Take Pearl Jam and Green Day as instances. No Pearl Jam album will ever become another Ten and no other Green Day album could overcome their 1994’s Dookie, American Idiot might have sold so much better but it will never be another Dookie! The last time they made a significant dent in the Billboard charts was their single "Accidentally in Love" from the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Of course they will always be known as the band that sang "Mr. Jones".One time 90s hit makers haven't often faired well in the new millennium. With that against them, the Crows also decided to make this sort of a concept record. We recorded it when we first formed Counting Crows but never really played it again. I still actually like that song. I never used it because I was kind of ripping off Peter Gabriel when I was singing it. Now that I think about it, I was sort of ripping off Rickie Lee Jones too. There's a line in "Traces of the Western Slopes" on Pirates where she sings "There's a thin thread of light that keeps you stranded?" That one's a little further off, although that was, and is, one of my favorite records and I definitely owned it then and had listened to it a million times when I wrote the words to "Lightning".
