2008-04-03 00:15:00 Back in 2000, Neil Young and Crazy Horse spent months in an old San Francisco studio experimenting and recording a new album of material. The songs were different, sharing a "bluesy, jazz-tinged vibe as a common thread."When they finally gave up on the experiment, the majority of the group declared the tracks as un-salvagable and the tapes were put on the shelf. Only one track, Goin' Home, was finished and a few of the other songs showed up on the album Are You Passionate with Booker T. & the MG's.Now, Young and original co-producer John Hanlon have gone back to those tapes and are planning on releasing them later this year as part of the Neil Young Archives series. The frontman for an Ohio band called the Ebb Tides (as Benny Van), he re-formed the group under his most famous name around 1969 and recorded a single for Mercury called "Who's Nuts Alfred." An album, The Ultimate Prophecy, followed soon after and found the group dabbling in acid rock and folk/country-rock. The Complex Sessions captured Neil and the band just after the Sleeps With Angels recording sessions, as Young was still obsessing over the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Although the two never met, you might remember their chilling connection... Cobain quoted Young's lyric, "it's better to burn out than to fade away," in his suicide note. What you have here is the audio version of those filmed sessions. Four songs, clocking in at over 25 minutes. No audience, no clutter, no bullshit. Whether Young specifically sang any of these songs with Cobain in mind is hard to say. In fact, he had performed some of them in concert well before this recording date.
