On Immigration
2008-06-14 05:19:00 Updated June 18:We have quite a few folks coming to this blog who are opposed to immigration. To be honest, almost everyone in the US who is opposed to immigration is White, and to some extent, it's associated with White nationalism. There are also anti-immigrant sites out there like Vdare, but they are almost always on the crazy end of the spectrum. Vdare is not White nationalist, but they do want to end all immigration altogether. On the far moderate end of White nationalism, we have American Renaissance. I do like to hang out there because it's nice to hear real, honest talk on race for once.In general, the White nationalists on Amren want to end non-White immigration altogether.I'd like to point out that this is a crazy and extremist point of view. Furthermore, Whites are only 65% of the US in 2006 according to this chart, and possibly less. 2% of the US is Muslim, and the overwhelming majority are not Europeans. Another .5% of the population are Indian-Americans. 1% of the po...

Cubans line up for PC's
2008-05-05 14:01:00 CNET is reporting that Cubans are lining up for the opportunity of purchasing their own PC's for the very first time.Late last month, President Raul Castro's government lifted the ban on ordinary citizens from owning a cell phone and getting cell service, a right previously limited to executives working for foreign companies or high communist party officials. DVD players, motorbikes, and plug-in pressure cookers also went on sale for the first time. Now, citizens of the communist-controlled country can for the first time be the proud legal owners of a desktop computer, according to an Associated Press report. More than a dozen prospective buyers were lined up Friday outside Havana's state-run Carlos III shopping center for a chance to buy the tower-style Qtech PC and CRT monitor for $780, according to the report. However, like the 50-year-old cars that roam Cuba's streets, the PCs are near relics of yesteryear, boasting Intel Celeron processors with a 80GB hard drive and 512MB ...

Cubans Rush To Buy Cell Phones After Ban Is Lifted
2008-04-16 14:25:00 Lines stretched for blocks outside phone centers Monday as the government allowed ordinary Cubans to sign up for cellular phone service for the first time. The contracts cost about $120 to activate — half a year’s wages on the average state salary. And that doesn’t include a phone or credit to make and receive calls. But most ...

2008-02-20 01:13:00 AP - Now that Fidel Castro has retired, many Cubans are looking to his brother to let more people open businesses, own homes and even travel abroad. But it will probably fall to a new generation of leaders to ultimately fulfill or frustrate their dreams of prosperity.

Gay Marriage? Unrestricted Travel? Cubans Speak Out!
2008-02-07 10:02:00 A Cuban minister who accepts gay marriages and traveling permits for Cubans wishing to leave or travel to the island may finally be eliminated, seem to be evidence of a new tolerant environment in the continent?s longest lasting dictatorship.Public statem-ents were made during a debate sponsored by interim president Raúl Castro, brother of ailing Fidel, to bring to light shortcomings and disappointments with the system and thus help to ?deepen communism?.Culture Minister Abel Prieto, a member of the party's powerful Politburo, said Tuesday night that he supports gay marriage, and Silvio Rodriguez, an ardent defender of Fidel Castro as well as a leading voice of the Cuban revolution, said he believes all Cubans should be free to travel abroad and stay in hotels currently reserved for foreign tourists. "I think that marriage between lesbians, between homosexuals can be perfectly approved and that in Cuba that wouldn't cause an earthquake or anything like that," Prieto...

Cubans to Vote for Tito Castro
2007-12-03 12:18:00 From The AustralianFidel Castro has been nominated as a National Assembly candidate, signalling that the ailing Cuban leader is not yet ready to give up politics and could even return to the presidency. The 81-year-old communist leader, not seen in public since he temporarily stepped down in July 2006 following surgery, was included on a list of candidates for national elections to be held on January 20 in Santiago de Cuba, where he has traditionally been nominated for office. To applause and cheers of ?Viva Fidel, viva the commander in chief?, municipal officials in Santiago de Cuba unanimously approved Mr Castro?s nomination on a list of 25 candidates for the National Assembly. They are going to have to tilt the bed quite a bit to get him to stand. Actually I am surprised that he has be elected. I thought that he was a dictator for life if we are to believe our American Friends.Perhaps he is emboldened by the Venezualan President Hugo Chavez's attempt to rule for ever. Seems the Ven...
Bush to Cubans: Viva Cuba libre!
2007-10-25 16:55:00 Bush did a good thing yesterday talking about the future of Cuba. No matter how much Cuban Communists control the media (see sitemeter below for the number of Cubans who visit Asymmetric), the message will get out to Cubans that help from los Yanquis will be forthcoming if, after thier fifty-year stagnation, oppression, and idiocy nightmare inflicted upon them by power-monger Fidel Castro, they choose to join the free world. This should encourage the truly brave Cuban souls who, under threat of imprisonment, are battling Fidel as you're reading this to continue resisting a continuation of totalitarian dictatorship under Raul Castro and the Cuban heels who support him. Such a promise may tip the more timid (or practical, if they think an American-backed government may win) towards fighting for a free future as well. The speech is very good. I love the repetition of the line, "Cuban rulers promised..." It's parallel structure and logical argument make it worth reading. => Read m...

