Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez: A walking contradiction
2012-02-06 15:07:00
Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, in my opinion, is a walking contradiction. So much so that I seriously doubt she can be trusted when it comes to protecting the rights of “everyday citizens.” If, however, you are connected to say, the former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and his cluster of political cronies, well... Read more »

Peotone: Jesse Jackson Jr. needs to stay the hell out of Will County

Will County Board Chairman Jim Moustis has had my vote before and will continue to get it so long as he stays tough on the “Peotone Problem.” Now, the reason I choose to call it a problem is quite simple – we don’t need that third airport in Peotone if airlines have repeatedly said they... Odds are you need to appeal your Cook County property taxes

After seeing just how inaccurate Zillow’s home price estimates are it occurred to me thatĀ  property taxes suffer from the same problem – i.e. wildly inaccurate home value estimates are resulting in thousands of people overpaying in property taxes and thousands of others paying far too little. Baseball America ranks the Kansas City Royals minor league system as the best in all of baseball. All those consecutive years of losing have brought them some really high draft picks, and they've used those picks on some of the best blue chip prospects in Major League Baseball. There's been a change in the structure/hierarchy of the system last year; and as it stands the Low A affiliate is the KANE COUNTY COUGARS The Cougars are one of six minor league teams located in the Chicagoland area (the most of any metro area); they are the only one affiliated with a major league team. The other five: Joliet Slammers, Lake County Fielders, Gary Southshore Railcats, Schaumburg Flyers, and Windy...
ESSEX COUNTY TO BE ADAPTED TO FILM
2011-06-06 18:25:00
Visual effects supervisor John Dykstra has set up his first feature film directing gig called Super Zero, which is an adaptation of the comic book Essex Country: Tales from the Farm. Dykstra most recently worked on the film X-Men: First Class, which was a pretty incredible movie for those of you who haven't seen it yet.Tales of the Farm was created by Jeff Lemire, and was adapted into screenplay form by John Carr. The film will be shot live action, but will include heavy special effects sequences. The story is described as being edgy, but family-friendly. The story follows an orphaned 10-year-old who goes to live on a farm with his uncle. As their relationship grows strained, he befriends the town's gas station owner, a former pro hockey player, and the pair escape into a private fantasy world of superheroes and alien invaders. The comic book has won several awards and according to Variety "the producers' plan is to "make a big splash at ComicCon, where Lemire and the publisher, T...

Cook County Board: Where a Politician Refuses to Say Something Like a Norma
2011-04-27 19:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston You gotta hand it to new Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Not only has she risen above her goofy name and won a highly important political position, but she's achieved the art of almost saying something that she means. Of course there's another thing you have to hand to her. For a Democrat she's been doing a fair bit of cutting of the Cook County budget. She could do far more, of course, but at least she's doing something. Anyway, back to the "almost saying something she means" thingie......

DuPage County property values down, taxes up
2011-04-20 17:55:00
You might be thinking that you'll be able to lower the property tax bill on a home you're planning to buy in, say, Naperville based on the fact that you're buying the home for 30% less than it sold for 4 years ago. Think again. According to this Daily Herald article, the average tax rate for DuPage County's 372 taxing bodies (schools, municipalities, park districts, etc.) increased by 11.6% as a result of increased spending. The increased spending will translate to a 5.7% increase on the average real estate tax bill, despite the fact that the total value of DuPage properties decreased by 5.9% - the first drop in 40 years. If you're buying a home in DuPage, budget an...
Is Winnetka Cook County's teardown capital?
2011-04-04 22:52:00
View Winnetka teardowns & new construction in a larger map The current issue of Crain's Chicago Business (subscription required) reports a moderate resurgence of the teardown phenomenon in suburban Cook County. According to the Crain's article, which was based on a recent study published by Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies, Winnetka earned the "teardown capital" moniker by seeing nearly 8% of its residential parcels redeveloped from 2000 to 2010. Several years ago we linked to another study (no longer online) finding that nearly 10% of Winnetka's housing stock had been torn down and rebuilt between 1996 and 2003. We also suggested that, despite the to-be-expected preservationist lamentations cited in the Crain's article, most of the redevelopment had been relatively...

