Cubs beat Pirates with 7-run 8th, 7 Soto RBIs (AP)

Geovany Soto drove in seven runs and the Chicago Cubs overcame Alfonso Soriano’s second dropped fly ball in Pittsburgh this season to rally for a 14-9 victory over the Pirates on Tuesday night. The Cubs won their fourth in a row to move 32 games above .500 for the first time since they were 90-58 ...

Aye matey, we be dealing with those untrustworthy boys from Pittsburgh tonight.  So best be preparing to take the ship by force, and use arrrrgh in unnecessary ways. With a little help from Pirate Jokes Q. What did the pirate get on the test? A. high sea! Q Where does the pirate put his cows? A In the BARNicle! Q What do you call a pirate with two eyes and two legs? A Rookie! Ok onto the game. Big Z is taking the mound for the Cubs.  Oddly all the talk on him is about his batting since he's hit in 7 consecutive starts.  I'm hoping for another good outing, maybe one that does not include spitting a tooth out in the middle of an inning. The Pirates are countering with Ian Snell.  He's you know, Ian Snell.  He has wtice as many losses as wins, doesn't have a great ERA, and 6 guys are batting .500 or better against him this season.   So that's it, check the side for links and such, lineups to come.

Why does Julie hate this man? And America? So tonight we head into PNC, a ballpark way better than its team deserves, to take on the lowly Pirates. What is there to say about this matchup that hasn't already been said this season? We're good, they're bad. Blah blah blah. But I want to talk about something else. Something that's probably not going to make many of you very happy. The problem of what to do with our 1st baseman. Outside of Z, he's probably the most popular Cub on the team. Everyone (hearts) him. He's intelligent, a quiet leader, seems like an all around great guy. Has a butt that's up there with Rich Harden's. But kids, we have a problem. "A problem?" You probably say. "The guys is hitting .290 with an .828 OPS! And you think there's a problem? Why, any team would be proud to have such a player on their team!" Well, that's probably true. But consider that this is the lowest OPS Lee has had since 2001. His OPS and his average has declined every season since 2...
Harden dominates as Cubs win; Hardy lifts Brewers (AP)

The Brewers’ hired hand kept Milwaukee in the game, and J.J. Hardy came through with a hit in extra innings for the win. The Cubs’ big acquisition? He made sure no extra innings were needed. Rich Harden gave up just two hits and matched a career high with 11 strikeouts, helping Chicago to a ...

For the Nats, it's Jason Bergman. I look like a shifty character. Let's hope this series doesn't end up like the one in Washington. Sorry for the quickie.  I promise it'll be longer next time....

Hey, 2008 Cubs. Wow, what a season, right? I mean, you guys are like a billion games over .500, leading the league in just about every offensive category, and doing a bang-up job of holding off the Brewers and the Cards. Good on ya, team. Couldn't be prouder! Except for one thing. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I can't help but notice that you guys lost to the Nats yesterday. I don't know if you've heard, what with your busy schedule of dominating the NL Central and all, but they're pretty bad this year. I mean like really bad. And, um, not to pile on, but this is AFTER you lost to the Reds, in game when you let Korey Patterson WALK, no less. So, while we're all so proud of you for what you done this season, if you could, you know, try to NOT lose to the Nats, that'd be great. Because while we should be secure in our awesomeness this year, frankly, we're not. I'm sure you understand. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and go Cubs! Love, The Gang At LOHO P.S...

The Chicago Cubs welcome the Washington Nationals to Chicago this afternoon, in what can only be described as the biggest mismatch since Grand Fenwick fought the United States. What happened in that one, anyway?  I turned it off because it wasn't the Pink Panther. I HATE playing the Nationals In somewhat relevant news, it is my birthday today.  This means it's also my brother millertime's birthday.  It's our sister's birthday, too.  We're going to be enjoying nature and each others' company in the backwoods of Minnesota, but we'll check in on the score, too. So imagine our consternation when it turns out that the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs on our birthday will be the one Cub actually capable of losing to the Washington Nationals: Jason Marquis has spoiled plenty of birthdays in his time You know what having Jason Marquis pitching on your birthday is like? It's like when you go to reach for a chocolate chip cookie, and take a bite, only to find out i...
Thursday 8/21 Game Recap; Cubs 3, Reds 2
2008-08-22 02:46:00
Sorry for you, Korey Today, your Chicago Cubs avoided looking like complete arses, defeating the Reds 3-2 and coming away with the 2-1 series win. I can only imagine the collective shudder after the first batter of the game, Chris Dickerson walked on 4 pitches. Chris Dickerson = Eric's son? You decide Apparently Big Z had a Big Z moment and got it together (from the AP, via Yahoo): Carlos Zambrano delivered a heated first-inning lecture to someone he knew would listen-himself. Upset after giving up a four-pitch walk to leadoff batter Chris Dickerson, Zambrano calmed down, regrouped and got out of the inning. The Cubs' ace also overcame a sore tooth, and homered on Thursday to finally get his 13th victory as Chicago beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. "I was talking to myself. I told myself, 'Is it that hard to throw strikes? Come on, let's go,"' Zambrano said. "I would rather have people go out there and hit home runs than walk somebody. I hate walks." So do we, Carlos, so do we. A...

