The cost of living in Australia- HOW MUCH??
2008-07-17 23:50:00
"OK, so you want to go back to university - that's fine. But why Australia?" my Dad was asking, nearly two years ago. Inexplicably, the theme from Family Fortunes ran through my head as background music while I considered my choice of quick fire answers. Was it:(a) "why not?" - the enigmatic reply(b) "it's got better weather" - the chav answer(c) "the laid back lifstyle" - largely based on the holiday I'd just come back from(d) "the cost of living's cheaper" - the uninformed response(e) "I need a change and I wanna spend more time with Dave" - the truth.I opted for a combination of (c) and (d), and steered clear of (e) for more credibility. At that point a big Family Fortune "EH URR" (not there) warning noise should have gone off in my head: Like a lot of poms, I really did think living in oz for two years was going to be cheaper than blighty. Doh!So it was with growing dismay that after arriving, all excited and optimistic, I soon found out the truth: Which is that with only a ...

2008-06-01 03:18:00

The government said it wants to double the payment next year. Cost of Living Update: Food Items
2008-04-29 10:03:00
"Look at these lemons," said my wife recently as I walked into the kitchen. The pack of four lemons had a price tag of 12 riyals. "They were a riyal each not long ago."I realised it was time for an update on the cost of living. I don't believe in giving estimates of how much it costs to live in a country, because it is different for everybody - some people survive on less than a 1000 riyals a month (although survive rather than live is the appropriate word) - while others struggle on 20,000. One thing you should do before accepting a job is build some slack into your cost of living expenses. Unless Qatar abandons the dollar peg, prices will continue to rise. The cost of goods here were taken either from Carrefour or from Family Food Centre, two of the major food stores in Doha. On balance, Carrefour has proven to be the cheaper of the two.Exchange rates:The riyals is roughly equivalent to the following:1 riyal = 0.27 US dollars/ 0.14 pounds / 11 Indian Rupees / 11.5 Philippine Peso...
500 ML Coke for 100 Yen
2008-04-27 10:51:00
I was craving a bubbly soda and I’ve hit the jackpot! I’ve seen soda in the (estimated) 16oz/500ml plastic bottles just like the U.S. but they run about 150 yen. A while ago I went from convenience store to convenience store to see what the different stores offered and I found a 500ml can of ...
Cost of living
2008-04-23 16:26:00
Is it me or has everything become really expensive! I am absolutely skint and the daughter’s had to have new shoes. She had a pair of shoes and a pair of trainers - from Clarks - and it cost £50!! We are told as Mums that we MUST get our tots feet measured every few weeks but it’s so bloody expensive! They don’t make it easy for us do they? I nearly fell through the floor when the cashier told me I had to pay £50 and then she had the cheek to try and sell me the shoe creams that would be best to protect them! I used to work in a shoe shop and I know for a fact that they get commission on selling what is known in the industry as “sundries”. When I worked in a shoe shop I was only a teenager and I used to hate asking people to buy the creams - hardly anyone bought them anyway. The husband really annoyed me though - even though she’s gone up a shoe size and HAD to have new shoes, he decided she didn’t! He said she wasn’t crying in pain...
Expats look abroad for cheaper cost of living
2008-04-03 02:00:00
The high cost of living in the UK is creating widespread disillusionment among many Britons, to the point where many are considering emigrating, a newspaper has said. A report in the Telegraph stated that many British people are thinking of packing up and leaving for another country. This was largely attributed to the current state of the UK economy, which has led to increases in the prices of groceries, fuel and other necessary expenses. People were also said to feel unhappy with their rising tax burden, with council tax in particular flagged up as a particularly unpopular charge. Therefore, many are looking to overseas property as a way of avoiding these payments and reducing their outgoings. The Telegraph commented; "It's hardly surprising many British homeowners are seriously thinking of selling up and moving overseas." Earlier this week, a poll of expatriates by NatWest revealed that the vast majority believe they are financially better off now that they live a...
Don't You Make Excel Spread Sheets Featuring the Cost of Living Across the
2008-03-31 15:37:00
Last night my husband came into the kitchen, a bit bored since our oldest daughter had his laptop and our youngest was downstairs doing the playstation Dance Mat (so the television was taken). He isn't one for 'reading' or doing odd jobs around the house so instead, he sat at the table and watched me working at the kitchen island bar with my laptop. As I worked I was commenting to him about the

Cost of Living Increases Need for Debt Management
2008-01-24 05:39:00
In Britain, the cost of living seems to be steadily on the rise. More and more people are struggling to make ends meet and subsequently the nation's debt is spiralling out of control. One reason for this is that taxes and interest rates are increasing at a faster rate than wages, leaving thousands of workers out of pocket and unable to meet ever-increasing demands for money. They are finding it difficult to cope with the payment of everyday bills along with the necessary food and heating. It's a scenario that is becoming all too common in Britain, and sadly, it's only set to get worse. As more and more adverts appear on the television promoting credit cards and loans, the temptation for some people to get quick cash is overwhelming. If this strikes a chord with you, you may be in need of some debt management. This involves assessing your debts, first of all, and trying to come up with a way to manage them more effectively, in a way that won't compromise your standard of...

