Cultural Street Festival in Kathu Village
2009-08-18 15:50:00
A couple of weeks ago there happened one of those local events that (for me) makes Phuket special. The area of Phuket where we live is called Kathu, located between Patong Beach and Phuket Town. It's a big residential area with lots of sub districts (Tung Tong, Ket Ho, Bang Tong etc). We live close to the Baan Kathu area, the old village of Kathu. A walk around this area reveals an older, traditional side to Phuket and a mixture of cultures as demonstrated by the Buddhist temple and the Chinese shrine in Kathu. The area was the center of the tin mining industry which was very important in Phuket from the early 19th century up until recent years.Anyways, in the last week of July I saw this sign (above) in several places in the locality at main road junctions. I am sure many other people saw the signs too. So on 5th August in the early evening I headed to the village to see what was going on. The answer? Plenty going on. On that evening only, there was a street procession through the...
Cross Cultural Dating -- China Style.
2009-08-14 04:51:00
I normally hate this sort of thing, but "Steve" over at Fool's Mountain does such a great job with it, I cannot resist posting on it. The post is entitled, "Cross Cultural Dating," but I think it goes way beyond that and that is my point. The post does a great job explaining the need to be sensitive to other cultures and the advice given definitely translates to the business world and even to dealing with another person within the same culture. What do you think?
Show Your Real Self - Cultural Transperency
2009-08-11 18:54:00
Each company has a culture, whether it’s old school thinking shrouded by huge mahogany desks or the quick and nimble start up who plays Halo at lunch. The good and the bad, the right and wrong, all companies think and act in their own way, and each company has its own unique culture. Some companies ...

Martin Jon on Afterglow, and Chicago Cultural Center Multi-Openings
2009-07-10 17:06:00
Tom Torluemke's Paper Sculptures   I headed over to the Cultural Center yesterday, to hopefully get a sneak peek at what is opening on Friday. When I arrived, I was greeted by two roped-off Michigan galleries  and a dire need for some artwork set in. I reached the southernmost gallery and began to hear people in the space saying, "This is pretty," and "So colorful." Now, one doesn't expect to see ground breaking, or even very challenging work in a room where these words are uttered so readily. The whole time I was in the Gallery, people walking through shined with half smiles and smirks, raised their eyebrows, and even joked with each other about the subject matter within...
Cultural Norms As Law Enforcement Mechanism. Why Demand Letters Still Work
2009-07-07 13:12:00
Wikipedia defines a demand letter as a "letter stating a legal claim (usually drafted by a lawyer) which makes a demand for restitution or performance of some obligation, owing to the recipients' alleged breach of contract, or for a legal wrong." Typically, these letters conclude with the lawyer threatening to sue or the non-lawyer letter writer threatening to go his or her attorney. Such letters have become so commonplace in the United States that they most of the time fail to instill much fear into or much action from their recipient. I know of some lawyers who no longer will write such letters, believing that US companies will not seriously discuss any settlement until sued. I know of a company that manufactures a somewhat dangerous product and it receives maybe 100 lawsuit threatening letters a year from around the world. Before I started representing this company, they would respond to every letter by seeking a quick out of court settlement. I convinced them to change...
The Cultural Moment of Michael Jackson?s Passing
2009-06-26 05:34:00
When Anna Nicole Smith died, a friend of mine, not himself a fan of the professional celebrity, said he burst out crying.  He “couldn’t help” feeling sad.  And so I felt earlier today, upoing learning of the passing of Michael Jackson.  I did not cry, but felt a certain unfathomable sadness. He was, quite simply, one ...

Movies. Dance. Theater. There are a few Latino cultural events happening this week that might interest you.On Wednesday night, there's a free film in Piotrowski Park called "El Estudiante" or "The Student." It's set in Guanajuato, one of my favorite Mexican cities, and is about a 70-year-old man who surprises his family and decides to go to the university there. The film is sponsored by the Latino Cultural Center and starts at dark at 4247 W. 31st St.There's also a flamenco show this weekend by the Ensemble Español at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. What's in a Name?
2009-04-06 18:27:00
In its attempt to more successfully market the cheap and plentiful cod substitute, pollack, British supermarket Sainsbury's will now call it by its French name ?colin.' While pollack caught in British waters is in great demand with the French as ?colin,' British consumers aren't as impressed. Retailers believe shoppers are embarrassed to ask for pollack because of its widely known reputation as a cheaper white fish than cod in the same way people may not be proud to show off their generic or private label goods over well-known national brands.  I don't know how much sense this revamped marketing plan makes though. read more
China's Labor Laws: The Cultural Disconnect Goes Both Ways.
2009-04-06 03:25:00
Last week, I attended co-blogger Steve Dickinson's lecture on China labor law. Steve's lecture was part of a truly superb Doing Business in China seminar put on by Global Nav. The thrust of Steve's speech was that labor laws in China have changed, they are being enforced against foreigners, and they are very different from U.S. labor laws. In a nutshell, the biggest differences are that written contracts with all employees are required in China and firing an employee generally must be for cause. Neither of these are true in the United States. Judging from the audience questions (and this was an extremely sophisticated audience), many were surprised by this and many had trouble understanding the full import. A few days later, Steve and I were talking about this with the Chinese lawyers we work with in Qingdao. In explaining to them some of the cases we have handled for American clients who got themselves into trouble by improperly laying off Chinese employees, it soon bec...
Innovative Cultural Fashion: Sporty Headscarves for the Culturally Aware
2009-03-28 11:00:00
Traditional headscarves can be burdensome for those who wear them for cultural beliefs and engage in an active lifestyle. While they may be culturally fashionable, headscarves may be overly insulated for highly aerobic sports, not insulated enough for cold outdoor activities, and impractical as swimwear which forces people to choose between their values and ability to participate in certain activities. Capsters are a fashionable alternative to the traditional headscarf, with a variety of styles conducive to a variety of lifestyles, and they're pretty stylish too.
Cultural Differences of Russian-British Couples
2009-03-10 09:00:00
Today?s Russian-British couples have a much easier time meeting and marrying than spouses of decades past. Where Russian women look for strong, caring and sober British husbands, British men are attracted to feminine, romantic, ?old-fashioned? Russian women. However, like many other intercultural relationships, they still bring different expectations, values and cultural traditions to their union. ...
Cultural Differences. Impact On Relationships
2009-02-28 09:00:00
Relationships between Russian women and British men present a series of fundamental issues of conflicting attitudes and beliefs which could become the cause of conflict. We consider those cultural differences which might become critical issues when left unresolved in a Russian-British relationship. The comparison of gender role differences, attitude to money and communication between ...

