In Southeast Asia, a Counterterrorism Strategy That's Working
2008-06-09 17:10:00
According to today's New York Times , a number of counterterrorism experts and governments have concluded that JI and other major terrorist networks in Southeast Asia have suffered significant setbacks in the past three years. The Times article found that the major elements in combatting the terrorist groups were effective law enforcement, heightened intelligence, ongoing military operations and "an erosion of public support." The implication is that an actual strategy, implemented over an extended...(read more)
Virtual Assassination as a Counterterrorism tool
2008-05-28 20:54:00
As part of the virtualization of terrorism it is worth considering what if any terrorist tactics can be applied in this new paradigm. One tactic, which can probably transfer from the real world to cyber environments is assassination, or in this case virtual-assassination . The tactic of assassination has value for a number of reasons. It can remove competent or charismatic leadership, damage morale and as a side effect can force an increase in security. So how would all this work in cyberspace? You...(read more)

Al Qaeda Officially Hates The Counterterrorism Blog
2008-04-16 22:04:00
When I started this website in January 2005, I never envisioned that that Al Qaeda would target us for a hit piece over the Internet. Well, voila , the blessed day has arrived. The wonderful folks at the SITE Intelligence Group found the item below on Al-Ekhlaas, one of Al-Qaida's central messaging forums on the Internet, which has begun a new series in English titled, "Watching and Monitoring the Jihad Media Watchers." They passed along the item below to Evan Kohlmann , who sent it to me, and I...(read more)
Of Art and Science and the Epistemology of Counterterrorism
2008-04-16 16:48:00
Is counterterrorism more of an art than a science? That question may be irrelevant, since Americans take pride in practicing both effectively. We have plenty of world-class artists, as well as experts who tell us what art is meaningful and most likely to withstand the test of time, and why. We lead the world in government-sponsored scientific research. Few qualified scientists today have not been tempted to relocate to the U.S., for such a move would allow them to most effectively practice their...(read more)
Coming To A Law School Near You: The Upcoming Merger of Counterterrorism a
2008-04-08 05:46:00
Doug Farah’s recent post about our complacency in dealing with the problem that is Saudi Arabia dovetails well with one of my pet causes: showing that counterterrorism and human rights go hand in hand. That our most reliable social critics (and multilateralists) are refusing to condemn the deplorable human rights record of much of the Arab world, I have argued, is a symptom of partisan politics and an eagerness to find fault with what we are doing in counterterrorism. The same thing is happening...(read more)

Something amazing happened on the day of the London subway bombings, which occurred at 8:50 a.m. on July 7, 2005. By the end of the day, as authorities continued to pick up body parts, the most comprehensive account of what happened came not from CNN or BBC but from the Wikipedia . The 14-page summary was the collaborative effort of some 2,500 witnesses and experts. Is it any wonder that the U.S. intelligence community has seized at the promise of wiki and blog technology, and established classified...(read more)
Fired Pentagon Counterterrorism official getting support from Military lead
2008-01-11 21:43:00
It’s really disturbing when one of the country’s top experts on Islamic Jihad is fired because of other Islam apologists in the Pentagon. How can we win the war on Islamic jihad when our top brass are firing any tough critics of Islam? doesn’t look good….At least some military leaders are showing their support. Some ...
A Different Kind of Counterterrorism
2008-01-01 19:36:00
Stories like this are why I started the Newsvine group Operation: Hearts and Minds: Photo by U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Kimberly A. Green. Coalition forces of the Green Zone Committee hosted a day of fun for Iraqi boys and girls from Baghdad, Dec. 29. The children participated in small sessions of learning to tie knots, carve soap statues and make sit-upon pillows in bright colors. Between sessions, the children and Coalition forces practiced their soccer skills. ?I like coming to learn new things,? said Sa?naa, a young girl participating in the knot tying session. ?I have never tied a knot before.? This is a very important mission. It may seem like something small and insignificant, but this is a counterterrorism mission of a different sort. ShareThis

The UN's Counterterrorism Opportunity
2007-12-05 22:49:00
A piece I wrote for the Guardian Online on the Council of Europe's latest report on the UN and EU terrorist blacklists. In mid-November, the Council of Europe -- the author of last summer's highly critical report on alleged US secret prisons in Europe -- issued its latest assessment of global counterterrorism efforts. This time, the council took aim at the terrorist lists maintained by the UN and the EU, charging that these blacklists are "totally arbitrary" and "violate the fundamental principles...(read more)

The Promise of Mathematics to Counterterrorism
2007-12-04 15:50:00
This last week while I was on vacation in California, two articles caught my attention. On the Counterterrorism Blog , Roderick Jones described how virtual worlds are helping Western governments combat terrorism, by offering realistic computer-based simulations to government personnel involved in operational decisionmaking, and as communication platforms. Meanwhile, an article in LifeScience , by Heather Whipps describes the utility of academic mathematics to fighting al Qaida. These articles pick...(read more)

Brazilian Counterterrorism Efforts

In March, Brazilian authorities drafted a new antiterrorism law instituting stiff penalties for a variety of violent acts committed by both individuals and organizations. The new legislation, expected to pass Brazil’s congress in a modified form, will likely be used to target criminal gangs from Brazil’s indigent favela neighborhoods, not Middle Eastern terrorist groups operating ...
