New Era of Stability in Some African Countries: Christopher Welch
2012-01-13 23:30:00 The Gold Report: Most of your coverage universe at Ocean Equities consists of precious metals juniors with exploration- or development-stage projects. Why do you cover these types of companies? Christopher Welch: It’s the end of the market where our expertise has the biggest effect, particularly since my colleagues and I are either geologists or experienced industry professionals. We can look at ground where we know it’s going to be prospective. We can look at the very early-stage exploration results and know if they are encouraging. We still cover some big, producing companies. One of our biggest companies under coverage is Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. (KGI:TSX), which is a growing intermediate producer. But we’ve had such an effect on . . . → Read More: New Era of Stability in Some African Countries: Christopher Welch

Bribe Paying Countries. China Is Second Worst.
2011-11-14 15:48:00 Transparency International has just come out with a new ranking of bribe paying countries, entitled the 2011 Bribe Payers Index (h/t The Diplomat). This index "ranks 28 of the world’s largest economies according to the perceived likelihood of companies from these countries to pay bribes abroad. It is based on the views of business executives as captured by Transparency International’s 2011 Bribe Payers Survey." Not surprisingly, "companies from Russia and China, which invested US $120 billion overseas in 2010 and are increasingly active in global business, are seen as most likely to pay bribes abroad. Companies from the Netherlands and Switzerland are seen as least likely to bribe." Though I know there is no wholly objective way to measure a country's scale of bribery, I am always impressed by Transparency International's rankings because they always correspond fairly closely to my own "sense" of what is going on out there and the same is true of thi...

The good all scams: new countries, same tricks
2011-09-20 10:19:00 This blog post could have been titled also as “A trip from Nigeria to Libya”. Perhaps one of the best-known email scams is the Nigerian letter scam and its many variants. The http://pandalabs.pandasecurity.-com/es/wp-admin/post-new.phpini-tial email tries to convince recipients that there are several million dollars which cannot legally leave Nigeria unless transferred to a foreign account. The fraudsters offer a commission to the recipient of the email for helping them get the money out of the country, but ask for an advanced fee from the intended victim (under a myriad pretexts depending on the particular variation of the scam). However, the whole operation is a fraud, and you will lose any money you pay. These kind of scams are among the first ones in the Internet era, dating back to the 80′s (yeah, that’s a long time, where many people haven’t heard yet about the Internet.) And they work, they will be always there as long as ...

Are high school trips to foreign countries safe?
2011-03-10 14:57:00 I went to Italy on a class trip when I was 15. On the first night, our teacher/chaperone allowed us to go out ... at night ... by ourselves ... in Rome. So, we did. And, we went to a bar. And, my two friends ordered beer (I didn't drink) and started talking to some Spanish boys (I only spoke Italian). So, I left. Yes, I left!! I walked back to the hotel ... at night ... by myself ... in Rome. How stupid, right?! I would've been safer at the bar. I'm reminded of this today because of the recent news on the man allegedly involved in Natalee Holloway's disappearance and I am grateful that ~1/ I made it back...
World’s Top 10 Friendliest Countries
2011-01-10 03:20:00 01. Ireland Centuries of turmoil, conquest, famine and subsequent immigration have certainly taken their toll on the Irish: it’s left them with a deliciously dark sense of humour and a welcoming attitude towards strangers. That famous ability of the Irish to find craic (fun times) in boom or bust times means you’re always in for a treat. Here is the list of top ten friendliest countries of the world, after the break… 02. Samoa What’s this? Samoa reckons they have ‘the world’s friendliest people’? Hmmm, trouble is there’s no ratifying body for such a claim, meaning the Samoans have to contend with the challenge of Fiji, which also self-applies the title. Though readers can rest assured that Samoa harbours lovely and warm people. 03. United States Blamed for the coming of World War III, the Anti-Christ, Bon Jovi, Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson, rampant street crime and noise pollution through overloud talking, Americans just take it all in their ...

