Kid Crafts: A Magnetic Turtle Toy
2010-09-30 10:00:00
Have you ever looked at those pretty little wooden boxes that cheese comes in and wondered what to do with them? Not that I'm confessing anything here, that would be kind of an odd thing to think about. But regardless, here's what we did with one of the little boxes. If you can't see it, it's lined with felt and that's a piece of a toilet paper tube as the little turtle's house.  We glued flowers for his garden and put a few tiny sea shells just because. The turtle is made from Sculpey clay and he's glued to a string and a magnet that is threaded through a little hole in the back of his house. On the other end of the string underneath the box is another magnet and when you put the two magnets together through the wood they make him toodle around his garden magically. I suppose he doesn't need a string to do his walking but it kind of keeps it all attached so he doesn't get lost.© 2005-2010 Scribbit, LLC all rights reserved

Kid Crafts: A Church Doll
2010-09-22 10:00:00
I think this variety of doll is called a "church" doll because it was designed for church and quiet play. With a soft, rather abstract "body" which is only stuffed head in a square of cloth (in this case satin backed with flannel--best of both worlds) it is nearly half blanket/half doll and can fit nicely into a pocket or pouch to be pulled out during the sermon. While I edged this one with lace scraps and used an extra piece to form a little bonnet you could make it from a handkerchief or any piece of fabric--I imagine a little girl would have fun stuffing the head with batting and decorating her own doll.I embroidered eyes on the face and used a bit of blush for the cheeks but you could use fabric markers or puffy paint and let her design her own friend. The head is stuffed with batting and then tied around the neck with quilting thread (as it's a bit stronger than all-purpose thread) and the hands are knotted off. That's all there is to it--a head and two hands and maybe a bonne...

Crafts for Better Reading
2010-09-15 10:00:00
For some reason when I was a child I had no interest in the Little House series. My sister read it and loved it but me? No thanks. I stuck with my beloved Nancy Drew, thank you very much. However, I ended up with the first book in my hand at the used book store while the kids were looking for something to read and decided I'd read it to Lillian. She was game and soon we were eating up a chapter before bedtime each night.I found myself completely drawn into the story and loving it as much as Lily--probably because life back in the 1870s was so darn interesting! They made cheese, they built log cabins, they even butchered pigs (every gory detail) and it's all hugely entertaining and enriching (if that doesn't sound too weird). So I came up with a fun idea for a bit of a Little House obsession. . . .I dug out felt and wooden pieces and glue from my craft closet and we made our own Little House dolls (the idea came from our Quiet Family craft a year or two ago). We made Ma and Pa, Ma...

Crafts are in Fashion at Milan Furniture Fair 2009
2009-04-26 15:42:00
I have posted several examples already about the crafts trend at this year's Milan Design Week, but this one seems to be my favourite:GAN, Gandia Blasco?s carpet and textile brand, presents at the Salone in Milan the second collection designed by Patricia Urquiola - MANGAS. MANGAS (engl. SLEEVES) is based on a patchwork of different wool knits, to create a collection of various typologies with different shapes, going from Manga corta (short sleeve) to Manga de campana (bell-shaped sleeve). The result is a series of eight very special carpets, full of nuances, due to their variety of textures and colours .adHeadline {font: bold 10pt Arial; text-decoration: underline; color: #66B5FF;} .adText {font: normal 10pt Arial; text-decoration: none; color: #800040;}Another one: KAIRO, a chair in solid fragrant cedar-wood.Reflecting on the experience of designing KAIRO, Karim Rashid says: ?When I designed the KAIRO chair for RIVA 1920 I was guided by the woodworking process itself used to p...

Halloween Cupcakes That Are Tricky and Treaty
2008-10-22 10:00:00
I was feeling tricky this week so we made cupcakes. Actually it was an extremely strategic move on my part because I really love my chocolate cupcake recipe--I could eat two or three before I realized the horror of what I'd done but I'm not that big on candy. So . . . the obvious solution is to make cupcakes for the kids but to let them decorate them up with candy so that they get a treat but I am so far removed from temptation that I could sit in a room with these guys alone and never ever take a lick. Our monster bugs have coconut mixed into the green icing to give them that rough, alien look. The mouths are orange slices sliced in half, the eyes are Lifesavers with M&Ms glued in the sockets. Antennae are licorice strings.Enjoy!***Here are some other great seasonal treat links:* My Many Colored Days has cute little felt clips--in autumn colors they'd be so cute!* Finding La Dolce Vita has Bones of the Dead cookies you'll have to see.* The McIllece Spot has Pumpkin Fudge t...

