HAPPINESS, CREATIVITY AND EQUALITY
2011-11-25 05:40:00 American urban studies theorist, Richard Florida, explores the correlation between happiness, creativity, and equality in his latest piece for The Atlantic. According to his findings, a creative nation makes for happier people and less social inequality. Of course, this is the condensed version. You can read the entire article here.

Tom Hess: How To Develop Creativity In Your Guitar Playing - Part 1
2011-02-08 21:06:00 How To Develop Creativity In Your Guitar Playing - Part 1 by Tom Hess Do you struggle with becoming a more creative and self expressive musician? Many guitarists run into this problem as they begin to feel more comfortable with the physical aspects of their guitar playing. A lot of musicians can't seem to write songs or create their own guitar solos at the same level as they can "play" their guitar. Their music sounds stiff, uninspired or not very creative and expressive. If this describes you, then this article will help you to identify the causes of why this problem exists in your guitar playing and will show you the steps you need to take to overcome it. That question of how one can become a more creative guitar player is a very typical one that I (and probably most guitar teachers) am very often asked. Before I go into detail to answer it I need to say that in order to completely overcome such a problem will require one to work at it for a long time. And I strongly suggest w...

Improv Theatre Methods Assist Creativity
2010-11-03 18:41:00 I often use improv theatre techniques in my workshops on creativity and innovation. They are little plays in which people have to spontaneously handle unexpected situations in front of an audience. Usually delegates approach these challenges with some caution but after a little training and practice they find them entertaining and liberating. The methods can ...

The Myth Of Creativity | Robin Hanson [del.icio.us]
2010-06-30 15:52:00 Critics complain that schools squelch creativity, but most people are inclined to be more creative on the job than would be truly productive. So schooling is mostly about selecting the smarter and more diligent, and learning to show up day after day to somewhat boring jobs with ambiguous instructions.

Turning a warehouse into a hockey rink: Creativity is the key in today&apos
2010-06-15 01:25:00 For my day job as editor of Midwest Real Estate News I recently wrote a story about a construction company in St. Louis turning an office/warehouse building into an ice hockey rink. The company, ARCO Construction, rented out about 30,000 square feet of their facility to a youth hockey team. Of course, this being a terrible commercial real estate market, the company still has about 18,000 square feet to lease.Still, having 30,000 square feet off the books is a nice feeling.John Komlos, who is a vice president with ARCO, told me that his company never would have considered the hockey rink idea if the economy and the commercial real estate market were better. That's because transforming the space into a...
Creativity & Innovation In Banner Advertising Is Still Alive – Re
2010-04-13 06:48:00 Just when I think that something is dead it surprises me with a new way which is creative and comes back to life. Offlate Ive felt that banner advertising is dead. But I guess after today I would say creative banner advertising is rare and not dead. Today I came across a banner ad that I not only interacted with but I am also writing this blog post about it. I went to Youtube today morning and came across this banner ad (Check screenshot below) If you click on the above you will know that it asks you to click on the banner. Once you click the attributes given to the girl start changing after she starts having sprite. Check each time you click the banner changes on attribute. At the end she gets her match. Check how banner looks at the end of 4 clicks: The above banner was placed at the Mast head position on Youtube. The reason I mention this is because youtube is a liesure viewing platform and not only the banner is creative but the placement on youtube is apt as most users expect...

5 Tips For Workplace Creativity
2009-12-07 13:58:00 Pressures of most jobs often prevent creative thinking that can lead to new and better ideas. During my career, I've enjoyed working with many individuals who inspire creativity. One of the breakthrough creative thinkers in the country today is Bob Thacker, senior vice president of advertising and marketing at Naperville, IL-based OfficeMax. Here are Bob's five secrets to demonstrating creativity in the workplace: 1.  -; Interact with people you don't always see. Look for people who are enthusiastic and positive. Share a cup of coffee or lunch and ask for their perspectives. Creative people are often the most connected people. 2.  -; People like to play. Invite others to help you brainstorm. Even informally. It's a compliment to them and a...
Truths about Creativity
2009-09-16 17:00:00 Image by: Dalydose I have been thinking about the relationship between creativity vs. design vs. where does it comes from. I have also wondered why some people, not just designers, are more creative than others? Here are some of my thoughts on creativity that may help you understand what it is and how to get it going for you.

Is there a Divide in Design?
2009-09-02 18:32:00 A couple of weeks ago I posted a link on my Twitter account that lead to a write up by Bruce Nussbaum on The Latest Trends in Design and Innovation--And Why The Debate Over Design Thinking is Moot. I did think this was one of his better posts, though his so called "trends" are not entirely new. However before we go deeper into this discussion, let us briefly recap these trends:

Creative thinking and living
2009-08-08 12:45:00 It is held by some that a persons’ minds and attitudes reflect the environment in which they are brought up and live. That is no doubt true of many who have not yet developed due to lack of education (or mal-education) and the means to enlighten themselves through travel or experience, and of those who ...
Creativity vs. Consistency - right marketing habits
2009-07-23 04:08:00 It happened today again. A managing partner of a boutique law firm had never “attempted marketing” because he felt he wasn’t creative enough. In fact, most of his clients already come from [what I dub, passive] referrals. I’m guessing you’re a bit more creative (or at least you have your moments)… You’re at least pro-active ...

Redesigning The Rock-Paper-Scissors Game
2009-05-25 17:37:00 I really enjoy reading blogs where the author shares his or her musings and anecdotal thoughts. I find that this gives a good insight into how that author thinks. Even better if these thoughts come from a designer. Check out Smart Design's co-founder Tom Dair share his thoughts about redesigning the Rock-Paper-Scissors game. Tom argues that it does not seem logical that Paper trumps Rock, and sets out looking for a new Tri-factor that makes sense. As I was growing up, my mom had a lot of advice, especially when it came to safety. I used to hear "it's better to be a live chicken than a dead duck" a lot. Here's another one: "if there is ever an electrical storm, whatever you do, don't stand under a tree. The safest place during an electrical storm is in a car. The rubber tires protect it from the lightning". One day some teenagers in a fast moving Camaro hit a tree down the street from my house. The car was totaled; fortunately the teenagers survived. Mom, as usual, had a r...

The Art of Selling
2008-07-13 21:44:00 One of my first bosses taught me an important lesson. Good designers are a dime a dozen, he said. Coming up with a great design solution is the easy part. The hard part, he said, is getting the client to accept the solution. "But if the work is good, don't the clients know it when they see it?" I asked. My boss just looked at me silently for a long time. And then, with gentleness and no small amount of pity, he reached out and patted me on the head: Poor kid. He was right, of course. In any creative activity where clients are involved, you have to make the sale twice. Before you get to the customer, you have to sell the client. I love this little snippet by Michael Bierut that highlights why some great designers don't really go anywhere. The ability to sell a design is one of those skills I would rank very closely to creativity in terms of important ones a designer should have. Via: Design Observer
