A certain liberal aversion to discourse/criticism
2012-01-20 22:18:00 Ever since college, I have blessed with friends and teachers holding political views opposed to my own. My favorite political science professor in college was — and remains — a Marxist. One of my favorite professors in law school has since become one of the leading liberal jurist in the country. These professors, like many ...

Sai Baba ? ?The Hindu? allows criticism
2011-05-16 12:04:00 After many years of virtual subservience to Sathya Sai Baba and his doctrines, combined with refusal to entertain the views of critics – not even answering our letters – and nothing but virtual promotional articles of Sathya Sai Baba as endorsers of his sainthood, ‘The Hindu’ has at last relented somewhat. It has allowed a ...

Critical Fragments: Criticism
2011-02-05 17:15:00 The following quote from jazz great, Wynton Marsalis, about music critics strikes me as having the potential to inform us about art criticism as well. If you substitute "artist" for "musician," "art" for "music," and so forth, his comment resonates across media to reveal the challenges inherent in all criticism. I have made the substitutions of the analogous terms for you below; the links go to his original quote: "A lot of times, reviewers don't really know enough about what you're doing to have an intelligent comment on it. It's hard to walk in and see something one time. An artist has worked on something, it has a lot of references, and it's full of things the reviewer doesn't know. A person doing an art review -- how much art do they know? How much art theory do they actually know? I understand the practical aspect of it. Yours is a piece they reviewed on Tuesday. They have a piece to review on Wednesday. I'm not mad at them. I'm just lucky to have the type of friends ...

More Avvo Criticism & Possibly a Way to Game Avvo?s Defective Rating System
2010-12-04 22:01:00 Because of my public criticism of Avvo, and their defective rating system, I get a lot of comments about them. A brief summary of my crticism is that it’s biased against small and solo firms because larger firms have greater wherewithal to manage the extremely cumbersome Avvo profile process, and because Avvo won’t let an ...

Unions Retreat on Criticism of Dems That Didn't Support Obamacare
2010-09-22 16:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Earlier in this election cycle unions were pumped up with an assumed sense of supreme power, they had spent millions to elect their guy to the White House and they were ready to flex their muscles. Unions began to direct that assumed power against Democrats that were reticent to support Obama's takeover of our healthcare system. In some early primaries unions spoke out against these so-called Blue-dog Democrats and said they would not support them but at the other end of this primary season unions are singing a different tune. With the obvious downturn in support that Democrats have seen in these primaries and in the polls of American voters unions have gotten the hint (like...
Kanye West blogs about recent fashion criticism
2010-01-30 02:45:00 Kanye West took to his blog to lash out at recent criticism (IN ALL CAPS OF COURSE) from PETA who recently included the star on their 'Worst-Dressed' Celebrity list. This blog from the PETA Files probably added fuel to the fire. 'Ye has some strong points about the hypocrisy he sees in the fashion world as his response then transitions into a more general mindset on life. This part I really appreciate as his post can be interpreted as an inspiration for creative people to think outside the box (the 'color by numbers approach to life'). He even ends the post with a rhyme that I hope he somehow integrates into song. Also noteworthy: "Let the ball players dance after...
Tallon deserves credit, not criticism
2009-07-06 05:25:00 Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon has kept his team in the headlines this past week. Some good, some bad. Whether it be "big name" free agent signings or NHL investigations. The importance is that the Blackhawks have regained enough relevance to cover the entire front page of the Chicago Tribune sports section on Sunday, July 5th. While the 4th of July in Chicago may have felt a little like autumn, the Blackhawks are still a couple months from lacing up the skates. Yet, every move the Hawks organization makes is being watched very closely. Well, more like every licked stamp and sealed envelope. It what may turn out to be much ado about nothing, the NHL has completed it's...
When Confronted With Criticism You Don?t Really Want To Hear, What Should Y
2009-06-15 16:46:00 It?s that time of the year where I need to carry out appraisals for my team members. This is by far one of the hardest parts of my job responsibilities! Do I hear you ask ?Why? ?Just like clay is molded in to pottery, we are all shaped by the feedback we receive from those around us. The way a person perceives criticism, will have a powerful impact on their future reactions and how they feel about themselves. So, how you keep your pride and career intact, when you are getting a dose of criticism you?d rather not hear?1. Listen (Withhold Immediate Reaction!)If you?re like most people, you won?t like to be criticized! You might feel you are not being appreciated. You might feel that it?s a blow to the ego. Your natural reaction might be to defend yourself or lash back. This is exactly what I thought?.when I initially started my career. I suppose I was lucky I had good mentors, who persistently showered me with constructive feedback. As time went by, I began to realize what Randy Pausch...

Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism
2009-01-20 17:13:00 "Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism, is a two-day forum on the state of contemporary art criticism co-organized by Artspeak and Fillip. Through a keynote address by Tirdad Zolghadr and two panels made up of international critics Diedrich Diederichsen, Jeff Derksen, Sylvie Fortin, Maria Fusco, Tom Morton and William Wood, the forum seeks to address what is at stake in the shifting value of judgment within contemporary art writing. A renewed interest in the efficacy and function of art criticism has arisen in the last decade, embedded in art market speculation, global conflict and recent economic crises. This forum will engage with the key issues produced from these conversations, specifically returning to the role of valuation in contemporary art writing."ARTSPEAK: Events - Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism: Forum

Criticism of Modern Fansubbing
2008-06-08 18:07:00 I just watched this documentory titled THE RISE AND FALL OF ANIME FANSUBS. Here go you: PART 1 More parts and my opinions after the cut. PART 2 PART 3 PART 4 PART 5 The narrator makes some very good points; I especially agree with the points about keeping honorifics, not translating words, and putting excessive liner notes on screen. I less agree about translating signs, but I do think putting the translation seamlessly into the animation is over-doing it. I do agree with the over-use of colors, karaoke, and other special effects, especially for opening and ending pieces. Well, at least the fansubbers are doing this for free and I do get to see alot of anime that I'd normally wouldn't get to see otherwise, but I do prefer buying R1 DVDs for the reason that I think the translations for the subtitles tend to be much better.

2008-05-07 20:58:00 The Brazilian president has rejected criticism that his country's production of biofuels has forced a surge in global food prices and harms the environment. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused critics of being driven by economic and political interests, and failing to highlight soaring oil prices and increased demand as a factor in pushing up food production costs."Don't tell me, for the love of God, that food is expensive because of biodiesel," he told reporters."Food is expensive because the world wasn't prepared to see millions of Chinese, Indians, Africans, Brazilians and Latin Americans eat. 2008-04-20 18:38:00 This week was suppose to be all rest and no work (....not exactly) for us design students here at Limkokwing but it turned out to be the busiest for me.