Ghostly Halloween T-Shirts
2008-10-15 10:00:00
Saturday was a day of painting at our place. I finished the final coats of paint on the kids? new rooms and of course as soon as I brought out the rollers Lillian and Spencer wanted in on the action. They did fine for a while the only problem was that with all that white I had a hard time seeing what had been painted and what hadn?t?we went round and round painting the same places over and over until I realized the system wasn?t working. Eventually after lunch I came across another painting idea that was a bit more productive?Halloween t-shirts.I put Spencer in charge and left him to supervise David and Lillian?s creative efforts and he thought they were having so much fun when they were done he decided to make his own.Supplies:One dark colored t-shirtFreezer paper or wax paperContact paperA permanent markerScissorsWhite fabric paintA Sponge1. Using a dark colored t-shirt place a large piece of freezer paper or wax paper inside the shirt as a protective layer to keep the paint from...

Mad River Valley Crafts Fair
2008-08-29 05:06:00
One of the exhibitors at the Craft Fair will be Baby's Breath Quilts, a Barre VT quilt maker. The Mad River Craft Fair is being held this weekend at Kenyon's Field in Waitsfield VT. I've been to the fair several times and always enjoyed seeing the wide variety of great crafts and artwork on display. We've bought a few items over the years, most notably some great Alpaca sweaters for the grand kids. It's a fun event to attend with very good food, a wide variety of crafts and excellent live music (a swing band on Sunday!). I recommend it highly and can almost guarantee you will find something you just have to buy. It's that good. If you have children in tow, don't hesitate to go. They have plenty of activities geared toward the younger set to keep them entertained. In the meantime, you can stroll and browse pottery, wood crafts, paintings, jewelery (lots of jewelery), unique clothing, baskets, toys, furniture, and much more produced by area artisans. This show has be...
Making Music with a Homemade Chime
2008-08-27 10:01:00
Years ago I used to do a bit of music instruction. Not so much anymore--I've turned my kids over to the professionals--but when the children were small we enjoyed playing musical games.Making a set of musical chimes is easy enough, the biggest obstacle is having access to a saw that can cut the pipe into the right lengths. Luckily I have a wonderful grandfather who has a shop full of equipment and he helped me to cut my pipe then drill little holes in the tops so I could string them up.Here's what to do:1. Buy a 12-foot piece of 9/16 inch diameter pipe (that's the measurement of the opening, the diameter of the pipe itself is 11/16 inch) and cut it into the following lengths:for E - 7 5/8 inchesfor D - 8 1/8 inchesfor C - 8 3/4 inchesfor B - 9 inchesfor B flat - 9 5/16 inchesfor A - 9 9/16 inchesfor G - 10 1/16 inchesfor F sharp - 10 5/16 inchesfor F - 10 5/8 inchesfor E - 11 inchesfor D - 11 3/4 inchesfor C - 12 5/16 inchesfor B - 12 7/8 inches2. A Six-Sided Wooden Block Puzzle
2008-06-04 10:01:00
Continuing with summer activities and crafts for kids, today's idea is strictly a cut-and-paste project but the results are so fun. Lillian and I did this this week and even Spencer thought it turned out rather cool.First, you'll need a set of square wooden blocks such as you'd find in a craft store for a dollar or two. I used a dozen of 1-inch square blocks.Next, choose six pictures either from magazines, coloring books, hand-colored pictures or photographs. Grouping the blocks tightly together trace the outline of the set onto each picture then cut out the outline like you see in the picture to the left.Use a cotton swab to rub some Elmer's glue on one face of each block then group them back together and lay the whole picture onto the tops of the blocks, pressing firmly to adhere the picture.Once the glue is set (it doesn't have to be completely dry but it shouldn't slip around or allow the picture to rip) run a razor blade down along the edges where the blocks meet to sepa...

