Houston Astros retire Craig Biggio?s No. 7 (AP)
2008-08-18 01:36:00
For the first time in a while, Craig Biggio felt butterflies. The Houston Astros retired Biggio’s No. 7 before Sunday’s game against Arizona, and the seven-time All-Star waved to fans and touched his heart during a lively ceremony. Biggio retired in 2007 after becoming the 27th player to reach 3,000 hits. Read the full story.

Gotta Get Me Some of That Veteran Leadership
2007-07-03 21:21:00
Isn't it touching when baseball veterans feel the need to impose their knowledge on talented young players who may not need it? Especially when one of them has never, ever been good at baseball? When Hunter Pence went 0-for-4 the other night, Craig Biggio pulled him aside and offered some advice. "Look, go back to the cage right now," he said. "Don't wait until tomorrow. You'll go back there mad and hit until you're exhausted. By the time you leave, it'll feel right again."Hunter Pence is batting .342, in his first season, at the age of 24. He's OPS-ing .948. Does he really need Mr. 3000 to send him back to the cage because he went 0-4 in one game? Obviously, whatever he's doing is working very well. Craig Biggio, on the other hand, is OPS-ing .701. Hey Craig, I know you're 41 and all, but get your ass back in that cage until you're OPS-ing .916 like you did in 1997 (which was a career high, and still worse than Pence is hitting in his rookie year). By the time you leave, it...
Craig Biggio...Hall of Famer?
2007-06-29 17:49:00
As a result of Biggio collecting his 3,000 hit last night, it has sparked debates of whether or not he is Hall of Fame worthy.  When you look over his career and his overall body of work, it's collectively good...but not great.  That being said, I beli...
Craig Biggio: You've Come a Long Way, Baby
2007-06-29 17:05:00
As Astros veteran Craig Biggio, 41, continues on his Hall of Fame trajectory -- now having crossed the 3,000-hit plataeu -- it seems hard to believe that it was 19 years ago when he arrived in Houston as a rookie catcher -- with his top priority to have his picture taken in uniform with staff ace Nolan Ryan.Biggio, then 21, wanted irrefutable photographic evidence to prove to everyone he had actually been a major leaguer once he was sent back to Tucson -- in all probability never to return. That said, it's no secret now that Biggio -- whose late season meltdown last year saw his season batting average fall to a near career low of .246 -- will morph more and more into a part-time reserve and pinch hitter. Chris Burke, 26, stands to pick up a lot of the slack if only he can get on base.Meanwhile, Biggio is playing cagey as to when he will retire. The sooner he does, the more likely he will go to Cooperstown at the same time as career-long teammate Jeff Bagwell, 39.
Craig Biggio Gets Hit Number 3,000 [David Stefanini]
2007-06-29 15:56:00
To me this is more impressive than Frank Thomas' 500th career home run. But first, let me tell you this is the first time in MLB history that two players have reached these two monumental milestones on the same day. Craig Biggio and Frank Thomas have just re-written the record books.Biggio became the 27th player in MLB history to get to the 3,000 hit mark. He is only the 9th player to do it for the same team. That is why it is more impressive than the Thomas homer. In an era where big home runs are hit here is a small guy who came to the ballpark everyday for the same team and just played. If he doesn't get a hit, he usually gets hit. When he is on base he can steal. He is in a very elite group of people with 250 career home runs and 400 stolen bases. Something that is over looked is he has hit more doubles in his career than Hank Aaron. And by the way he is the only player to play a full season at 2B, C, and OF. Think about that; 3 complete seasons he has spent at different positi...
Congrats to Craig Biggio and Frank Thomas

What a night!!! Two future Hall-of-Famers entered the record books last night.  One, a feisty, grind it out player, while the other, a monster masher with his bat.  Each has taken a different road, but eventually their roads will cross when they enter the Hall-of-Fame when their historic careers are finally over. Last night in dramatic ...
Craig Biggio (2B-HOU)
2007-04-05 22:08:00
The ageless one Biggio continues to provide solid production for a middle infielder with 4 hits in the Astro's opening series against the Pirates, including 3 hits and a homer in the finale.
Craig Biggio Chases a Milestone
2007-02-24 12:31:04
Craig Biggio has been one of my favorites players for a long time. He gives you 110% every time he steps on the field and he always plays the game the “right way.” At age 41, Biggio sits 70 hits short of 3000 for his career and as we all know, that elusive number almost guarantees a player a spot in baseball’s Hall of Fame. If Biggio does get his 3,000th hit this year, he’ll be the 27th player to do so in Major League history. While that is pretty exclusive company and a major career milestone, I believe he has his sights set on a different target. If Biggio gets hit by six pitches this year, he’ll have been hit more than any other player in baseball history. It’s almost a given that he will set the record this year. The last time Biggio was hit by less than six pitches in a season was 1991 when he only took three for the team. Last year he was hit nine times and that was his lowest single season total since 1994. Surely he can manage six mo...
