Buenos Aires hotel restaurants take cuisine cues from around the globe
2011-03-06 10:24:00
It's hard to find a cozier breakfast or brunch spot that at the Resto-Bar at the hip-and-happening Home Hotel in Buenos Aires' Palermo Hollywood barrio. In this month's issue of Today's Chicago Woman, I invited readers to meet me in Argentina, where I not only sipped wine and slept at bodegas, or wineries, in the renowned province of Mendoza, but also dined fabulously at restaurants housed in Buenos Aires hotels. Just as you'll find in many of the world's top cities, some of BA's most interesting dining spots are located in these. A bustling capital city of about three million residents, Buenos Aires features not only traditional Argentine eateries, but restaurants that borrow influences from around the continent--and across...
French Cuisine ? Ratatouille
2011-01-15 17:00:00
It's been a while since I attended the Caring Place Community Kitchen. The reason is Minoo usually demonstrates very simple and old recipes which I had blogged before for this group of participants. The Caring Place participants are mostly new immigrants or people who just started to learn to cook. Occasionally, we will get a participant who are willing to share some very ethnic cuisines and Minoo will let me know to join such kitchen. For this kitchen, we are glad to have Cecile to demonstrate some French recipes. Cecile is borned in Africa (not sure which part, South, maybe) and raised in France. The first recipe that Cecile shared with us is Ratatouille, a popular summer vegetables stew when zucchini, tomatoes and egg plants are plentiful.
Finesse Cuisine

I know I usually use this forum to share my adventures in dining out with the masses, but this week I am going to let the food come to me.  Because next week will be all about the delicious world of catering.   We recently took on the big task of renovating the space directly below my studio.  In the past year it has been transformed into a spacious and beautiful event loft.  To celebrate, we are having a launch party for Room 1520's Aeree loft this coming thursday.  It will feature an eclectic assortment of different foods catered by Finesse Cuisine, owned and operated by my friend Jon Wool.   Jon and I have had a productive business relationship...

Delicious Chinese Cuisine on Kingsway, Between Victoria and Knight, Vancouv
2010-10-26 09:01:00
Suanne and I had to run out for an errand that Saturday weekend. So we plan to go for an slow and leisurely dim sum since we had time to kill. We know exactly exactly the place to go to. I had been there for lunch alone before and I was quite impressed with the variety of dim sum that had on the menu. Some of you know me already, about how I look forward to non-traditional dim sum items. Siu mail, har gow, rice rolls and stuff like that bores me. But this restaurant has more than that. Their dim sum slash lunch menu has over 100 items. And what more, 40% of them are just $2.75. The restaurant name is Delicious Chinese Cuisine, not to be confused with the Taiwanese restaurant called Delicious Cuisine in Richmond which won 2 CRA awards in 2010. Delicious Chinese Cuisine is located along Kingsway somewhere almost in the middle between Victoria and Knight. When I first came across this restaurant, I thought that this is a Mainland Chinese restaurant because of the bright yellow and...

Caribbean Cuisine - Mango Cafe on Isla Mujeres
2010-07-07 15:00:00
"This time, we really should try that place." I remarked to Rob as we puttered by in our rented golf cart "It looks super cute." I've lost count of how many times, I've made that same comment in the almost two years since Mango Cafe opened its doors mid-island on the Caribbean side of Isla Mujeres. The restaurant is just down the road from our favorite hotel, Casa IxChel, yet somehow we have never managed a visit. Breakfast on the island, in the opinion of our children, must be at either Jax, where they can entertain themselves with "the ring game", or Manana, where they like to peruse the selection of used books for sale. In strict compliance with their wishes, thus far, we have never varied from this routine. On this latest trip, however, we were blissfully unfettered by the demands of our children and free to dine where we pleased, so we decided to stop in for a late breakfast.  Mango Cafe is in a pretty building occupying a corner in th...
'Haute stoner cuisine'
2010-05-19 23:42:00
The New York Times has coined a new term for the high-low food upon which chefs like David Chang and Roy Choi are building their empires: "haute stoner cuisine." The story, which takes a few twists and turns but basically argues that pot (and its prevalence in restaurant kitchens) has fueled a culinary counterculture that values outside-the-box creativity and a laid-back dining experience without losing focus on quality, is a must-read for anyone who's ever been really, really ... like, sooo hungry, man, for oxtail poutine. I'm not entirely sure the premise can be extrapolated quite so broadly (there are certainly other factors at work here) but it's an interesting theory. My question for you: Times food writer Kim Severson's examples are drawn almost exclusively from New York and LA, with a...