You guys are facing Josh Fogg, for crying out loud. 7.71 ERA? I've been watching Little Leaguers this week that could do better than that in the majors. Game is on Comcast, and for us down-low folks, SportSouth (not to be confused with Fox Sports South). Winning series is important!

One of the good things about having a 6 5.5 (thanks a lot, Cecil and your sorry-ass guarantee)-game lead is you don't have to stress about every game. Especially when the Reds come in town. Did you see that lineup last night? Wow. So, speaking of the Reds, they just sent out a letter to their season-ticket holders (no word on if there is such a thing) explaining their "plan." And by plan, I mean, sucking. Here are a few highlights, along with the true meaning: What they said: "While the run production generated by these two veterans (Griffey and Dunn) will not be quickly replaced, we chose to endure the short-term ramifications for the sake of building a strong, competitive team for 2009 and many seasons to come." What they meant: "Those were our two best players, and the guys who actually got what few fans we have left to come to the ballpark. So, yeah, we're in trouble. But we have hope for next year. I am a broken record." What they said: "Since taking ownership of this franch...

Dusty in happier days It's actually kind of cute the lengths that Reds.com has gone to to try to keep their fans engaged; like suggesting that the Reds, now 21.5 games back of the Cubs, are still "a factor" in the division race. CINCINNATI -- The Reds are 21 1/2 games out of first place. But that does not mean they're not participants in the pennant race. Actually, it does. But never fear. Dusty has big plans for next season. And with an abundance of youth on the roster, Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker feels the experience will be good for his club. "It'll be beneficial because we're planning on being in that race next year," Baker said. "Guys that have never been there don't know what it's like. We need to get a taste of it." So Dusty's plan is to start playing the young guys. You know, Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston Jr., Neifi. The young guys. Meanwhile, the (marginally) more intelligent fans over at Red Reporter have begun pondering what they did to deserve a season tha...

I sooo could have gone in a different direction with this The streak is over, but the dream lives on. The Marlins ended the Cubs' 9-game road win streak last night with a 2-1 victory at Dan Marino Schula Manatee Stadium, or whatever that place is called. But no matter, today we have a chance to take 2 of 3 from the fish; no small feat, considering that we had been 0-for-Florida the last two years before this trip. Ryan Dempster will take the mound, looking for his 14 win of the season. Did you honestly think, before the season started, that Ryan Dempster would win 14 games all season? If you say yes, you are a filthy rotten liar. The correct answer is "no, i would have been surprised if Dempster was still in the starting rotation come May." Honest is always the best policy. I'm reminded of this IM exchange between myself and cubsfan2883 the first week of the season: cubsfan2883: well, i guess dempster in the rotation didn't work. me: why? cubsfan2883: 2-0 me: it's 1:22! Memo to Braves: Keep throwing at this guy, and there's going to be a problem. A big one. If you read the comments on Carl's headlines today, King Sori is almost telling the pitchers what's going to happen. I don't care if he posed yesterday. Know what you should have done? Thrown a better f***ing pitch and not suck so bad. This team is itching for a fight. Hadn't had one all year, where last season they were coming in bunches, whether it was between each other or against another team. So, keep throwing inside. Who's over there? Yunel Escobar? Couldn't hurt a fly. Just wait until Crazy Eyez Killa Zambrano comes after you with his belt off. Onto the game. Ted Lilly, even though he lika-to-give-up-the-home-run-ba-ll, has pitched well of late. In seven of his last eight starts, Lilly has allowed three runs or less. It was a snoozefest in the first game, but the best kind with a solid Cubs victory. If you didn't get to watch it, here's what you missed in 10 parts: 1. The Braves are terrible 2. Edmonds was the man yet again 3. Bobby Cox got thrown out for arguing about lights 4. Soto hit a bomb 5. My man Soriano almost got nailed by something named Francisley Bueno 6. Francisley Bueno almost had to die 7. Crappo Marquis smoked and mirrored his way to above .500, luckily again he was going against a terrible pitcher and team that has flat-out given up 8. Dome needs some time off...and soon 9. Howry pitched an inning and didn't give up any runs. There were then rumors about a trumpet sounding and a bearded man riding a horse down from the clouds 10. Did I mention the Braves are terrible? Onto the nightcap... So, after last night's deluge (which made me very happy I didn't make the four-hour trek down I-85), the Cubs and Braves are scheduled for a day-night doubleheader. There is a small switch however. Contrary to the sidebar, it's going to be Crappo Marquis against Charlie Morton in the day game, and then Rich Harden and Jorge Campillo tonight. Not sure when this was all changed, but I just found out. Marquis improved to 7-7, merely because the Cubs threw up a milli runs last time out. Once again, he's facing a pitcher worse than he in Morton, but the Cubs have had trouble in the past with first-time young pitchers. Game today is on WGN, and then tonight's is on Comcast (or Fox Sports South for us in the Bible Belt-yay!). I'll have another thread up for the nightcap as sort of a recap/new thread. Rich Harden goes for the Cubs tonight We came through two weeks of division play with a little wiggle room at the top of the division. The Cubs got more good news this week, as everyone's favorite member of the Northern Beer Team, Ryan Braun, has had to sit out a couple of games with back issues. Keep up the good work with the voodoo dolls, kids, it seems to be working. We last faced, and swept, the Braves at Wrigley in mid-June. Clearly, these are not your big broher's braves, as, for once, they aren't really in playoff contention at 55-63, though they have some momentum coming off their first winning road trip of the season. Rich Harden (and his 2.10 ERA) makes his 6th start for the Cubs tonight, which, to be honest, is WAY more starts than I thought he'd have at this point, given his injury history. Facing Harden will be some kid named Charlie Morton, who sounds like a used car salesman and has never faced the Cubs. Tonight also marks the beginning of the LOHO Fukudome drink...