Model of Cultural Dimensions by Hostede
2009-02-03 09:00:00
The next cultural dimension we consider is power distance. The basic issue involved, which different societies handle differently, is human inequality. Inequality can occur in areas such as laws, rights and rules, wealth, power, social status and physical and mental characteristics (Hofstede 2001:80). People in small power distance cultures tend to value equal power distributions, ...
Cultural Dimentions by Hofstede. Uncertainty avoidance.
2009-02-02 09:00:00
Uncertainty avoidance is the extent to which a society feels threatened by unsure and ambiguous situations and consequently searches for statutory structures (Hill 1998:15). The stronger the uncertainty avoidance is, the greater the feeling of threat and the inclination towards avoiding novel situations, argues Hill. Low uncertainty avoidance cultures encourage risk taking and the adoption ...
Hofstede?s Cultural Dimentions. Individualism vrs Collectivism
2009-01-30 09:00:00
Geert Hofstede analyzed national cultures in an empirical investigation from 1967 to 1973 with 116,000 employees from all levels of the multinational concern IBM, in more than 50 countries. He came to the conclusion that national cultures differ in four fundamental cultural dimensions (Goodwin 1999:23): ? Power Distance ? Individualism versus Collectivism ? Masculinity versus Femininity ? Uncertainty Avoidance Later Hofstede and his colleagues ...

Año nuevo, ¿cultura renovada?
2008-12-31 18:00:00
China: When Cultural Differences Matter.
2008-11-05 03:20:00
Regular readers know that I am not a big fan of going overboard on the need to know Chinese culture to do the typical business deal. Better to be a good businessperson than to know what color flowers to bring to a funeral. But, in other contexts, like managing an enterprise, or selling consumer products, culture can be everything. An article in today's Wall Street Journal, entitled, "Lenovo Goes Global, but Not Without Strife," does an excellent job in highlighting this. The article is about Lenovo, but it is really about how cultural differences between the West and China can impact the workings of a business. No doubt, anyone who has done much East-West business will be able to relate to at least some of the following: -- "You don't want everyone saying 'Yes, Yes, Yes' all the time," says Mr. Amelio, a brawny former college wrestler. "You want them to be able to smack you upside the head and say 'Hey, I've got a better idea.'" -- Conference calls were difficult as ...
Derechos de Autor: Bolsillo vs Moral
2008-10-30 00:00:00

Political Elections, Cultural Elections, and the Votes that Really Matter
2008-09-24 17:19:00
By Selwyn Duke To be honest, treating politics isn?t my favorite pastime. Sure, like other commentators I do it, but it?s not something I can truly sink my teeth into. I?ll explain why momentarily. ¿Cuál es el verdadero significado de cultura?
2008-09-04 02:00:00

Why a Cultural Boycott of Israel is Necessary
2008-06-06 03:58:00
by Remi Kanazi At what point does rhetoric stop and effective action begin? For Palestinians, decades of dialogue and supposed peace overtures have proved fruitless, only serving to protect the status quo: sixty years of continual dispossession, forty years of occupation, and a systematic repudiation of international and humanitarian law. The situation for Palestinians will not improve without constructive movement forward—which rejects collusion with the Israeli government by exercising boycott, divestment and sanctions (known as BDS). During the 1980’s, BDS of South Africa included a cultural boycott whereby musicians and artists from around the world were prohibited from performing in the apartheid state. In addition to internationally supporting the subjugated black population, this policy was instituted to express that no real dialogue—economic, academic, or cultural—could take place in concert with the atrocities of apartheid. With regard to Israel, the implementation of ...

Cultural Learnings Of... Swedish High School Graduation
2008-06-01 17:51:00
Some time ago I showed you how Estonians celebrate the graudation of high school, or "gymnasium" (same word, spelt differently in places up here). This week I was in Stockholm for a few days and saw how the Swedish* also celebrate this important time in a young persons life... by getting wasted and riding around in the back of massive trucks with music blaring.  All I had was a gemini and a cassette adapter... happy days. It appears "Time Of Your Life" by Greenday has fallen out of favour with the graduating kidding these days, however I was enthused to see them rocking out to "Living On A Prayer" instead. I can get behind that! Not only were the kiddies riding around on trucks on Friday but there was a massive Iraq conference going on in Stockholm with all kinds of international people like Condi Rice attending. Apparently it was insantiy. For Sweden. Or so the taxi driver said. You get all the good advice from taxi drivers.* I am pretty sure Swede...
