Cranberries are not Street Food
2009-02-09 05:58:00
Can I just say how glad I am to be back in the swing of things where posting is concerned? Life has settled into something resembling a routine which allows me to realistically integrate my posts into my daily life. As many of my longtime readers know however for much of last year this wasn’t the case, and this blog gathered more than its share of dust for weeks at a time. Although it may have appeared as though nothing was going on, I was still cooking and taking ... A Perfectly Delicious Start for a New Daring Baker
2008-03-30 05:53:00
Hello Everyone,I am delighted to announce that I have successfully completed my very first Daring Bakers Challenge. I have been a silent admirer of this great blogging community since I began my blog in December 2007. Baking and I have a long and happy history. I began baking fairly regularly when I was in high school - cakes, biscuits, pastry, bread! My love affair with baking continued well into my University years, when the demands of career and travel left me with little time to boil an egg, let alone bake. Slowly, yet steadily now and with much encouragement from my husband :) I am returning to this great passion - and so I welcome Daring Bakers into my life!!Here's my experience with the very first challenge. A couple of weeks before the challenge was posted, I ran across Dorie Greenspan's book Baking: From My Home to Yours at my local library. Browsing through, I found several recipes I was keen on trying. However, as we were expecting visitors from out of town in March, I ...

Lucky Comestible II: Quinoa Salad with Buckwheat and Cranberries
2008-03-25 21:20:00
[I thought it would be fun to run a little series over here at DDD: I’ll profile one one of my favorite foods, or a food that I’ve recently discovered and enjoyed, over several days.  For this second entry, I’m focusing on Quinoa. The series is presented on an occasional (and entirely arbitrary) basis, before I move on to the next lucky comestible. ]   I remember very clearly the first time I tasted quinoa (pronounced keen-wah):  there was I, barely having reached the other side of twenty, at an English Department party at the University of Windsor.  As a Teaching Assistant studying toward my MA degree, I had leaped at the chance to attend, not only because this was my very first chance to enter the Inner Sanctum of the faculty club, but also because I’d been harboring a raging crush on my Modern American Drama professor and I knew he’d be there. As it turns out, no, my sophomoric infatuation never made it beyond the fantasy stage;...
Colorful Spring Salad with Cranberries and Home-Made Bleu Cheese Dressing
2008-02-22 01:31:00
Remember those evenings when you have had a rough day at work, end up coming late at home, and have nothing to cook except some cheese and a bag of salad greens gawking at you from your fridge!! believe it or not, I have had more than my share of such evenings, especially when it gets really late and I am determined to go to gym that day at any cost. For days like these, salads can act as a welcome retreat. And yet, using the same store-bought salad dressing every time can get kind of boring.... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

Number 525 - Cranberries
2007-12-24 23:34:00
Number 525Cranberries"Salvation"(1996)-..Genre:Alt Rockart by missy-gAs John Lennon once said.......... So this is Christmas. So this would be a great introduction for some Salvation then huh? Nah, your right, no-one believes in God anymore .... generally speaking on behalf of the masses. Even John Lennon quipped "No Jesus is going to come from the sky". (see number 639) The world has become more of a faithless bunch and a lot more of a self centered society. God bless freedom & choice eh? (cynically speaking). Christmas has now the following meanings, a break from work, a get together with a family you usually cant stand all year, a great excuse for excessive eating & drinking, but most of all ..... not having to work, again. If there is/was/ever a God, he must be so proud of his creations, especially the ones in his own image. Merry Christmas Earth. (apologies to the people who still have to work and the people who still believe in God)To be sureCombining the melodic jangle...

