Sometimes we have to do things that suck, and unfortunately, today is one of those times. Brady and I decided to retire The 9513. Yep, big time suck. Believe me, it was a hard decision, and one I wish we didn’t have to make, but I could hardly find the time to write this announcement, ...
Album Review: Sunny Sweeney ? Sunny Sweeney EP
2011-01-19 13:00:00
Despite being considerably shorter than the anticipated full-length sophomore release, this uncreatively titled collection actually contains more of Sweeney’s own songwriting than Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame, the 2006 record that first set fans and critics abuzz about the prodigiously talented Texan. In fact, Sweeney has cowritten every one of these five tracks—and that’s mostly for ...

David Masciotra and Bill Malone at the Wisconsin Books Festival. William Faulkner once said that authors and literature enthusiast are like "people who breed dogs." They're an eccentric group that is tripped out on their hobby, and they "have odd conversation like dog-breeders would discuss cross-breeding."  On Friday (Oct. 1st, 2010) I arrived in Madison, Wisconsin to lead an assembly of dog breeders at the Wisconsin Books Festival. The coordinators of the WBF graciously invited me to share a stage with legendary country music historian Bill Malone--the retired history professor who has written the bestselling Country Music USA, along with Don't Get Above Your Raisin': Country Music and the Southern Working Class and his latest, Working...

2009-12-17 17:41:00
The Academy of Country Music announced that eight nominees will now be eligible for the fan-voted entertainer of the year prize at the 2010 ACM Awards. They’ve also merged the top new male and new female vocalist categories into one top new solo vocalist category and split the new duo-or-group category into top new vocal duo and top new vocal group categories. The newest single from Rodney Carrington’s Make It Christmas CD, “Camouflage and Christmas Lights,” isn’t a novelty song like it’s title might suggest, but instead pays tribute to the troops who can’t be home during the holidays. Watch the video on YouTube. In the first of a two-part list, Country California’s C.M. Wilcox checked off the best albums of the year. This year’s Tin Pan South songwriters festival will be held from from March 30-April 3. The folks at Hear Ya recorded an exclusive live session with Lissie. She writes beautiful country-tinged songs that were like A...
Fast Ryde ? ?Make It Rain?
2009-09-23 22:02:00
Boasting a repertoire filled with titles like ?That Thang,? ?Ridin? Dirty? and upcoming second single ?Make it Rain,? James Harrison and Jody Stevens–the two men behind the new Republic Nashville duo Fast Ryde–seem to be betting their career aspirations on their ability to spin phrases from prominent hip hop songs into slick pop-country fare for ...
Album Review: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ? Speed of Life
2009-09-23 16:12:00
It’s been five years since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released an album. Though they haven’t exactly been resting on their laurels, this interval between records isn’t too surprising: After all, once a band’s been together for 45 years, don’t you think they’d get a little bored with it all? Listening to Speed of Life, ...
Jason Aldean ? ?The Truth?
2009-09-22 23:10:00
Songwriters: Brett James and Ashley Monroe. Jason Aldean definitely knows what his fans want and expect?country songs about country life and country living…as long as they don?t sound too, you know, country. Sure, you can throw in a fiddle or a steel guitar, as long as those instruments don?t take away from the drums and electric ...
Joe Nichols Rediscovers His Passion For Country Music
2009-09-22 19:02:00
Joe Nichols has had a rocky road on his climb to country music stardom. For several years, Nichols fought alcohol addiction?and a music industry that can encourage a hard lifestyle. Now, Nichols is back with a new album, Old Things New, that hits stores on October 27. The 9513 caught up with Nichols to chat ...
Rosanne Cash with Bruce Springsteen ? ?Sea of Heartbreak?
2009-09-22 16:12:00
When Rosanne Cash turned eighteen, her father gave her a list of what he considered the 100 essential country songs. By way of an eleventh studio album, she recorded a dozen of them with a loose, jazzy backing band and an array of guests including Jeff Tweedy, Elvis Costello, and Bruce Springsteen. Without that backstory, The ...
Your Take: Regional vs. Mainstream
2009-09-19 14:00:00
I reviewed Texas honky-tonker Kevin Fowler’s new single “Beer Season” this week, and the comments section brought up some interesting points on the pluses and minuses of being a regional artist. Fowler is a mainstay in the Texas country music scene, but the only songs he’s written that have reached mainstream success have been recorded ...
Randy Houser ? ?My Kind Of Country?
2009-09-18 20:20:00
Songwriters: Dallas Davidson and Randy Houser. Randy Houser debuted as a balladeer of uncommon skill with the soulful ?Anything Goes,? but it was the Adkinsesque rocker ?Boots On? (in the vein of, but not quite as interesting as, ?Honky Tonk Badonkadonk?) that very nearly took him to the top of the charts, blocked only by Jason ...
Album Review: The Band of Heathens ? One Foot In The Ether
2009-09-18 18:31:00
The Band of Heathens has taken something of an unorthodox approach in its ascent to Americana notoriety. The Austin-based quintet made two live records and amassed a legion of fans before releasing its self-titled debut in 2008. Now, the band is back with its second effort, One Foot in the Ether. Fans of Cross Canadian ...
Friday Five: The Year?s Best Bird Songs
2009-09-18 14:24:00
Birds are creepy, as anyone who’s seen a certain Hitchcock film knows. But from the great speckled bird to Dolly Parton’s little sparrow, these hollow-boned, beady-eyed creatures are something of a country music fixture. Let’s give a listen to some of 2009’s bird songs. 5. “Basket of Singing Birds” – Missy Raines & The New Hip Jazzy ...
A Conversation with Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd
2009-09-17 13:00:00
Early in the 1970?s, a hybrid of rock and roll, blues and country music became immensely popular with a collection of artists from the heartland of America, and was appropriately deemed southern rock. Often thought to be too electric guitar-dominated for country radio at that time, groups like the Allman Brothers, the Charlie Daniels Band, ...
Anna Garrott ? ?What A Way To Go?
2009-09-16 19:03:00
Songwriters: Charlie Black, Bobby Fischer, Phil Vassar Anna Garrott?s first album came out last year on J&V records, and this is her debut single for Blue Steel Records. Unless you?re heavily into the independent country music scene or are a personal friend/family relation of hers, you?re probably never heard her name until just now. If her ...