Simple Magic Tricks
2008-05-28 10:01:00
We had a family activity a few weeks ago and Spencer and I treated everyone to some magic tricks. I don?t exactly have a repertoire of them or anything, it was kind of a whim on our part but the tricks were good and we had everyone stumped. So you want to see them? Here?s a video clip of Spencer?s card trick. Can you spot how he does it?Then, Lillian decided that if Spencer could do it, so could she (she's nothing if not confident). Here's her version:My own trick was a little different and I don?t have a video but here?s how it works:I, Michelle the Amazing, have a hat and a piece of paper and pencil for everyone in the room. I ask each person to write a simple sentence on their piece of paper, something along the lines of, ?I drink orange juice? or another easy one.Everyone writes their sentences on their slips of paper and they fold them up. I collect all the folded slips of paper in my hat and say that I will now magically read each person?s question before seeing the pie...

I Knit Therefore I Am
2008-05-28 10:00:00
Voila! Here is what I did while we drove around Florida back in March. Both of those front panels represent the time spent on the roads between Miami, Orlando, Titusville and Ft. Myers though I didn't get the sleeves and back done until later--that pattern took me forever to get into my head. She's getting too big for me to knit for now, a size 8 sweater takes a lot more time than those 12 month-sizes she used to wear. I may have to hang up the knitting needles until I have grandkids. Or start knitting doggie sweaters for the neighborhood strays . . .Technorati tags: Wordless Wednesday, knitting, crafts

Make Your Own Bracelets of Power
2008-05-21 10:01:00
You want an activity for boys and girls that will thrill your five year-old as easily as your preteen? Oh I've got the answer for you! Behold, the mighty Bracelets of Power.March yourself down to your local hardware store (Home Depot or Lowes for example) and buy several feet of 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch plastic tubing. It's probably over in the same aisle as the PVC pipe--it's not hard to find neither is it expensive. I bought two large coils of tubing for about $5.Cut a nine-inch length of small tubing. Cut a one-inch segment of big tubing to use as a coupling (be careful not to get the tubing oily or greasy then it won't fit as tightly). Stick the large tube segment on the end of the longer, small tube segment then drop tiny beads or a little bit of glitter inside the bracelet through that larger opening.Once you've got as many beads or as much glitter as you'd like use an eyedropper to fill the tube with water then stick the other small end into the coupler to make a circ...

A Personalized Family Calendar
2008-05-14 10:00:00
This project is a good thing for children that are a little older to tackle. If you're going to hand this off to your kids then they'll need to at least be able to write legibly though you could make it up yourself and have small children illustrate it for you.So . . . I give you the "On This Date" family calendar. You've seen the items in the newspaper where they will list significant events that happened on whatever day it is? "On this date in 1789 the first Constitutional Convention was held, in 1949 the invasion of Normandy began and in 2002 Sponge Bob Squarepants was born." Or something equally significant.Well make up your own important events calendar for your family, go through your immediate and extended family and collect birthdays, anniversaries, death dates, anything of importance to your family history. Then add to that significant events that may not be listed in your vital records: the first day you met your husband, the first tooth, the first step, when you fo...

Rosie O'Donnell Crafts, Jokes About 'Rage Issues' On Today Show
2008-05-07 19:51:00
Rosie O'Donnell was on the Today Show yesterday. Though it was a day before Barbara Walters appearance on Oprah aired - in which, among other topics, Barbara discussed what she felt to be Rosie's emotional and rage issues - Rosie apparently had already gotten wind of what was said of her in Walter's memoir Audition, and joked that she would fly out of control and start breaking things. Ro did, actually, later on, throw a few things at the cameras in jest. Rosie also said she agrees with Reverend Wright and understands where he's coming from?
Do It Yourself Flannel Board Stories
2008-05-07 10:00:00
Jumping right into my summer crafts series, today I'm giving you an activity that has provided hours of quiet entertainment around here: Flannel board stories. Now you can of course buy cute little pre-made sets of flannel figures or spend hours cutting out pieces of felt to save some money but I've got a cheap way to quickly make your own. You can have a set made in no time--or you can put your children to work making their own.Look around for coloring books or activity books on a subject your child likes. I think I used Winnie the Pooh at one time though you could use anything from Disney princesses to Spiderman to a generic coloring book about ponies. If the pictures are too large you can always make them smaller by shrinking the images on a copier or scanner. But whatever size, color the pictures using colored pencils (not markers or crayons that might bleed over time) then cut them out, laminate them in contact paper and stick either a magnetic strip on the back (for use on ...
