Cosplay can be seen at public events such as video game shows, as well as at dedicated cosplay parties at nightclubs or amusement parks. It is not unusual for Japanese teenagers to gather with like-minded friends in places like Tokyo's Harajuku district to engage in cosplay. Since 1998, Tokyo's Akihabara district has contained a large number of cosplay cafés, catering to devoted anime and cosplay fans. The waitresses at such cafés dress as game or anime characters; maid (or meido) costumes are particularly popular.

There is a brand new English Language school in Tokyo Japan that caters to the needs of Japanese otaku who want to learn English but may refuse to to take regular English classes for fear of being too different and not fitting in. Teachers and students of the school are encouraged to wear costumes of their favourite anime, manga and video game characters and the costume playing is an important part of getting the lesson across and understood by the students. The school was started by Yohei Suzuki and in a recent interview with Reuters stated that "Otaku culture is taking over the world. Everybody reads manga now. So I thought Otaku people in Japan might be interested in Otaku culture outside Japan." Teaching English in Japan is a definite possibility in the future for me, being as big a geek as I am I still having trouble wrapping my mind around this idea...but, given the opportunity I'd at least try it ^_^. I am sure English Language students in Japan wouldn't mind being taugh...

Cosplay - short for "costume play".Cosplay can be divided into two parts, a Basic cosplay and masquerade cosplay. Basic Cosplay means dressing up and try to physically look like an anime, manga, video games, jrock or jpop character and performing. Masquerade Cosplay means a cosplayer involves in depth with the character that includes speaking like the character, memorizing quotes made by characters and so on. Cosplay costume are different from Halloween costumes. The object of cosplay is to literally become one's character, the intricate details of the costumes are critical. I’m really excited about JAMPcon next week. I still haven’t decided who I am going to go as; Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach) or Iruka (Naruto). Originally, I was going to buy a costume of Rukia in her gigai, but I don’t think I would feel comfortable in a skirt on a possibly cool, early Spring afternoon… So I purchased a Shinigami Rukia costume, and a prop Bushido sword from f.y.e., and I’m ready to go! This photo you see is me as Kakashi-sensei! It was taken about a year ago on my camera phone. He’s a candidate for the next conventions I may attend, but it’s going to be two, or one if I ever make up my mind, characters per convention at the moment. My choices for JAMPcon will probably be like this: Friday: Iruka Saturday: Rukia Sunday: Iruka, Rukia, or regular clothes.
