Political Elections, Cultural Elections, and the Votes that Really Matter
2008-09-24 17:19:00
By Selwyn Duke To be honest, treating politics isn?t my favorite pastime. Sure, like other commentators I do it, but it?s not something I can truly sink my teeth into. I?ll explain why momentarily. This election season, my pen has directed many slings and arrows Barack Obama?s way. I criticized John McCain, too, but ...

¿Cuál es el verdadero significado de cultura?
2008-09-04 02:00:00

Why a Cultural Boycott of Israel is Necessary
2008-06-06 03:58:00
by Remi Kanazi At what point does rhetoric stop and effective action begin? For Palestinians, decades of dialogue and supposed peace overtures have proved fruitless, only serving to protect the status quo: sixty years of continual dispossession, forty years of occupation, and a systematic repudiation of international and humanitarian law. The situation for Palestinians will not improve without constructive movement forward—which rejects collusion with the Israeli government by exercising boycott, divestment and sanctions (known as BDS). During the 1980’s, BDS of South Africa included a cultural boycott whereby musicians and artists from around the world were prohibited from performing in the apartheid state. In addition to internationally supporting the subjugated black population, this policy was instituted to express that no real dialogue—economic, academic, or cultural—could take place in concert with the atrocities of apartheid. With regard to Israel, the implementation of ...

Understanding The Culture Of The Destination To Avoid Cultural Shock

Cultural Learnings Of... Swedish High School Graduation
2008-06-01 17:51:00
Some time ago I showed you how Estonians celebrate the graudation of high school, or "gymnasium" (same word, spelt differently in places up here). This week I was in Stockholm for a few days and saw how the Swedish* also celebrate this important time in a young persons life... by getting wasted and riding around in the back of massive trucks with music blaring.  All I had was a gemini and a cassette adapter... happy days. It appears "Time Of Your Life" by Greenday has fallen out of favour with the graduating kidding these days, however I was enthused to see them rocking out to "Living On A Prayer" instead. I can get behind that! Not only were the kiddies riding around on trucks on Friday but there was a massive Iraq conference going on in Stockholm with all kinds of international people like Condi Rice attending. Apparently it was insantiy. For Sweden. Or so the taxi driver said. You get all the good advice from taxi drivers.* I am pretty sure Swede...

Cultural Weekend
2008-05-27 08:03:00
I'm always sad when the weekend comes to an end - especially this one! I spent some quality time with family and friends, and I had a great time attending the Bead International 2008 opening night. The event took place at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, OH. This was my first time visiting the Dairy Barn, and I must say that I am very impressed! Here are a few pics from the show so you can see. :DThis exhibit contains extraordinary examples of both traditional and contemporary beadwork. There were a few beaded handbags, a gourd, a couple of dolls, some wearable art, a large number of bead-paintings, some jewelry, a few indescribable pieces, and way too many quilts. Here are a few of my favourites:Beastby Betsy YoungquistOn The Townby Colleen O'RourkeLynxby Jean ApgarDay & Evening Bagby Valerie NicklowLichtenstein Teapotby Kate Anderson(part of the Beyond Basketry exhibit)and....Engine Co. 6by Yours Truly :DAlso, here's a peek in the gallery shop. When Religion Claims a Friend
2008-05-26 19:08:00
Tragically I must report I?m mourning the loss of my oldest and dearest friend?s brain ? not to illness or accident but rather to religion. Yes, I?m beside myself with grief over the news that my once logical, sensible, intelligent, parallel-thinking friend has fallen prey to societal pressures and joined a Catholic church. OH THE HORROR! What?s even worse is that she actually believes this is good for her and will make her a better person. I?m still trying to figure out what was wrong with the person she already was. La muerte de un ícono pop y su conexión con Chile
2008-05-23 02:00:00
En la columna anterior, me refería a la exposición que habrá en Buenos Aires sobre Marcel Duchamp. Él murió la semana pasada y tuvo una ligazón ...

Reading: Social Information Technology - Connecting Society and Cultural Is
2008-05-11 16:48:00
Last Thursday I received a parcel. Thinking it was a duplicate copy of a hardback purchased recently, I was thrilled to find it was a copy of the Social Information Technology title. When I originally enquired about submitting a paper, a complimentary copy of the book was not promised. So this was a real bonus on two counts, having checked chapter 7 and looked through the final product I'm really delighted to be a contributor. Putting my effort to one side - one of several from the UK - there are some really informative papers here. This morning I read through one -Chapter 19 Technology and Continuing Professional Education: The Reality beyond the HypeMaggie McPherson, School of Education, University of Leeds, UKMiguel Baptista Nunes, Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, UKJohn Sandars, School of Medicine, University of Leeds, UKChristine Kell, Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, UKSection V: Implications of Social Information Techno...