Help needed with higher cost of living in Singapore
2008-01-04 23:24:00
Help needed with higher cost of living in Singapore S’poreans urge Govt to do more to ease impact of hikes in transport, food prices By Gabriel Chen  THE rising cost of living and other bread and butter issues were the hot topics at last night’s public dialogue session to prepare for the Budget debate in March. Retirees, civil servants and salaried workers were united in demanding that the Government do more to alleviate higher transport costs and food prices. ‘The current hike in taxi fares - it’s becoming ridiculous,’ said Madam Adeline Chan, as she appealed to the Government to keep prices more affordable. ‘When I go to the market, I end up carrying a lot of things, but taking a taxi has become a luxury.’ Madam Chan was among the 30 participants from the Chinese-speaking community that bounced ideas around at the two-hour session held at the Grassroots Club in Yio Chu Kang. ‘Why do Singaporeans go to Malaysia and import milk powder...
Hot 2008 topic: The rising cost of living in Singapore
2008-01-04 23:19:00
Hot 2008 topic: The rising cost of living in Singapore By Goh Chin Lian  WHEN Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang announced last November that inflation could hit 4 per cent or 5 per cent in the first quarter of this year, analysts and consumers sat up. It would be a ‘historic high’ in the 25 years since 1983. The previous high was in July 1991, when it hit 4 per cent. But today, some analysts are even more pessimistic, predicting that inflation could surge past 6 per cent on the recent wave of increases in taxi fares, electricity tariffs and the continued rise in oil prices. Views are also divided on whether inflation will taper off by the second half of the year, averaging around 3 per cent, or persist at current levels. The way the numbers are looking, the impact of these increases is not only on the low-income and retirees living on their savings, but also on the middle-income, MPs tell Insight. Among them, those who feel it most are the ones who earn too much...
Bahamas: Cost of Living Soars For Bahamians
2007-12-29 04:08:00
Cost of Living Soars By Candia Dames - Nassau, Bahamas: Bahamians are paying more for everyday goods and services as the cost of living continues to climb amid weakening economic growth. As an example, the Department of Statistics says in its latest consumer price index report that Grand Bahamians paid 21.19 percent more for electricity in the month of November compared to the previous month. New Providence consumers also saw a continued increase in the Consumer Price Index during that period. The report says the Consumer Price Index for Grand Bahama showed "a considerable increase" and the CPI for New Providence also "moved forward." In New Providence, the major groups that helped moved the CPI forward were: clothing and footwear, medical care and health and food and beverages. Increases were also noted for transportation and communications, housing and other expenditures. In Grand Bahama, the housing index was the leading group with an increase of 4.21 percent. This was fol...

Cost of Living in Qatar: Inflation, Rent and Pay Rises
2007-11-29 16:29:00
Inflation has increased again in Qatar, largely due to rents which rose by nearly 30% in the period July - August, according to the Gulf Times yesterday.Inflation has also been helped by the declining dollars, and these latest figures could help speed the demise of the doomed dollar peg.Worryingly, the figures are higher than for neighbouring countries such as the UAE, which face many of the same problems.Meanwhile, one expert has estimated that rental prices will continue to rise for another two years, after which supply should finally meet demand. The message is clear for potential residents - make sure accommodation is included in your contract! However, it's not all doom and gloom, according to rumour mongers, at least for public sector workers. The whisper is that Qatar will be following Dubai with a massive pay increase.Dubai recently raised the pay for government workers by 70%. There is a lot of competition in the job market between Dubai and Doha, and rumours have been circ...
Reverse Mortgages & The Cost of Living
2007-11-29 00:12:00
The Pension Rights Center raises an interesting point: Does your pension have a cost-of-living adjustment? Don’t be too quick to say year. While state and federal pensions have COLAs, that’s unlikely to be true with private programs. If you get $5,000 a month today then even with small amounts of inflation it will buy far less than ... read more

Cost of living in Indian cities not too expensive afterall?
2007-11-27 05:38:00
Now that I am moving back to India, one of the aspect that I am closely looking at is the cost of living in Indian cities. Contrary to my belief, one of the recent surveys showed Indian cities not being too expensive compared to its counterparts across the globe, even after sharp rise in rupee and booming economy. The survey conducted by Hong Kong-based ECA International showed that Mumbai, most expensive city in India, ranks lowly at 177 worldwide and poor 24th in Asia. I had always been under the impression that Mumbai was one of the top expensive cities in World let alone Asia. One of the reasons may be that this survey does not consider Real Estate.