Cranberries is the Fruit of the Month
2007-12-11 03:58:00
Cranberries is a ‘festive’ fruit that you will get to savor in luscious dishes throughout the winter, specially as that pleasantly tart sauce for the Christmas turkey or that sweet Cranberry Chutney.. *yum Most cranberries are processed into products such as juice, sauce, and sweetened dried cranberries. Cranberry is regarded an indispensable part of traditional American and Canadian Thanksgiving and Christmas menus and European winter festivals - cranberries are simmered in sauces, mixed into bread- or meat-based stuffings for turkey, added to muffins and baked in fruit tarts and pies. Cranberries work well in many other types of recipes as well. For example, once cooked and puréed, they can be transformed into wonderful sorbets, soufflés, and mousses. Besides its symbolism in this festive month, the cranberries is actually a healthy fruit. Cranberries is a type of acidic berries that are rich in Vitamin C and powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals (known as tannins) ...

Native Americans and Pilgrims used cranberries as a red dye. Wild cranberries were probably part of the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Cranberries Fight Ovarian Cancer
2007-11-04 16:27:00
Compounds in cranberries may help improve the effectiveness of platinum drugs that are used in chemotherapy to fight ovarian cancer, researchers have found in a laboratory study. The scientists demonstrated in cell culture studies that human ovarian cancer cells resistant to platinum drugs became up to 6 times more sensitized to the drugs after exposure to the cranberry compounds in comparison to cells that were not exposed to the compounds, which were obtained from juice extracts.Although preliminary, the findings have the potential to save lives and reduce the harmful side effects associated with using high doses of platinum drugs for the treatment of ovarian cancer, the researchers say, adding that human studies are still needed. The new study adds to a growing number of potential health benefits linked to cranberries."For the first time, we have shown in our in vitro studies that cranberry extracts can sensitize resistant human ovarian cancer cell lines," say study co-presenters ...

THANKSGIVING TIPS - Cranberries
2007-10-29 20:04:00
Countdown To ThanksgivingThe Short (dis)Order Cook, blogging on The Essential Rhubarb Pie, got me to thinking. She's all worried because she's hosting Thanksgiving for the first time. She'll be fine, I know it, but, aaahhh, the sweet apprehension of youth! I remember when I, too, was new at this... Now TWENTY!!! years later, I feel as if I could cook Thanksgiving dinner with one hand tied behind my back. I'm not bragging (well, I guess I am), but my ease comes, not from being the greatest cook on earth, but from doing it for all these years. I've had my disasters. And, no, I'm going to list them now...I'm not crazy...but the thing about Thanksgiving is that there is SO MUCH food that one imperfect dish or another isn't going to be noticed in the onslaught of food to come. I'm going to post some of my favorite Thanksgiving tips or recipes in the days leading up to Thanksgiving (in addition to regular posts). It won't be an exhaustive list, but I guarantee that taken togethe...

Cranberries Can Save Lives
2007-07-06 22:37:00
Many of today’s health foods loose their benefits while being processed and mutated for production. Many of today’s common health foods are genetically altered so they will ripen earlier, are disease resistant, and can survive transport to market without spoiling. This processing and genetic manipulation dilutes the original benefits. Not so with cranberries. Cranberries naturally grow in swamps making them naturally hardy and resistant to disease. They are a tart berry, so they do not spoil when packed into crates and shipped to the processing plant.Cranberries contain both vitamin C and cancer preventing antioxidants, in fact, cranberries one of the top ten antioxidant-dense foods available to Americans. Antioxidants work by stabilizing free radicals that cause cell damage, leading to heart disease and cancer. Most people do not realize that the body can make its own antioxidants. Food plays a big part in our holiday celebrations, especially the dinner meal. What are your favorites? Turkey? Stuffing? Pumpkin pie? Don't forget the cranberries! Yes, that's right. Those teeny red berries are chock-full of nutrients, an indulgence that's really good for you! Dr. Joe Vinson, a research chemist at the University of Scranton in Pennsylania, reported that "cranberries contained the most antioxidant phenols compared to 19 commonly eaten fruits. Cranberries are loaded with antioxidants and should be eaten more often." Looking for a new way to include cranberries in your holiday meal?