Two weeks, Three Countries and Seven Cities
2010-09-05 02:56:00 Two week travel in three countries is defintely tiring when its a business travel. A measure of that is felt when sleep comes without any effort and lack of desire to do any physical exercises. Visit to ' Gadget Capital of the World' ' Sex and Spiritual Capital ' and 'Population Capital' gave a chance to see contrasting lifestyles that are slowly fading in this global era. All in one Wash basin - Remote sensing water, foamed soap dispenser and dryer. A new gadget in the realm of Toto - a ubiquitous name in Japan Toilet Industry. Hotel Toyo at Osaka is now Ramada but it abandoned old refrigerator that housed cans in horizontal position . Would there any technological marvel that has surpassed my observation of previous visit of 5 years ago ? Visit to Yodobashi in Osaka rekindled the memories of previous visits. It used to be TV era , then came Walkman era , DVD and PlayStation era ans now ? It is struggling to keep interest with US gadget iPhone and 3D display on PC. Englis...

After India, BlackBerry Faces Problems In Other Countries
2010-08-06 05:57:00 The United Arab Emirates has outlined plans to block BlackBerry e-mail, messaging and web browsing services. Following suit, Saudi Arabia is ordering its mobile operators to halt BlackBerry services throughout the kingdom starting this Friday. India has already notified BlackBerry maker in no uncertain terms that it must share its data with the government’s intelligence agencies to continue operations in the country. Further to this, Lebanon and Indonesia have also joined the list of countries concerned about the BlackBerry network and started assessing its services. Reason The governments of various countries cite a potential security threat because encrypted data sent on the devices is moved abroad, where it cannot be monitored for illegal activity. Thus, messages, SMSes, emails sent through BlackBerry devices cannot be monitored by country’s intelligence agencies for security purposes. Thus the cause of concern is that BlackBerry services can be used by militants for commu...

Asia Tops Twitter World – India 4th Among Asian Countries
2010-07-06 08:50:00 A recent study by Semiocast, a micro-messaging company in France, reveals that Asia has outshined North America as the biggest user of Twitter. They contribute about 37% of the total tweets in the micro-blogging site. Major contributors of this feat are Japan, Indonesia and South Korea. It was also found that USA, though being the first twitter nation, contributed just about 25% of the total tweets. This is 5% lower than what it was in March 2010. Check the graph below Though the US is going at the right pace, Asian countries are quickly picking up. The continent wise share of tweets now goes this way: Asia- 37%, North America- 31%, South America- 15%, Europe- 14%, Africa- 1.5% and Oceania- 1.5%. If we see the Asian region, Japan leads the trend, followed by Indonesia and South Korea. India is at fourth place with less than 1% of the total tweets on Twitter. Though India contributes less in terms of the quantity of tweets (india contributes less that 1% of total tweets), the social...

4 Years, 5000 Posts, 100+ Interviews, 172 Countries.. WAT A Life!
2010-06-27 08:21:00 4 years.. Feels like a lifetime to me.. A life time of learning.. June 27th 2006 was the day WATBlog was born as it had its first post on that day.. Its been four years since and we have crossed quite a few landmarks and yet I feel so dissatisfied as to the amount we still need to achieve. We started with 1 post or story a day and our early stories were not more than one para! Have a look at our first one here. We have grown from that and today have 5000+ posts on Web, Advertising & Technology, over 100+ video interviews on WATShow and we reach over 172 countries in a month! We started with WATShow next which was a video interview section and we were surely amateurs then if you saw our first attempt! But our latest one is miles better than that. In short we have come a long way. Ive always believed its not where you are but how you got there is what defines who you become. We have got here through a lot of pain, effort and overcoming challenges. Being a self funded startup (Ive ...

