Jesus? Radical View of Divorce
2009-07-17 19:10:00 Next to homosexuality the issue that seems to be most contentious for the Christian church is that of divorce. I?ve heard people say, when arguing for Christian tolerance of gays, that in the Bible Jesus never spoke out against homosexuality but he did specifically condemn divorce, a practice widely accepted within (if not a prime ...

Does the Doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement Promote Torture?
2009-05-26 18:33:00 Not for the first time have I been perplexed by the Church’s long affair with torture. Is this just a case in which flawed and sinful men, having taken control of the Church, used brutal and violent means to achieve their own ends? Or is there some warped thread woven into the very fabric of ...

Crime-weary Mexico barely focuses on US execution
2008-08-06 22:16:00 MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexicans struggling with increasingly gruesome crimes at home devoted the least attention in recent memory to the execution of one of their citizens in Texas. Crime And Punishment In The Bahamian Society
2008-04-24 05:39:00 OPINION-Crime and punishment - The Nassau, Guardian: There are around one thousand people in prison in The Bahamas. Is that a lot or little? How can we tell? Compared to the 2.2 million people languishing in U.S. jails it does not sound all that many, but the population of The Bahamas barely exceeds 300,000, compared to the United States population in 2005 of 298.2 million. Prison, what a strange thing it is. We can remember our shock as a child being told that some adults had done things so bad, that they had to be locked away for years until they knew better. We could hardly imagine anything worse. Prisons seem to belong to the age of the horse-drawn cart and the workhouse, not to satellites and the Internet. If anything, we should be phasing them out - converting the prison into luxury accommodations. Speaking as a social observer rather than a criminologist, we find just about everything to do with the criminal justice system an enigma. But the central question it seems...

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
2007-11-17 11:49:00 Crime and Punishment by Fyodor DostoevskyBantam Classics (October 15, 1996) | 576 pages | ISBN: 9780553211757 | PDF | 2.14 mbCrime and Punishment is quite possibly the most widely read 19th century Russian novel in the English-speaking world, and while I might say it's a tad overrated (for reasons discussed below), there are many good reasons for its exalted status. In case you're not familiar with the story, it begins with the decision of an impoverished student, Raskolnikov, to rob and kill a pawnbroker, having justified his decision with the argument that her death will do the world more good than harm, both because she cheats her clients and because the money from the robbery will give him the start he needs to become a great man and ultimately benefit humanity. The action of the novel is confined to the day of the murder and a few days following it, during which time, in addition to dealing with a murder investigation led by a clever and intriguing detective who suspects him,...

Crime and Punishment
2006-12-24 18:01:00 I've been thinking, dangerous I know. I was at work last night when a public information advertisement came on the TV warning about the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. These adverts are aimed at teenagers, but I feel what they fail to show are the consequences of catching these diseases. There is no mention of the medical effects being infected may cause. This in a way brings me to my point, kids are told what to avoid, but they are not taught what the consequences will be if they fail to.I feel the same could be said about crime, kids understand what is illegal, but fail to understand the consequences that must be faced if the law is broken. What I would like to suggest is an addition to the School curriculum to include lessons in Crime and Punishment. The lessons could possibly be given twice a year for the final three years of School. The kids could be taught the process of being arrested, all the way to being sat behind bars in prison. The lessons could be given by mem...
