Time's Cover Story: China's Times, Are They A Changing?
2008-05-28 09:24:00 Heart of Beijing has a good post up, discussing the changes the Sichuan earthquake has brought to China and, in particular, to how China views itself and how China views how outsiders view China. The post is entitled "Time's Cover Story," and it uses Time Magazine's article, entitled, "Helping Hands," as its springboard. Both the post and the article itself are well worth a read.

Going right back to where we started - BusinessWeek / Yahoo cover story on
2008-02-02 00:39:00 How could people read things like this on mainstream sites like BusinessWeek and Yahoo and then go out looking to buy a home, unless they're doing serious 2000-price-level low-ball offers? Actually, it'd be a good thing to copy this article and submit it with every bid.Along with the math of course. Something about price to rent or price to income perhaps? It's the P/E stupid. It'll always be about the P/E.Brace yourself: Home prices could sink an additional 25% over the next two or three years, returning values to their 2000 levels in inflation-adjusted terms. That's even with the Federal Reserve's half-percentage-point rate cut on Jan. 30.While a 25% decline is unprecedented in modern times, some economists are beginning to talk about it. "We now see potential for another 25% to 30% downside over the next two years," says David A. Rosenberg, North American economist for Merrill Lynch (MER), who until recently had expected a much smaller slide.Shocking though it might seem,...

A Cover Story
2007-11-05 08:11:00 When I first set brush to canvas, it was a late autumn evening, barely warm enough to leave one window slightly ajar and let the far off strains of the high school’s marching band waft in on the cool night breeze. Under the warmth of the desk lamp, two half-empty tubes of black and white acrylic paint lay next to the splattered palette Ms. Marks had issued the first day of school. A few weeks later, while shirking my art history studies, paintbrush shamelessly in hand, I finished it.On a late October afternoon, not but two years latter, I found myself flitting down the steps of Dodd Hall, thankfully liberated from the philosophy professor’s drone, and skittishly headed toward the bottom floor of the administrative building. Several corridors and stair flights latter I reached the tiny office where they sat in stacks.Waiting, featured on the cover of the 2007 volume of the UCLA Literary Journal, Westwind.Ever so excitedly, I picked up a copy. There they were, the brushstrokes of ...

Star Magazine Alters Photograph of Jennifer Aniston for Cover Story
2007-06-01 18:49:00 Star Magazine recently published this cover of Jennifer Aniston. The cover story is about Jen possibly having a $5M deal on a tell-all about her years with Brad Pitt. Jennifer's publicist has denied the story, saying the allegations are just not true.Which is probably the case being as the photo Star used for their cover was altered to suggest she was carrying a manuscript. And you know, it's Star Magazine. Now Radar Online has uncovered the photos of Jennifer Aniston before they were doctored. Read for yourself.."Seeing is believing, as Star magazine knows. That's why it illustrated its cover story about "Jen's $5 Million Tell-All!" with a shot of Jennifer Aniston carrying what is plainly the manuscript she's allegedly shopping around to publishers about her days with Brad Pitt. But hang on—maybe Jen's not really writing a book? In which case, maybe Star's cover actually shows something else—say, Aniston attending an auction, holding an art catalog from Los Angeles Moder...

The American Conservative - Cover Story
2007-04-17 16:47:00 The cover story at The American Conservative this issue is "Hagel's Dilemma." The full piece is excellent and I highly recommend it. Here are some excerpts:"[H]ere at ground zero of the conservative movement were innumerable depictions of the late President Ronald Reagan, tons of literature and rhetoric about the sanctity of life, traditional values, constitutional correctness, limited government, states? rights, and self-determination. In his 11 years as a U.S. senator, Hagel has in some way defended them all, yet he is a pariah in what should be his political comfort zone."..."Simply put, it is the 800-pound gorilla that no one at CPAC wanted to talk about this year?the war in Iraq?that has come between Hagel and the conservative grassroots. It is why they are willing to overlook Republican Rudy Giuliani?s anti-gun and pro-gay positions or Mitt Romney?s mid-career conversion against abortion."..." ?Talk about no good deed going unpunished. If you use voting record as the center...

Hip-hop Planet / National Geographic Cover Story
2007-04-01 16:19:00 If these words intrigue you, do not miss James McBride's cover story for National Geographic: Biggie, Senegal, TuPac, China, Grafitti, Harlem, Herc, Basement, Slapped, Jobless, Culture, Rap. To explain the phenomenon of hip-hop in his "Hip-hop Planet" piece, McBride writes this illustrative graph:Burning ManImagine a burning man. He is on fire. He runs into the room. You put out the flames. Then another burning man arrives. You put him out and go about your business. Then two, three, four, five, ten appear. You extinguish them all, send them to the hospital. Then imagine no one bothers to examine why the men caught fire in the first place. That is the story of hip-hop. Excellent article, particularly for those interested in hip-hop history and how the music and dynamic lifestyle is now purposefully embraced worldwide. BTW, you can watch video of author James McBride trumpeting hip-hop's global migration at ABC News.Links: hip-hop music harlem rap grafittinew york

Wall Street Journal Cover Story: One Year Later
2007-03-03 05:45:01 Many of you may recall that I was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal last year for a story discussing the investment merits of Internet search giant Google (GOOG). In fact, some of you may have even discovered this blog directly as a result of that article. At the time I was writing a lot about the company and fortunately some Wall Street reporters took notice.Whenever the article gets brought up to me, the most common question I get, perhaps quite predictably, is "Well, who was right?" Here we are one year since that article ran, so let's reflect on how things have taken shape for the stock since then and see exactly who was right. To summarize, the article was called "As Google Matures, Investors Take Closer Look at Its Risks." In addition to myself, the other investor interviewed for the story was David Gordon, who also happens to be an avid stock market blogger (The Deipnosophist). Both of us were early investors in Google, but I decided to...
Cleavage cover-up cancels cover story
2007-03-02 13:43:03 A feature that was to be in Jane's Magazine titled 'Jane's Guide to Boobs' has been canceled to the chagrin of preemptive erections everywhere. The feature was to showcase 53 firm femmes topless, but Jane isn't running some kind of flash-it-all whorehouse, they keep their identities covered and it's an extra fee to get a 'private dance lesson', alright? Or at least that was the idea. But as with any strip club, you begin having sheer cover-ups, and then smaller ones, and before you know it, you're showing the man in the boat for $5 a pop. Okay, perhaps Jane didn't go that far, but the list of 53 women who were paid a whopping $50 each to take it off was leaked and Jane soon after pulled the plug. Women may just have stay with the traditional route of using grope guides to find our way around boobs.tags technorati : boobage boobs cleavage jane |