Today we celebrate the 57th anniversary of the nuptials of Ronald Reagan and his beloved Nancy. Her strength and affection helped him become the great man that he was. A Classic Thanksgiving in 2008 – Football, Country Music, Motorsports, Ca
2008-11-27 20:43:00
As I sit here in my bedroom watching the Titans vs. the Lions, yeah what a game, keep in mind that going into today, the Titans were 10-1, while the Lions were 0-11, yeah that’s a good match up, but hay what are you going to do, its Thanksgiving and I am watching Football, sounds good to me, by the way, the score is 36-10 Titans at halftime. Personally I am a New England Patriots fan, when it comes to football for me, I will watch a game if I can and it really doesn’t matter the teams, although a Patriots game would be my first choose.Anyway, first I would like to wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving and a special Happy Thanksgiving to all of our troops. Today is a day to relax and give thanks, and on this day which started with getting up a 9am-10am to watch the Macy’s day parade on television, this year it was on CBS, because I wanted to watch Sugarland perform, I only got the chance to watch and listen to one song, but I like the song “Settlin’”, what a voice Jennifer ...

Country Music I Like Despite My Better Judgment
2008-07-31 10:00:00
Music has always been a big part of my life, I grew up playing the Chopin while rocking out to my Def Leppard and INXS on weekends. I love jazz, alternative, opera, classic rock, classic classical, even movie soundtracks, Broadway and orchestral arrangements. The only musical genre I dislike is Country. Well I'm not big on New Age either but that's beside the point.I say this all with caution because I recognize that saying one hates Country music is something like saying one hates the flag, Abraham Lincoln or Lost and I know I'm setting myself up for angry mail. But the first part of a cure is admitting you need help, right? So though I can't handle the twang, the ethos or the clothing Country music spawns there are a few--very few--songs that could be considered "Country" music that I like. Maybe even love--though I'm not sure I'm prepared to admit to the "L" word yet.I suppose I should dedicate this list to my grandfather who is a die-hard Country fan. Not the Toby Ke...

