Can Genetically Modified Crops Feed the World?
2009-04-17 16:01:00
From Scientific American: Humans have been genetically modifying crops for millenia the old-fashioned way--selective breeding. But new techniques that insert foreign genetic material, say bacterial genes to produce insecticide in a corn plant, have raised health and environmental c

Climate change will affect crops...
2008-06-21 21:38:00
As per a climate change expert Mr. R.K. Pachauri, rising temperatures will take it's toll on the yield of crops. As per him, wheat yields would fall by 5-10% with every increase of 1 degree celsius. This especially would be in the case of the Indian subcontinent, particularly India.(source:- The Times of India) Various sources have claimed India would be amongst the worst sufferers of the effect of Global warming and this latest bit of news only justifies that.

Some biofuel crops could become invasive species: experts
2008-05-21 02:56:00
Biologists have warned that countries thinking of joining the rush for biofuels run the risk of planting invasive plant species that could wreak environmental and economic havoc. In a report issued on the sidelines of a major UN conference on biodiversity, an alliance of four expert groups urged governments to select low-risk species of crops for biofuels and impose new controls to manage invasive plants."The dangers that invasive species pose to the world couldn't be more serious," said Sarah Simons, executive director of the Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP)."They are one of the top causes of global species loss, they can threaten livelihoods and human health and they cost us billions in control and mitigation efforts. We simply cannot afford to stand by and do nothing."Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

News: The World According to Monsanto: The Horror of Commercial GM Crops.
2008-04-27 11:14:00
Reading through all the news about the global food crisis, I lacked one thing: the solution to this problem or even the slightest hint to one.In many discussion fora and through comments on social bookmarking sites, it was often suggested that genetically modified (GM) crops, said to yield a higher production, and to be more pest-resistant, could mean the solution to world hunger.I started to search around for more info on genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO), and came across several posts referring to a video called "The World According to Monsanto" by a French independent filmmaker, Marie-Monique Robin. The movie researches the credibility of (or rather lack thereof) US based Monsanto, one of the biggest chemical companies in the world and the provider of the seed technology for 90 percent of the world?s genetically engineered (GE) crops. Here is what Greenpeace has to say about the movie, and the company:The story starts in the White House, w...

Has Kenya joined list of countries contanminated with GM crops?
2008-04-16 10:32:00
A Genetically Modified contamination register report by both the Greenpeace International and Green-watch details 39 new cases of GM crop contamination in 23 countries over the past one year. Most of this contamination involved such stable crops as maize and rice, and included cotton, bananas and papaya.   According to the report, since 2005 the GM register has recorded 216 contaminated events in 57 countries since GE crops were first grown commercially in large scale in 1996.  This year's annual report on the register comes against the background of a controversy surround Genetically Engineered seed varieties.  Kenyan environmentalists and farmers in the country confronted the government and the seed giant Pioneer Company for importing and selling genetically modified maize seed variety from South Africa.   This followed revelation by the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition (KBioC) that maize seed variety imported and sold to Kenyan farmers by Far...
GM crops in Oceania
2008-04-15 07:16:00
From: GM crops on way to NZ, say experts Speakers at a biotechnology conference in Auckland last week said crop technology was developing fast and the public mood towards genetic modification had changed as the world's population grew and food prices rose. But GMFree New Zealand says the introduction of GM crops could put our international reputation at risk. Genetically modified pastures are not banned in New Zealand, but there has yet to be a crop approved for release here.   From: (Oz) Farmers may face legal action over GM crops MARK COLVIN: Farmers could soon be swapping writs over paddock fences as the battle over the introduction of genetically modified crops moves into the legal system. Anti-GM farmers are worried that their crops will become contaminated and export markets will dry up. The Network of Concerned Farmers, which opposed GM crops, is distributing letters to pro-GM farmers, warning them they'll face personal legal action to recover any losses ca...
New Soil Association report shows GM crops do not yield more - sometimes le
2008-04-15 07:08:00
Coinciding with a manifesto from Country Life launched today, which urges people to 'learn to love GM crops', the Soil Association has published a report on the latest available research on GM crop yields over the last ten years. The yields of all major GM crop varieties in cultivation are lower than, or at best, equivalent to, yields from non-GM varieties.Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, said:"GM chemical companies constantly claim they have the answer to world hunger while selling products which have never led to overall increases in production, and which have sometimes decreased yields or even led to crop failures. As oil becomes scarcer and more expensive, we need to move away from oil dependent GM crops to producing food sustainably, using renewable energy, as is the case with organic farming."Latest Research on GM Crop YieldsGM crops as a wholeFirst generation genetic modifications address production conditions (insect and weed control), and are...

Delivering slurry to arable crops

Putting slurry on to cereals or oilseed rape is a practice that attracts mixed reactions. Few people can fault the agronomic principles, but many object to the damage caused by the heavy machines needed to apply the material. There have also been concerns about whether slurry can be applied evenly enough to avoid over or under-dosing.

New study quantifies differences in biofuel crops, impact on environment
2008-04-01 23:12:00
There are plenty of flex-fuel capable cars on the roads, but there is not nearly enough ethanol available to power all of them on the gasoline alternative. It's no secret that corn-based ethanol is not the answer to our oil woes, but if that's the case, what alternatives should we be looking closest at? Regular readers are surely aware that cellulosic ethanol is the way to go when it comes to alcohol-based fuels, but even with that process, a crop of some sort is required. Additionally, biodiesel offers plenty of advantages over petroleum-based diesel fuel, but an oil-rich crop is required for its creation as well. A new study from the University of Washington was commissioned to find the most desirable crops for biofuels which suggests that algae and fast-growing trees be considered as the cream-of-the-crop, so to speak."While some biofuels may be an improvement over traditional fuels, we believe we should focus much more on the biofuels of the future that can be developed in sma...