Nuba Authentic Lebanese Cuisine on West Hastings and Cambie in Downtown Van
2009-12-14 13:06:00
That restaurant is located at the basement of the Dominion Building, one of the grand historic buildings in the young city of Vancouver. This 99 year old building was the tallest building in the British Empire when it was built. Because of its ornate structure, this building had been used to film many movies some of which includes The Neverending Story and Battlestar Galactica. Nuba is the name of the restaurant we went to. The entrance to the basement restaurant is just at the corner of West Hastings and Cambie. Nuba is a Lebanese restaurant. It was interesting to note that Nuba used to operate from the very spot that the La Taqueria Taco Shop is today. I guess business is good and they moved to this new location. Actually Nuba also has another smaller restaurant on Seymour too.
Why is Rick Bayless the expert on Mexican cuisine when he isn't even M
2009-08-11 16:00:00
I've noticed Rick Bayless everywhere lately on television and in magazines. He's considered the leading chef of Mexican cuisine in Chicago and probably the nation and the chef at Frontera Grill and Topolobampo in Chicago.I tried each of his restaurants once. And the food was great, but I never went back.Something just bugged me that a white guy was gaining so much fame for his Mexican cuisine. I'm sure his love of Mexico is genuine and he does good charity work. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, and he is a great chef. But why does the media make him the spokesman for Mexican food in the United States? You can accuse me of being too politically correct. But how...
The Main Types of Jewish Cuisine
2009-08-03 13:11:00
There are few people who can’t name one or two “typically Jewish” foods — bagels, cheesecake, and blintzes have become well-loved around the world. While few of these foods are exclusively Jewish, the Kashrut (dietary laws) and particular factors in Jewish history have helped shape a cuisine that reflects the unique identity of the people ...

Saffron Indian Cuisine on Kingsway, Burnaby
2008-12-29 15:05:00
I brought the project team out for a Christmas lunch just before Christmas. The choice of the lunch places is somewhat limited as I have now a few contractors from India who wanted vegetarian dish. Moreover, I was told that they had been going to the Curry Express stall at the Metrotown Food Court for their daily fix of curry. So, I know they will then enjoy Saffron. Saffron is located on 4300 Kingsway which is just walking distance away from the office. With all the snow still falling, no one was in the mood of driving anyway. Despite the fancy name (Saffron Indian Cuisine), it is just a buffet place.
Tamarind Hill Malaysian Cuisine in New Westminster
2008-11-30 20:10:00
Suanne and I consider Ed and Christina from Doesn't Tazte Like Chicken as people with sharp mouth. No, I am not saying that they talks a lot. That is a literal translation from the Cantonese expression "Tsim Tsui". They know food very well alright. We had been meeting over dinners once every few weeks. It was our turn to select the location and this time, Suanne and I picked the Tamarind Hill Malaysian Cuisine located in New Westminster. The choice was a hands down choice for us as we know Malaysian food very well.

Saturday Evening Dinner at Suzanne's Cuisine in Ojai, California
2008-05-23 23:42:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: There are four to five restaurants in Ojai that always come up as a "not to be missed" culinary destination. Suzanne's Cuisine is definitely one of them. Locals recommended it, visitors recommended it, online reviews were favorable so we had to give it a try. We made reservations over the phone four days in advance for dinner at six thirty in the evening. I was not sure how to respond to their question whether we wanted an inside table or a table on the patio. They noted that the patio is the more popular choice so I went for it. The lady on the other side of the line told me that one of their favorite tables is available and that's where they would seat us. Excellent. On the day of our visit we walked through Ojai and on to the restaurant's location on Ojai Avenue. The building that houses this restaurant is quite large. There is ample parking at the premises. The main entrance is wonderfully decorated with beautiful plants and flowers. It was ...

Rome Q&A: The best neighborhood for “real” Roman cuisine?
2008-05-01 19:05:00
A reader asks: “Do you have any advice for inexpensive, authentic Roman restaurants in the center of town?” Annie Shapiro responds: Here’s the bad news: Rome is a gaping hell mouth of overpriced restaurants aimed at the hungry, innocent traveler. The good news is that real Roman cuisine is actually a cucina povera, or poor man’s fare—a savory waste-not want-not approach to Italian cooking that utilizes the plant and animal parts you weren’t expecting. It’s hearty and filling, and like Southern soul food in the US, it’s tastiest at its cheapest… even in the center of town. Near Piazza Navona, Da Francesco (Piazza del Fico, 29), Da Tonino (Via del Governo Vecchio,18 ), and just Alfredo e Ada (Via dei Banchi Nuovi, 14) offer no nonsense trattoria style dining that shouldn’t run you over €15 a person (including wine!) In Trastevere, Da Augusto (Piazza de’ Renzi, 15) is the bonafide classic. From Campo de’ Fiori, follow the scent of deep frying to Filet...

MACO to launch new architecture and food and rum magazines
2008-04-29 15:56:00
Guess what! We?re extending the MACO magazine family. For the past ten years, we?ve been showcasing Caribbean architecture and interior design in our flagship magazine MACO Caribbean Living, and we?ve had a blast doing this. Documenting the progress of Caribbean architecture and interior design is important. It is one way of recording, studying and enjoying our development as a region. It speaks to our history, culture, lifestyle and all that makes us unique. It also showcases the creativity of architects and interior designers who not only design outside the colonial box in the Caribbean, but also fuse a number of eras and cultural influences to form a modern-day style of their own.Extending the MACO family really is a natural progression. We started MACO Caribbean Living in 1999, and the magazine grew to include a Caribbean Entertainment section and a Destinations section. In 2005, we launched the Destinations magazine, and MACO Caribbean Homes and the MACO Caribbean Interiors Sour...