Album Review: Jewel - Perfectly Clear
2008-06-04 15:00:00
Perfectly Clear is absolutely magnificent and gloriously country. But only for three minutes and fifty-five seconds. That’s the duration of “Anyone But You,” a starkly classic heartbreak ballad, co-written by Jewel and Wynn Varble, which is startling in its traditional aesthetic and delivered with unexpected authenticity and uncalculated emotion. The track opens with a gentle ...
Book Review: Sing Me Back Home: Love, Death, and Country Music by Dana Jenn
2008-06-02 20:45:00
It begins with a fitting quote from Hank Williams, “You got to have smelt a lot of mule manure before you can sing like a hillbilly.” Part memoir, part history, part analysis, Dana Jennings sometimes waxes poetic about the country music he loves in Sing Me Back Home: Love, Death, and Country Music. Specifically, country music made between 1950 to 1970, or a time period he still refers to as The Great Depression. The Great Depression we know from the history books had ended by then, but poor people—Jennings’ people—didn’t see much difference in being dirt in the ‘30s and being dirt in the ‘60s. And that’s who the music was made for by people who had been there. “Country music knows broader and deeper truths about the twentieth-century American Dream, universal truths that resonate well beyond the music’s original audience. […] If you truly want to understand the whole United States of America in the twentieth century, you need to understan...
Album Review: Eleven Hundred Springs - Country Jam
2008-05-30 15:04:00
In conversation, as well as in my writing, I?m often dismissive of current, corporate, country music radio, so it?s typical to field accusations of ?elitism,? of trying to pigeonhole country music?s sound into an early 60?s George Jones mold for narrow-minded nostalgia?s sake, and of requiring that every song have the pretense of earth-shaking ...
Sugarland - ?All I Want to Do?
2008-05-30 03:55:00
I?ll say this much about Sugarland: they?re not afraid to be pioneers. Unfortunately, as much as ?Stay,? with its sparse, acoustic and percussion-less arrangement, was an anomalous example of a great country song, ?All I Want to Do? marks a new frontier for bad country songs. There have not been many truly great ...
Jessica Simpson - ?Come On Over?
2008-05-29 15:46:00
Songwriters: Jessica Simpson, Victoria Banks, Rachel Proctor. Jessica Simpson’s debut “country” single, which amounts to three minutes of step-by-step instructions pertaining to the exact method by which you will leave your house/apartment and “come on over” to hers, is, without question, one of the most pointless songs I’ve ever heard. But what were you expecting, ...

In one way, Julianne Hough could be considered the first member of a new generation of country singers. This demographic shift, and the coincident thematic divergence of radio singles, ...
Entertainment Weekly Provides a Primer for Country Music
2008-05-22 00:39:00
Entertainment Weekly magazine has assembled a list of the 25 Country Albums You Need to Hear (Even If You Hate Country Music). Included are classics from Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, newer artists like the Dixie Chicks and Miranda Lambert, artists who are better known as Americana than Country like Steve Earle and Gillian Welch and country-rockers (and pure rockers) like the Flying Burrito Brothers and Elvis Costello.Overall, though, this is a pretty fine list of the historic breadth of country music, something that you wouldn't realize if you just listened to current country radio. We've broken the list into veteran (began recording in 1985 or before) and modern artists.Veteran ArtistsGold - Hank WilliamsAt Folsom Prison - Johnny CashCarnagie Hall Concert - Buck Owens and his BuckaroosThe Complete Reprise Sessions - Gram ParsonsThe Best of - Merle HaggardCoat of Many Colors - Dolly PartonElite Hotel - Emmylou HarrisRed Headed Stranger - Willie NelsonThe Definitive Collection ...

Album Review: Cory Morrow - Vagrants & Kings
2008-05-21 12:08:00

Garth Brooks won a life time achievement award and his wife Trisha Yearwood made an appearance as well.
