Did McCain Wow ?Em At CPAC?
2008-02-08 22:43:00 Once John McCain?s inevitability became manifest, there was no shortage of advice from pundits, wise men and assorted kibitzers about what he needs to say to conservatives at the 35th annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to earn their trust and their votes. Perhaps he needed the coaching, considering that the other Republican presidential hopefuls ...

John McCain at CPAC- The Un-Obama
2008-02-08 19:24:00 McCain doesn't have the magnetism of Obama, or does he? I prefer a slow, well-articulated (Bush sometimes struggles with this although his major speeches are fine.) speech than a pyrotechnic show-stopper just like I prefer a strait rendition of the Star Spangled Banner than a Whitney Houston melismafest. McCain seems sincere which counts for a lot. And substance? Whew! Obama is Wonderbread to McCain's whole wheat. The danger for McCain is focusing too much on securing the support of the tantrum right and thereby losing the support of less strident Americans. As for a strategy against Obama: Republicans need to get it into people's head that Obama is all flash and no substance. If people begin to believe that, Obama's exciting speeches will be a liability not a strength. Don't people assume that a beautiful blond achieves success because of her looks? Do people trust male models with their taxes? "Barack Obama is charming, but..." If charisma were all it took, Tony Robbi...

Romney at CPAC: Dissection of a Lie
2008-02-08 15:16:00 Yesterday at CPAC Mitt Romney gave one of the most disingenuous and hateful speeches I have ever heard. I will dissect the the entire text of that speech, found at KETV, and point out the many lies contained. The speech is in black. My comments are in blue. I want to begin by saying thank you. It’s great to be with you again. And I look forward to joining with you many more times in the

Mitt Romney: This Nation's Conservative's Conservative, Addresses CPAC
2008-02-08 15:15:00 Today, addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Governor Romney announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign for the sake of Republican unity and the future of our country. In 2008, Republicans must stand united if we are to prevent Senators Clinton and Obama from taking the White House. As a nation at war and facing uncertain economic times, the American people cannot afford the Democrats and their agenda for retreat and economic slowdown. With today's speech, Governor Romney outlined the significance of this election and the need for the Republican Party to remain strong. Ron Paul Doesn't Give Up Hope, Speaks at CPAC
2008-02-08 14:56:00 If Ron Paul's fellow Republican candidates - or Democrat presidential contenders, for that matter - thought that Congressman Paul was going to give up a fight, they thought wrong. At the same Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) yesterday in which Mitt Romney announced his own withdrawal from the presidential race, Ron Paul not only didn't give any indication of resigning, but also sang the same battle hymn he's been humming all along. Though this time, it was bravely just hours after Vice President Dick Cheney gave his own address to the CPAC.

McCain booed at CPAC
2008-02-08 02:26:00 John McCain is desperately trying to stem the attacks from conservatives. McCain, who was the only major Republican presidential hopeful who failed to speak to last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, will address this year’s gathering today in Washington with a clear agenda: Mending fences with his increasingly vituperative conservative critics. The hatred of John McCain ...
CPAC and McCain Part II
2008-02-08 01:08:00 Yesterday I had some advice for John McCain: The fact that he almost has the nomination in hand would seem to indicate that the CPAC crowd is not only irrelevant in the nation as a whole but even within the Republican Party. If McCain panders too much it will damage his chances in November. You can bet that anything he says at CPAC will be part of a Democratic commercial in the general election. So what should McCain say? My recommendation would be: "What you see it what you get and if you would rather have a Democrat in the White House then continue to attack me."Well he didn't listen - text at RedState. The CPAC wingnuts have been ranting about how John McCain is just not crazy enough to be a real conservative. Well Sir John not only pandered to the crazies at CPAC he did everything he could to convince them he was just as bat shit crazy as they are. All this after Romney quit the race. Here are some snips that will come back to haunt him in the general election: They will offer ...

Nightly Ramble: What now, WP update in early, McCain’s CPAC speech
2008-02-07 23:24:00 You can call it what you want to, David, and I suppose Romney and his comments this afternoon there were worth some consideration, with regards to the questions I was asking this morning. That said, I am immediately suspicious whenever somebody turns around 180° and supports the person that they were running against. Frankly, I can’t help but wonder if there wasn’t some back room deal going on, with regards Romney and a vice president slot. I say that, because I concur with your estimation that Huckabee will end up under the straight talk express very shortly. I decided to get Wordpress updated this afternoon, when I caught word that the reason for the hurry up update. Was that there was a security issue with 2.3.2. Update went smoothly, no problems expected, all’s well, all flags are flying, and all that. If you’re running Wordpress, you may want to look at the automatic update plug-in. I’ve used that for a couple of updates now, and it’s a ...