Tonight, our beloved Cubs will play and epic battle, er, game, against those evil Redbirds from St. Louis. I'm crying on the inside at the thought of facing the Cubs. It's a Bandwagon! Get it?? Okay, it's starting to dawn upon me that we have a couple of soul-searching decisions we are going need to make as Cubs fans. These are personal decisions, and each fan must decide his (or her) own conscience. But end result will define how Cubs fans - as a group - are defined. The first is: What to do about the bandwagon fans? They're starting to come out in force, and it's just going to get worse. A lot worse. But how they are received will speak volumes about true Cubs fans. As some of you know, I am not a life-long Cubs fan. I'm not even a life-long Illinoisan (is that what we're called?) I've been here about five years, and I have embraced Chicagoland with my whole being. I feel like this should have been my hometown, and after living in eight different cities in five different states, this is the only place I would ever call home. I am a lifelong baseball fan. A hardcore baseball fan. And, as a traditionalist and devotee of ballparks, the Cu...

I'm a people person!! The Cubs have won eight out of their last nine non-rain shortened games. The one loser has been, of course, Jason Marquis. Even though he gave a quality start, it was the max you could do. Marquis is now 0-4 in his last six starts, and hasn't recorded a win since mid-June. It's now August, if you're wondering. Now, I'm not saying Jason Marquis is a bad pitcher. Wait. Yes I am. He's bad. Smoke and mirrors. I truly believe the only reason Jason Marquis is on the roster is for luck purposes. Since Marquis has started his major league career, every team he's been on has made it to the postseason. Look it up. When you haven't won a World Series in a century, I guess you'll try anything. I mean, come on. Zambrano, Lilly, Harden, Dempster...and Marquis. He's like the fifth Beatle. Or the fifth Monkee. Or the fifth Door. Those guys rocked it out with four members. Maybe the Cubs should as well. This is no great quintet.   The good news for the Cubs is ...

Rain Rain go away, come again some other day.  (Just not this weekend, I have beach plans) Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face Yesterday's loss was annoying in the way only a shortened game can be.  But with a number of regular starters getting the day off it wasn't as painful as it could have been.  Hopefully most will be back today, although there are rumors of Soto getting the day off.   Up for the Astros today is Wandy Rodriguez.  His ERA has been steadily increasing over the last 2 months, and last week he gave up 5 runs in just 4 and 2/3 to the Reds.   No offense to his parents, but Wandy doesn't really strike me with fear.   The Cubs are countering with my favorite smirking smile Rich Harden.  After a few good outings with double digit strikeouts in each and no win to show for it Harden took a slightly different approach.  With only 9 strikeouts, he pitched a little longer into the game, and bribed Jim Edmond...
Storms disrupt Cubs; Brewers fight in dugout (AP)
2008-08-05 13:45:00
A thunderous boom and a series of lightning strikes around Wrigley Field cut short the Cubs’ chance to rally for a win on a windy, rainy night. For Milwaukee, a storm was Brewing in the team’s own dugout. The Astros withstood a wild night of weather featuring two powerful storms and two delays to ...
Moehler, Astros beat Cubs in rain-shortened game (AP)
2008-08-05 09:20:00
Brian Moehler pitched five sharp innings before two powerful storms rolled into Wrigley Field, and the Houston Astros withstood the wild weather to beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in a rain-shortened game that was called in the bottom of the eighth Monday night. The first delay came in the top of the sixth and lasted ...