S’pore way to fight rising cost of living works: PM
2007-11-12 08:33:00
THE cost of living is rising, and the Government is helping Singaporeans cope with it, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday. While many people elsewhere would look to their governments to keep prices low, Singapore’s approach is different, and Mr Lee believes it is one that works. Its aim is to get the basics right - housing, jobs and affordable necessities. ‘We help, we do a lot, but we don’t help by keeping the prices individually controlled,’ he said at a dialogue at the People’s Action Party (PAP) annual convention. ‘We help by making sure that the low income are able to pay for their necessities, able to earn a living, able to have a roof over their heads.’ While Singapore has gone through years with a stable cost of living and very low inflation, he acknowledged it might be tough to maintain such stability going forward. Prices of flour, food, energy and even chicken are going up, and people are understandably worried, he ...

Cost of Living in Qatar: Accommodation
2007-10-08 12:04:00
It's noticeable that rents do not seems to be increasing at quite the same rate as they were a year ago. However, the decreases in rent that were hoped for after the Asian Games have failed to materialise. Which is a shame, as the high rents have forced many families out of Doha, often to be replaced by more transient bachelors. The high prices no longer seem to be driven by demand, but by landlords holding out in the hope of achieving good rents or of rents sufficient to service the loans taken out to purchase or build the properties. In this short post we have noted down prices as advertised in a local newspaper. For more information about renting accommodation in Qatar see our website article: Renting in Qatar. For comparison purposes, exchange rates at time of writing: 1 Qatar Riyal is equal to 27 US cents, 11 Indian Rupees or 12 Filipino Pesos. Cost of Living: Budget Indian Restaurants in Qatar
2007-10-07 23:13:00
The Cheapest Food in QatarIt?s been a few months since we did any posts on the cost of living, and with inflation still sky high we thought it was time to start again. This time we are going to look at the cheapest way to eat out in Qatar. If you are Indian ? especially if you are from Kerela ? there is good news for you. Without a doubt Indian food, much of it from Kerala, often provides the best value there is around. In addition to the table below, many residents choose to pay a restaurant monthly. QR250 to 300 will buy you two meals a day for a month in a typical Indian restaurant. Before we hit you with our list of prices, it is worth noting that there are plenty of medium and high class Indian restaurants. (We particularly recommend the Chingari Indian restaurant in the Ramada ? see our restaurant reviews here.) However, the focus of this post is on budget food rather than the range of cuisine available. For comparison purposes, exchange rates at time of writing: 1 Qatar Riyal is ...

Cost of living in Dublin

Cost Of Living in Barbados Out Of Control Like A Runaway Freight Train
2007-07-18 11:36:00
Organized Response To High Prices Needed Published on: 7/17/07. IS ANYONE INTERESTED in the welfare of the lower-income workers in Barbados, or have we become a society where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Every day in Barbados one can hear of some increase in goods and services – from food to telephone, flour to gas. What is really happening in Barbados? Does anyone realize that a chicken in some supermarkets is at least $20 and that some families of five or more cannot afford to eat a chicken until on Sunday? How a single is mother to food, clothe and school her children and still get herself to work every day of the week? Who are we to complain to? Who is looking after our interest? We do not have the money or the power to fight a battle, but the cost of living in Barbados is killing our society little by little. Yes, I know we have to try to survive but it is becoming increasingly difficult month after month ...
Illegals Force Cost Of Living Increase
2007-07-09 05:53:00
It will now cost 25 dollars more per month to maintain my household. This community passed a one billion dollar bond issue this past November to build seven new public schools. ( 4 elementary, 2 middle, 1 H.S.--- plus more buses, drivers, and teachers ) Due to unexpected, and uncontrolled population growth over the past few years, our schools have become overcrowded. Our State Constitution and State Law requires that ALL children receive an equal education. It was simply not anticipated that we would need these schools so quickly, therefore; the funds were not collected or made available to build them. The reason that Planners did not forsee this population increase is that many of the new students are the children of Illegal Immigrants. I do not see this as a failure on the part of The Office of Growth Management. How could they know that the population of Illegals would increase by over 200,000 in such a short period of time ?? This State is 2nd in the nation as a destination for...
