Lolla '09 review: Crystal Castles
2009-08-08 02:01:00
5 p.m. Vitamin Water stage"They're not underage; they showed me their cards!" yelled Crystal Castles' singer-screamer-patently spastic dancer Alice Glass after pouring a bottle of booze into the front row. It was nearing the end of the Toronto-based electronics duo's set, and Glass was slurring, no doubt thanks to between-song slurps from the same bottle she "gifted" to the crowd. But that didn't stop her from pushing forward an energized, if sometimes disjointed, set of charged songs led by Ethan Kath's stellar dance beats. No doubt this show was a party in the first row.Find more in our complete Lollapalooza guide...

NEW ARTIST: Crystal Castles - Crimewave + VanishedCrystal Castles are a band made up of 1 boy and 1 girl named after She-Ra's home and they play rough, lol. This is a Toronto based band I've been following for some time now. Even though you can't understand them more then half of the time I still find myself listening to them all the time. From their chatoic beat pumping tracks to the mellow electronic/synth pop ones these two will always keep you interested. They released their album back in March but you should deff check it out, Enjoy!!DL:Crystal Castles - VanishedDL Link 2:HEREDL:Crystal Castles - CrimewaveDL Link 2:HERE(WHAT DID YOU THINK?? Lo-Bat and the chiptunes community vs. Crystal Castles: Creative Commons Wo
2008-06-24 17:58:00
Last week on the program I mentioned the uproar that has been going on revolving around those indie-kid favorites Crystal Castles.Essentially, they are being accused of using samples from Lo-Bay and Covox without crediting the artists, violating the Creative Commons license that the music is licensed under. Here are some related stories:http://8bitpeoples.com/-http://colortronic.blogspot.com-/2008/05/crystal-castles-in-trb-l.html

Record Review - Crystal Castles - New Music
2008-03-18 00:28:00
Artist: Crystal CastlesAlbum: Crystal CastlesReleased: March 18, 2008Label: Last Gang RecordsI was already aware of how freaking good these guys were live. Now the ultimate test has arrived. The debut album. Again, they pass the test but I wasn't as impressed. That's not to say there's something wrong with the songs. There isn't. Crystal Castles are born for the dancefloor, this 8-bit infectious dance noise is as wonderous as it is odd, I just don't feel it runs well as an album. It feels like a ramshackle of singles stuffed together for release. I really like each and everyone of these songs, there's just something that keeps it coming together. For those of you who love the mp3 this is a dream come true however. There's plenty of new (and very excellent) songs to be had. Crystal Castles themselves built themselves upon remixes of their contemporaries (see klaxons, liars, goodbooks etc.) and I wouldn't be surprised if their own work is wonderfully remixed by a whole heap of...
Review: Crystal Castles- Self-Titled
2008-03-17 19:52:00
Who says disco is dead--fools, that's who.If anything, the infectious rhythms, sweet melodies, and dance structures have been smuggled across the decades, hiding in the music of artists following and living parallel to the movement: Talking Heads, Delta 5, Gang of Four, the Raincoats, Gary Numan, and more.Though the aesthetics of this era seem like an archaic joke now, the sonic spirit lives on in a new generation of musicians and producers influenced by the sounds of post-punk and 70s dance music.Enter Crystal Castles. Two years of suspense fueled by a leaked song, touring, and remixing the music of their contemporaries--Health, Klaxons, Liars, and the Whip to name a few--has finally lead up to the release of this self-titled full-length.The Canadian duo is made up of vocalist Alice Glass and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath, and their 8-bit approach to dance music production is attention-grabbing to say the least. The booming low end and lo-fi hiss of Glass' vocals on "Love and...

Crystal Castles - Live at Sin City, Swansea - St Andrew's Day, 2007
2007-12-01 16:22:00
I headed down into town late last night to catch the much hyped Crystal Castles play Sin City. 'Get Shakes' were the support band for the evening. I'd caught ear of them at the end of last year, so this was a very pleasant surprise! With their infectious noise and hard rhythms they really got the crowd in that party atmosphere. Think Justice, just with more attitude and the occasional cowbell. Awesome! Check out their myspace. Then it was time for the main show. I had really looking been forward to this for the last 2 weeks and I can't say I was disappointed. They played all of my favourites and their sound just totally exceeded my live expectations.Lead singer Alice Glass, did spend an awful lot of time rolling about on the floor but it was just that sort of evening. A really fun performance just bursting with energy. Highlight of the evening for me was the song 'Alice Practice'.In subsequent news, Crystal Castles have announced their debut l.p will be released February 19th....