I would love to have one of these.  You know, except for with today's date. Tonight, our first-place Cubs (67-45) take on those despicable middle-of-the-pack Astros (53-57).  The Astros just finished off a sweep of the Mets at Shea.  Which would be more impressive if the Mets were, you know, consistent.   Pitching for Houston tonight is Brian Moehler, who in his last outing gave up two runs in 8 2/3 IP. My name is Brian Moehler, and I like hockey.  I'm a douche. Going for the Cubs is our 2008 Hometown Hero: Ryan Scott Dempster.  Dempster just won his second road start of the year last week, and has a 0.86 ERA since the All-Star break. I'll use my Jedi mind tricks to win.  You don't have a chance against me Fun tidbits from previous matchups: 1.  Michael Barrett charged Roy Oswalt in 2004. In 2004 after a Aramis Ramirez homerun, Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt hit Barrett with the first pitch sending Barrett to the mound. 2.  Ryan O'Mal...

Watch as the Pirates attempt not to stick something in their eye Today's the third and final installment of Pirates @ Cubs, early August 2008.  We'll slip into clich? mode and call it the rubber game, mostly because I giggle when I hear the word rubber. On the mound for the Pirates is Ian Snell, of the 6.04 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. Ian Snell is peace-loving and popular with the ladies (or at least two ladies). As you may have been able to tell by his ERA and WHIP, Snell's not doing so well this year, but he won his last game, and John Russell thinks he's back in business: "We know he can pitch," Russell said of Snell, who also won for just the second time in 18 outings. "He's proven it. He's just had a tough time this year. It was nice to see him win (Monday night). That's what we've been looking for. Hopefully, it's a turning point." Hoping to avoid said turning point is Alfonso Soriano, who's fared well against Snell in his career, to the tune of 6-12 and 3 HR. Going fo...

Cubs turn Karstens into Cy Young candidate From the Daily Herald: Pittsburgh pitcher Jeff Karstens, making just his 10th career start and the first in the National League, held the Cubs scoreless on 5 hits over 6 innings, and three relievers sealed a 3-0 victory for the Pirates in front of 41,340 frustrated fans at Wrigley Field. Was Friday's poor showing a classic letdown by the Cubs after an intense series? "I can't say 100 percent that we didn't have a letdown, but you definitely have to give that kid credit," Jim Edmonds said of Karstens. "It would be a shame not to give him the credit that he deserves." A 25-year-old right hander, Karstens' previous major-league experience consisted of 9 starts with the Yankees over the span of two seasons. He entered Friday's game with a career record of 3-5 and a 5.65 ERA, and he'd never faced anyone in the Cubs' starting lineup, which proved to be a problem for the division leaders, The Cubs left the bases loaded against Karstens in ...

Avast, ye land lubbers! After the Greatest, Most Important, Most Splendiforous Event in the History of the World, the sweep of the moral-fabric-of-society-destroy-ing Milwaukee Brewers, you would think that it was time to take a breather against the Pirates, a team the Cubs have dominated all year.  You would think it would be time to relax. You would be right. I AM THE GREAT AND POWERFUL BUTTERS!  WHERE IS YOUR HART, TINMAN, OR YOUR ABILITY TO COMPETENTLY PLAY LEFT FIELD, RYAN BRAUN? The Pitchers You know how we won four games in a row?  Oh, you did.  Well, part of the reason was because the Cubs let up 11 runs in 4 games.  Jason Marquis was a prime reason for this, having not thrown a single pitch.  So you gotta hand it to him. Marquis is 6-6 this year, with a 4.69 ERA.  He is also a Leo, and his horoscope is: Surprises await Leo around every corner, down several long stretches of highway, and over one rather bumpy off-ramp this week. When Jas...

Dear Cubs offense, Salutations. I've greatly enjoyed my time here so far in Chicago. Everyone seems really nice and it's a winning atmosphere. All in all, good times. I think I've done well for you guys, striking out at least 10 batters in every appearance since I've donned the pinstripes. My velocity is there (thankyouverymuch) and I've pretty much put this team in position to win whenever I've left. So, one small request. SCORE SOME RUNS FOR ME! I see you giving Zambrano 7 and Dempster 6, hell, even Marquis got 10 the other day. So hows about sending some love my way? Thanks, and see you out there, Rich In other news... Dave Bush is going for the Brewers. In another case of being Yosted, the bumbling manager is using Bush at home and Seth McClung on the road, meaning lots of time off between starts if Milwaukee goes away for a while. Yeah, no idea. Trade deadline is 4 p.m. today, many people have speculated Scott Eyre will no longer be a Cub by then, but we'll see. And I...
