Like.com?s Creepy, But Effective, Facebook Ads
2008-06-01 16:10:00 Is a picture worth a thousand clicks? You've heard of contextual ads triggered by keywords on a Web page. Now, get ready for contextual ads triggered by images on the page. Visual-shopping search engine Like.com is running ads on Facebook that appear to match objects in profile photos. Notice the ad by Like.com in the lower left for aviator sunglasses in the screen shot shown here, sent to us by TechCrunch reader Luke Bearden? Yup, those look eerily similar to the aviator sunglasses Bearden is wearing in his Facebook photo. Well, at least we know that Like.com's technology works. But is it effective targeting? Bearden thought the ad was "creepy." And, um, he obviously already owns a pair of aviator sunglasses. He also obviously likes them enough to feature himself wearing a pair on his Facebook page. And maybe he lost those beloved glasses or they broke since the photo was taken. So I'd say the ad is both effective and creepy. Would you click on it? Source: TechCrunch

2008-05-09 06:08:00 It’s that time of year! Hello, bugs! All it takes is one drop of Koolaid in the floor and every ant and his brother comes to partake. The pond is full of mosquito larvae, and will be until I get a batch of goldfish that don’t immediately die on me. Yard work means turning over rocks and picking up branches that expose a variety of creepy-crawlies. But what you really notice is the caterpillars. A cherry tree next to the pond produces millions of them, and they are everywhere! My porch broom has dozens spinning cocoons. They are stuck between my tomato seedlings. I have to skim them off the surface of the pond. I occasionally see one on the floor. And I found one in my hair one night! I don’t scare easily, but cleaning up squished tent caterpillars is not my idea of fun. That’s the reason you can’t adopt them as pets, kids. Nevertheless, it got me thinking: We have MakeHuman plus Blender on the Linux desktop, and we have a way to make Flash. So, could we do this demo using only FOSS tools? I think it may be possible with pre-rendered frames. You could have separate layers for eyes and face movement, and the rest is just head tilts. However, I think they have something more sophisticated going on, like something built into the ActionScript. Now, as if that weren't enough, here's a four-legged walking thing that will haunt your nightmares. All it needs is a head... 2008-03-25 12:28:00 oracle of data Over at Matrix, Jonathan Miller links to a chart he did for Crain's New York Business showing that the number of coops and condos available for sale in Manhattan has gone up 15% from the end of December to the end of February, though still at relative historically low levels. As you can see from this chart he did for Curbed, which I hit in seasonality of Manhattan inventory, not so much, the rise since December 2007 brings inventory back to the level it of January 2007. impossible to know but fun to speculate?Of course the question for these days of General Economic Anxiety is whether the 2 month rise in inventory to start 2008 will continue an upward trajectory and take more starch out of the real estate market, or whether the monthly inventory will repeat that lovely color (teal?) for 2007 in the Curbed chart by dropping in late Spring.