Leasing wieners and talking to your dad about it, renewing your friendship vows, starting dress lines for anorexics with big tits, taking children to the hospital for papercuts...you know...STUFF. I guess we should start with Gretchen and her face o' fillers. Remember when we liked Gretchen? Remember? Remember when she was sorta pretty and fun? Then she was dickmatized by Slurpy Shellingly and she became this angry, evil, frozen faced weirdo? Yeah...I'm not really into Gretchen anymore. She's kinda nutso. Like her pretend businesses of makeup and handbags are really sitting in the corner of her house with a steno pad with Slade...
Sex, booze, sleep and overtime at Cook County waterparks

Toni Preckwinkle takes on county workers-- gently
2011-03-17 15:30:00
The dirty little secret that many of our government agencies have- that would not work in the private sector- is that the union contracts allow for tenure or seniority to supercede merit or qualifications for job positions. Take Illinois' Department of Children and Family Services, where most positions are employed by AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal employees) members. Most, if not all, union positions at DCFS are filled according to length of service and not merit. Many positions are staffed by people with over 30 years experience who simply are not qualified to do the work they are doing as they lack the practical experience to fulfil the job requirements. Preckwinkle said she has a problem with pay raises based upon length of employment rather than based upon employee merit and performance. Amen Toni.

DuPage County Local Election Guide
2011-03-05 18:20:00
It's that time again.  April 5, 2011, is election day for towns, school districts, library boards, and other extremely critical and largely ignored local positions.  This year's election will be more important than most.  In an average year the main issues are basic administration.  But the financial collapse is beginning to hit local governments hard. The unlucky winners of this election will get the loveless job of deciding what cuts to make.  They will have to navigate a shoal of miserable options in an effort to lead our communities through this crisis with our basic quality of life intact.  We should select these representatives with care.Early voting starts Monday, March 14th and continues through March 31st.  A complete list of early...

A 40% raise at a time when Toni Preckwinkle wants across-the-board cuts in areas that affect public safety and/or the prosecution of criminals.

Tennessee County School Board Fires Teachers Union
2011-02-05 17:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Now this is more like it. Back in October of 2010 the Summer County, Tennessee School Board decertified the Sumner County Education Association (SCEA), the union for county teachers, because it no longer satisfied the law by counting as members fifty percent plus one of the total number of employees requiring a teaching certificate. This, school board officials said, means that the SCEA can no longer engage in collective bargaining for teachers. The school board has used this opportunity to immediately begin rewriting the relationship between teachers and schools. Naturally, the union is running straight to what is usually the last bastion of mindless obeisance to union obstructionism, the courts, and is suing to force the...

Yank the Dipstick... Sheriff Dupnik Recall Effort Begins in Pima County
2011-01-21 23:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston I was wondering how long this would take, but apparently my wait is over. A recall petition to oust Clarence Dupnik, the partisan, leaky-mouthed Sherif of Pima County, Arizona, is finally underway. Dipstick... er, I mean Dupnik, is now infamous for instantly blaming Fox News, Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and all conservatives for the actions of deranged killer Jared Loughner in Tucson. Even before the first facts were known, Dipstick was speculating along his hateful, partisan line that it was the right that was responsible for the crime. Now his big fat mouth has finally gotten him in trouble. The Pima County Tea Party is planning a Dump Dupnik rally for Jan. 28th....
An 'Open Letter to the DuPage County GOP' Protesting Sen. Scott B
2011-01-21 17:13:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Here is an interesting note from Frank Napolitano of the DuPage Conservatives. Apparently, the DuPage Conservatives are none too happy that a mushy-middleman like Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown is coming to speak to the conservative heart of collar counties. I'd certainly agree with Mr. Napolitano that Scott Brown is in no way a conservative. I can't imagine anyone mistaking him as one, either. He's no more conservative than, say, oh, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney happens to be. I guess the main difference between Brown and Romney is that Brown admits to being a mushy-middleman whereas Romney is one, but won't admit it. But... well... back to the subject... Mr. Napolitano is wondering why Brown is...
Crook County Illinois: Fake State Rep Casts Deciding Vote to Raise Our Taxe
2011-01-14 19:28:00
-By Warner Todd Huston She didn't know anything about the bill. She never read it. She hadn't been given any cheat sheets, facts sheets, talking points, or mass emails on the bill. But in true, corrupt Chicago fashion, she voted "yes" on it just as she was told to do by her corrupt party bosses. Even worse, she was only a "state rep" because someone told her to drive to the state capitol for a week to "be" one. As Andy Shaw joked, Williams became the "somebody that somebody sent."* It is business as usual for Illinois, the most corrupt state in the Union....

Indiana County Throwing Man off His Own Property For Living in Camper
2010-12-23 19:05:00
-By Warner Todd Huston A county government in Indiana has decided that a man that is bothering no one, a man living a very simple lifestyle, a man living on his own property must be evicted from it. Why have these jackbooted government thugs decided that this must be done? Because the man has the gall to live so simply that he has no plumbing or electricity in the camper he is living in. WISH TV news in Indiana told the tale of Dick Thompson, a 72-year-old man living on his own 38-acre property in Madison County. Thompson lives on the property with several horses, a dog, and a bird. He resides in an old camper that has no sewer...