Mitt Romney to Withdraw at CPAC
2008-02-07 18:27:00 Rumors swirl around The Corner. It would not be surprising given how hard it would be for him to even force a brokered convention. Plus a powerful exit speech could lay the ground for a future run where he would start with conservatives in his corner and work to branch out from there, instead of spending ...

All you need to know about McCain?s visit to CPAC today
2008-02-07 10:18:00 McCain will pretend to agree with conservatives on a lot more than he does. Conservatives at the conference will pretend that he’s not the last line of defense against a parade of Ginsburg clones on the Court. It’s a marriage that is perfect for America - 4 years long, and that’s if everything goes right.

CPAC and McCain
2008-02-07 00:31:00 Over at the WSJ June Kronholz talks about McCain and CPAC.Will McCain Make Nice to the Right? The next big hurdle for John McCain isn't the Feb. 12 primaries. It's his appearance tomorrow before the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, whose verdict on the Arizona senator could make or break his presidential aspirations. The 6,000 Republican Party members expected to attend "are the ground troops that make up the conservative base," says David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union, which sponsors the yearly meeting. "And he's pretty much blown his credibility with these people."CPAC has been an important stop on conservatives' calendars since Ronald Reagan showed up in 1973 for the first of 17 appearances. The three-day conference in Washington now draws thousands of people, more than half of them under age 26, who come to listen to the movement's stars and assess its presidential candidates.Last year, Sen. McCain was the only declared candidate to tu...

CPAC, a royal waste of money
2007-08-21 22:12:00 Is there any more boring station on TV than CPAC? Well, not including the History channel. Is Canada so uninteresting that the best we can do is show committee hearing meetings that no one could possible care to watch? CPAC should be an opportunity to reflect Canadiana, instead it is dead air. Even the History channel, a rival for dead air, where the film the Dirty Dozen passes as WW II history, offers more, marginally more. We don't do these specialty channels at all well. Perhaps it's a lack of money due to a relatively small population. But I doubt it. We don't do these channels well because there is no incentive to do so. But it reflects poorly on us. Better they weren't there at all than to make us aware, as we graze on by, that we don't know how to interpret our past or envision our future, we invest only in keeping an eye on our present. That's too bad. Here's what CPAC claims to be doing: CPAC, the Cable Public Affairs Channel, is Canada?s only privately...

GayPatriot Joins Open Letter to CPAC
2007-03-06 14:19:02 Dan and I wholeheartedly endorse the following letter: ************ An Open Letter to CPAC Sponsors and Organizers Regarding Ann CoulterConservatism treats humans as they are, as moral creatures possessing rational minds and capable of discerning right from wrong. There comes a time when we must speak out in the defense of the conservative movement, and make a stand for political civility. This is one of those times. Ann Coulter used to serve the movement well. She was telegenic, intelligent, and witty. She was also fearless: saying provocative things to inspire deeper thought and cutting through the haze of competing information has its uses. But Coulter’s fearlessness has become an addiction to shock value. She draws attention to herself, rather than placing the spotlight on conservative ideas. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2006, Coulter referred to Iranians as “ragheads.” She is one of the most prominent women in the conservative movement; for her to employ s...

Coulter Quip Calls John Edwards "Faggot" at CPAC
2007-03-05 06:59:00 Wow! I guess it will take take a lot of work to top conservative-loudmouth Ann Coulter's comments at this year's Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) conference, after refering to John Edwards as a "faggot."But, it was a joke. Aren't you laughing? Me neither. The New York Times quoted Coulter, making a reference to Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington. She's just so witty that Coulter. ?I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ?faggot,? so I ? so kind of an impasse, can?t really talk about Edwards," she said, speaking to an overflow room of activists.Of course, as expected, several campaigns for Republican and Democratic candidates immediately frowned upon her stupid and inapppropriate joke. But that should be expected. I take it a step farther and have to ask why does a woman like Coulter, who makes an art out of pers...