11 Million Cubans still in limbo
2007-09-06 14:20:00 As long as Fidel Castro remains “officially” (if not clinically) alive: Cuba watchers and some dissidents question whether Raúl Castro will be able to implement his reforms as long as his older brother is alive. Fidel Castro’s presence would likely deter even modest economic reforms, they said. “In a sense, the Raulista project, if you can ...

Cayo Hueso
2007-08-20 16:17:00 Eviva Mexico? No, no... I'm not in Mexico ! I'm still here in Key West. I captured these wonderful cactus plants in a side street in Key West.By the way: "Cayo Hueso" is Spanish for "Island of Bones". The history tells, when Ponce de Leon first arrived at Key West, the island was littered with bones from the Indians who had lived here. The term "Key" is most likely an Anglicization of Cayo. It isn't clear if "West" is derived from Hueso (pronounced way-so) or if the term "West" has to do with the geographical location of Key West.
Trio la Rosa Amor en Guagua (autobus for non-Cubans)
2007-08-02 22:12:00 Just like the English call car hoods, "bonnets" and subways, "tubes," and people in Minnesota call soda, hilariously, "pop;" distinct countries and regions in Latin America have different names for the same thing. The one that causes the most chuckles amongst non-Cuban Latins is the the word "guagua," which Cubans use for "bus" (most Latins call a bus, "autobus"), so much so that I stopped using it in conversations with my Mexican friends just to avoid the inevitable distraction. One song that mentions guaguas is from my new favorite old group, Trio la Rosa. It's an exceptionally charming song, recounting the role the bus plays in one man's romantic history. IN Amor en Guagua, a man meets his wife and falls in love with her on the bus. The bus then takes them to their wedding and subsequent honeymoon. Nine months later, the bus brings his son back dressed as a bus driver. The song isn't clear if the birth took place on the bus or in a nearby hospital. Listen to Amor en Guagua...

Healthcare Update: Cubans Beg to Differ with Michael Moore
2007-08-01 00:00:00 Cubans are converting weed-whackers into propellers and risking death and capture to escape the land of equality and promise. So far this fiscal year, 2,819 Cubans have made it to Florida, compared with 3,076 in all of last year. In 1994, the year Castro relaxed the border, 34,000 people were intercepted by the Coast Guard in the waters between Florida and Cuba, who were, presumably, unable to resist the urge to start paying for healthcare.

What Cubans Think of Americans- Musical Evidence
2007-07-06 06:16:00 One can use a nation's artistic output to analyze its prevailing attitudes towards certain issues. An analysis of rap music, for example, may lead one to conclude that "urban youths" find: money and material possessions, whether gained through hard work or other means, to be of paramount importance; feminine modesty or restraint useless; relationships between men and women contentious; and the civil authorities a group to be resisted, mocked, or, at least distrusted. Country music, on the other hand, evokes patriotism, family, and an appreciation for those with a high degree of sun exposure, especially directly below their chin. So, I looked through my record collection to see what Cubans, from the pre-revolutionary era to its contemporary situation, thought or think about Americans. After all, Cuba, as one might expect from a small nation 90 miles away from the most powerful nation on Earth, has had its fortunes intertwined with the United States or its colonial forerunner for...

2007-06-25 18:22:00 And the Cane controversy beginsA few days ago I wrote my opinions on the new CBS series "Cane," which is sort of a new Sopranos-themed series with a powerful Cuban-American family running a sugar empire in Florida. I also told you that it appeared to me that the series was loosely based upon the powerful Fanjul Family billion dollar empire. The Palm Beach Post seems to think so as well, and the Fanjuls are pissed. 2007-05-25 18:55:00 CubansPhotographer Rachel Been has just completed a really good photo documentary addressing Miami's influential Cuban and Cuban-American population. See her photos here.Cultural bragging follows: I think that one of the reasons for the spectacular success of the Miami-based art fairs is the economic and cultural power of Miami's Cuban ancestry population, which as anyone who has been to Miami knows, is the dominant ethnic group in that city. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, we Cuban-Americans represent only about four percent of the 45 million or so Hispanics/Latinos that are living in the US, but unlike other Latinos, your average C-A is a Republican, disproportionally represented in Congress, and C-A average annual income is higher than that of Anglos and other non-Hispanic whites and Non-Hispanic blacks, and more than 50% of the top 100 wealthiest Hispanics in the US are Cubans as are more than 50% of the top Hispanic-owned businesses in the US.So why do Miamians wi...

Defective government hurts Cubans
2007-03-09 04:15:06 Interesting headline in the Miami Herald today: Defections might hurt Cuban team. It was for a story I posted on earlier this week, about three Cuban boxers who escaped Castro’s tyranny for freedom. The Herald’s take on this story? The final verdict is more than a year away, following the 2008 Olympics, but the defections of Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis and Yan Barthelemy could have a potentially damaging effect on the Cuban boxing program. Gamboa, Solis and Barthelemy, who plan to begin their professional careers soon, won three of Cuba’s five boxing gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympics and were strong favorites to win their respective weight classes in Beijing. ”This affects Cuban boxing, since we were three Olympic gold medalists, and I believe would have been double gold medalists had we stayed,” Gamboa said soon after arriving in Miami on Thursday night. Oh, boo-freaking-hoo. Poor Castro is going to miss out on a few Olympic medals. Meanw... |
