with charities that are willing to pay off students' debts in exchange for good deeds. While that may be a helpful way for former students to get back on their feet and start their lives without the burden of financial restraint, there's no denying that it takes away from the philanthropist attitude; so today I will outline another business that helps students overcome the financial repercussions of pursuing a post-secondary education. Gradefund offers a sponsorship-style system, that rewards students for their good grades, that way the better they do, the more corporate sponsors they'll have behind them to pay off their debts before they even have a chance to accumulate.

What's in a Name?
2009-04-06 18:27:00 In its attempt to more successfully market the cheap and plentiful cod substitute, pollack, British supermarket Sainsbury's will now call it by its French name ?colin.' While pollack caught in British waters is in great demand with the French as ?colin,' British consumers aren't as impressed. Retailers believe shoppers are embarrassed to ask for pollack because of its widely known reputation as a cheaper white fish than cod in the same way people may not be proud to show off their generic or private label goods over well-known national brands. I don't know how much sense this revamped marketing plan makes though. read more

Corporate Blogging
2009-02-12 10:25:00 What I have learnt about corporate blogging is this: Online consumers in 2008 are not impressed simply by a professional looking website or a blog bash. A typical online shopper would do hours of research before making a purchase. Informed consumers want to read about what they are interested in, ask questions, get advice and more. None of this is possible on a simple website. A blog can do all of this.A blog helps enormously in getting into the top search engine results. Why? Because blogs by their very nature are updated frequently, and search engines prefer fresh content. Search engines prefer sites which have a lot of incoming links. Blogs can get many more of these incoming links than regular websites because people are more likely to link to information (blogs) than commerce (website). Blogs as opposed to websites have a large and growing content. A clearly visible link from the blog to the main website is very effective form of advertising. Remember the best type of advertisi...

Smerky Sings The Corporate Media Blues
2008-11-24 21:59:00 (By the way, I also posted over here.)In yesterday?s Philadelphia Inquirer, Michael Smerconish told the tale of Martin Eisenstadt, "a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy" who, as it turned out, was a fictitious creation from two filmmakers (Eisenstadt was ?a self-described neoconservative who found his opinions in demand during the presidential campaign? ? tee hee).Smerconish then uses this episode to decry the ?24-hour news cycle (in which) bloggers and even mainstream media work so quickly that they don't really have the chance to check,? according to one of the two perpetrators of the Eisenstadt fiction, with the net effect being that news organizations are suffering (the New York Times, for example, cut 100 newsroom jobs earlier this year, despite revenues of $209 million last year, as Smerky tells us).(By the way, I haven?t ?called Smerky?s number? for a little while now because he seems to be in the process of redefining himself ideologically a bi...
Shame On America Sunday: Corporate Tunnel & Sports Lovers.

I wasn't able to return his call until Saturday afternoon, and before I could return his call, I had breakfast with the in-laws on Saturday morning.During that breakfast, my mother-in-law relayed to me that she had recently received a bill for her "treatments," a procedure she gets every month at the hospital. The bill was for $750, for two months worth of treatments; the bill was her 20% of the cost of the monthly treatments, which she says "keep her alive."After that breakfast, in the afternoon, when I called my dad back, I learned that he had just been diagnosed with, in his words, "corporate tunnel syndrome," a development that he believed stemmed from a wrist injury he suffered at work and the physical therapy he's been going through. Both my mother-in-law and my dad asked me, specifically, to look into their situations because I'm a lawye...