Reds On Duty For Their Countries
2010-05-25 00:14:00 Three Man United players were involved in England?s unconvincing 3-1 win over Mexico at Wembley this evening. Rio Ferdinand led out England as skipper but it didn't get off to the best of starts. Defensively England looked disorganised and shaky, especially during the first 10/15 minutes. Ferdinand was taken off at halftime, replaced by Liverpool?s Jamie Carragher. Michael Carrick had been poor for Man United during the 09/10 got off to a poor start at Wembley; he couldn?t take control of the game and was substituted in the 62nd minute. It wouldn?t be a surprise if he isn?t named in the 23 man squad, who will travel to South Africa for the World Cup. Surprisingly Wayne Rooney played the full 90 minutes, which was a risk considering it is a friendly and the criticism that the Wembley Turf has had over recent weeks. Rooney didn?t have a stand out game but he did have one or two good chances at goal. We didn?t really see much from United?s potential new signing (subject to a wo...

Should Teams Stop Players From Representing Their Countries?
2009-08-20 15:20:00 The Dallas Mavericks are one of many teams that have not allowed their players from playing for their respective countries this summer. Dirk Nowitzki wasn't allowed to represent Germany, while J.J. Barea wasn't allowed to play for Puerto Rico. This issue creeps up with teams all the time.I'm going to tackle it from a team and players standpoint, then give my thoughts on it.If I pay guys millions of dollars to play basketball, why risk fatigue or injury for something that doesn't affect what your team's doing? That's how owners think. They think more about what it does for their endeavor, rather than the players themselves.I think of the case of Zydrunas Ilgauskas. A couple years back, he wanted to play for Lithuania. The Cavs declined because of his long injury history. While Z is now healthy for the most part, I'm sure the Cavs would still not allow it. That's just how these teams are with guys that get hurt. But then you look at what the Spurs and Lakers have done. The Spur...

We recently told you how Twitter planned to hit a whopping 1 billion users by 2013. Twitter seems to have big plans, but it also seems to be going through an indentity crisis. From discussing varied monetization plans to Google, Microsoft, other Twitter-based acquisitions to modifications to the RT (Retweet), the Twitter Management covered several features, including the problems Facebook was causing it and how to ensure that the Employees are happy. The discussion also raised concerns on overloading Twitter with too much. Techcrunch’s article though is here. Targeting Customers in Different Countries: Do it the Right Way!
2009-02-16 04:36:00 Got customers in different countries who you want to specifically target? This can be a difficult task, and one which was also the topic of discussion recently on the HighRanking Forum.Barry Schwartz over at Search Engine Roundtable weighed into the discussion advising that it is best to have "two different sites on TLDs (top level domains) that match that country. So if you want to target the US and the UK, have one US site on the .com and one UK site on the co.uk and make sure your content is localized for that market."However HighRanking administrator, Randy takes this concept further by adding:When you're using a .com domain name you're not really targeting the US market. You're targeting the entire world. It's one of those double-edged swords we get/have to deal with. In that .com is a worldwide competition. Not a US one. The good edge of the sword being that since pretty much all US based sites use .com (as opposed to the almost never used .us) you end up with decent wor...

2008-09-21 19:20:00 From Radio Netherlands WorldwideBrunei, Malaysia and Bangladesh have halted imports of Chinese milk products following a similar move by Singapore earlier this week. The measures are the result of the melamine scandal which has claimed the lives of four babies in China. More than 6,000 babies fell ill after drinking formula milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. The Chinese authorities are trying to limit the damage by strict inspections and massive recalls. The European Union has introduced additional inspections although no suspect Chinese milk products are being sold there. The US authorities are also concerned about possible public health risks. Our Country Doesn’t Appear in the List of Home Exchange Countries
2008-06-10 15:33:00 Occasionally we receive emails and phone calls from potential home exchangers who are interested in joining ExchangeHomes.com, but are reluctant to do so because they cannot find their country included in the list of Countries, either in the Quick Search on the Home Page, or on the Detailed Search page. If there is currently no listing for a particular country, then quite correctly, that Country doesn’t show up in either of the Country Search Lists. However, immediately a member registers their membership from a country not currently represented, and enters details for both the relevant continent and country on the Registration Form, when the listing is saved to our database, the country in question instantly appears in the Country List. Similarly, we have been contacted by members and visitors to the web site who have been exploring the listings and noted one in an otherwise not represented country. They’ve returned for another look only to find that the country is no l...
