Is technology producing a decline in critical thinking and analysis?
2009-02-09 03:14:00
Patricia GreenfieldStudies shed light on multi-tasking, video games and learningAs technology has played a bigger role in our lives, our skills in critical thinking and analysis have declined, while our visual skills have improved, according to research by Patricia Greenfield, UCLA distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Children's Digital Media Center, Los Angeles.Learners have changed as a result of their exposure to technology, says Greenfield, who analyzed more than 50 studies on learning and technology, including research on multi-tasking and the use of computers, the Internet and video games. Her research was published this month in the journal Science.Reading for pleasure, which has declined among young people in recent decades, enhances thinking and engages the imagination in a way that visual media such as video games and television do not, Greenfield said. How much should schools use new media, versus older techniques such as reading and classroom discuss...
Critical Thinking ? ?Knowin? things that ain?t so?
2009-01-15 13:19:00
I just finished reading Physics for Future Presidents: The Science Behind the Headlines by Richard A. Muller a professor of physics. He brings up a very good point: Equally important to understanding the physics of modern life is unlearning the things that you may think are true but aren?t. Mark Twain is often quoted as ...

*Appears out of no where* I’ve never actually got the chance to use this, and probably never will. I should teach the younger generation. How Not To Be Wrong About The Economy
2008-04-26 15:51:00
Being a media pundit is a job that involves an odd relationship with data, the truth and, of course, most experts' stock in trade: the future. In this world, it seems to me, being right is one thing and not being wrong is another.

Three Little Truth Value Paradoxes
2008-03-02 16:40:00
The “truth value” of a proposition is just whether it’s true or not. The truth value of “2+2 is 4″ is true, and the truth value of “2+3 is 6″ is false. The truth value of “Hilary Clinton will be the 44th president of the United States” is currently unknown;

Critical Thinking, Part 2
2008-02-14 00:00:00

Variants on the Wason Selection Task
2008-02-08 08:07:00
The Wason Selection Task is a fairly well-known puzzle that tests whether or not you have an intuitive grasp of the thing logicians call the material conditional. It turns out that most people who aren’t logicians don’t. Here it is, along with some (so far as I know) original variants.

When One Thing Is Less Identical Than The Rest

How Much Do You Love Me?
2007-12-29 12:24:00
There are some questions that ask for a quantitative answer — an amount — even though no precise answer is possible even in principle. The question of the title invites responses such as “a lot”, “somewhat”, “hardly at all” and even “twice as much as my husband” (ahem).

Critical thinking community inquiry

Learning the Art of Critical Thinking
2007-11-29 04:52:00
There is nothing more practical than sound thinking. No matter what your circumstance or goals, no matter where you are, or what problems you face, you are better off if your thinking is skilled. As a manager, leader, employee, citizen, lover, friend, parent — in every realm and situation of your life — good thinking pays off. Poor thinking, in turn, inevitably causes problems, wastes time and energy, engenders frustration and pain. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to “figure out the lay of the land” in any situation we are in. We all have multiple choices to make. We need the best information to make the best choices. What is really going on in this or that situation? Are they trying to take advantage of me? Does so-and-so really care about me? Am I deceiving myself when I believe that . . .? What are the likely consequ...
Googlediving, hybrid vehicles, and energy consumption
2007-11-28 03:56:00
A recent thread of discussion (namely, some comments on the hybrid cars podcast episode) brings me to remind you of the wisdom of cross-checking ostensibly "scientific" things you hear in conversation, or see mentioned in print or online somewhere. Fortunately, it's pretty easy these days to check things using the internet. When I run across something that seems to be questionable, I've gotten into the habit of doing a quick bit of checking things out with Google. I call this "googlediving" -- it's essentially the information equivalent of dumpster diving but doesn't leave you all smelly when you're done. Best of all, it usually takes just a few minutes to run a quick check. Let's look at the recent discussion as a good example....

Critical Thinking
2007-09-13 05:00:00
If an idea or establishment is fundamentally flawed, then it is dangerous to ask too many unfriendly questions. Tautological dogma can be discussed endlessly but broken by a certain path of questioning.Sometimes we get stuck in circles because we are unable to come up with the right questions.