Social Cultural and economic forces make women more likely to contract HIV
2008-05-05 15:54:00
The view of poor & developing countries, In generally we found that women & adolescent girls are more vulnerable to HIV infection on each sexual encounter because of the biological nature of the process and the vulnerability of the reproductive tract tissues to the virus, especially in adolescent girls. For example, young women are generally disadvantaged by gender disparities. In terms of food intake, access to health care and growth patterns, girls are often worse off than boys. The inequalities become evident soon after birth, and by adolescence many girls are grossly underweight. Social Cultural and economic forces make women more likely to contract HIV infection than men. Women are often less able to negotiate for safer sex due to reasons such as their lower status, economic dependence and fear of violence, adolescent girls in the countries. Adolescents in poor families often do not have the option to make real choices about their sexual and reproductive lives, such as...
America's Maoist Cultural Revolution or "I'm for the stupid guy"
2008-04-30 06:15:00
by Stephen P. Pizzo "Anti-intellectualism is often used by dictators or those seeking to establish dictatorships. Educated people as a social group have often been seen by totalitarian elements as a threat because of the tendency of intellectuals to question existing social norms and to dissent from established opinion. Thus, often violent anti-intellectual backlashes are common during the rise and rule of authoritarian political movements, such as Fascism, Stalinism and Theocratic rule. Moreover, because many intellectuals refuse to embrace nationalism, they are also commonly portrayed as unpatriotic and subversive." (Full) When I read an opinion piece, like this one, the first thing I want to know is "where is the author coming from? What are his/her biases?" So let's get that right out of the way. I'm about as average a guy as the Baby Boom generation could create. I was raised by hard-working middle class parents. We were neither rich or poo...
Cultural Issues In The Workplace
2008-04-29 03:47:00
Three cultural issues that exist in the workplace can be music, religion, and ethics. Each of these issues can have a major effect on the workplace environment and the production of the workflow. Music may increase or slowdown the workflow of many companies. Most warehouse jobs allow employees to listen to music during work hours. ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Cultural Issues In The Workplace", url: "http://www.workplacevisions.co-m/2008/04/29/cultural-issues-in--the-workplace/" });
Hilarious Moments of Cultural Insensitivity
2008-04-28 01:22:00
On Saturday, Loren, Gabriel, and I went to have dinner at a restaurant in Glendale, California, the city in which I live. Before I recount a couple of events from that evening, there is some background information that you must know:* Glendale has the largest population of Armenians in the United States.* This past week, the Armenians commemorated the Armenian Genocide?between 1915 and 1923, about 1.5 million Armenians were killed (out of 2.5 in the Ottoman Empire) by the Turkish government.* Modern-day Turkey does not recognize the term "genocide" as an accurate description of what happened, and this is a point of contention between the Armenians and the Turks nearly 100 years later.* Since we were in Glendale, we had an Armenian waitress at the Armenian-run restaurant.First Scene. Gabriel Orders Food:WAITRESS: And for you, sir?GABRIEL: I think I want the Yogurt Kebab. Now this sounds kind of like this Turkish dish I had once. Is this like that Turkish dish? Dowry Murder: The Imperial Origins of a Cultural Crime (review)
2008-04-22 15:39:00
The Hindu custom of dowry has long been blamed for the murder of wives and female infants in India. In this highly provocative book, Veena Oldenburg argues that these killings are neither about dowry nor reflective of an Indian culture or caste system that encourages violence against women. Rather, such killings can be traced directly to the influences of the British colonial era. In the precolonial period, dowry was an institution managed by women, for women, to enable them toestablish their status and have recourse in an emergency. As a consequence of the massive economic and social upheaval brought on by British rule, women's entitlements to the precious resources obtained from land were erased and their control of the system diminished, ultimately resulting in adevaluing of their very lives. Taking us on a journey into the colonial Punjab, Veena Oldenburg skillfully follows the paper trail left by British bureaucrats to indict them for interpreting these crimes agai...
I consider myself a cultural Christian
2008-04-22 06:52:00
Sent in by AngelaLet me first start out by saying that I love Christianity. Many of my fondest memories as a child and some of my dearest relationships are based on this religion. But I am not a believer. There was a time when I struggled to reconcile my doubts about Jesus, the Bible and the Christian Church, but now I am able to completely accept the logic that used to nag me.Despite my evolution of thought, I have not completely expunged Christianity from my life, and I don't think I ever will.I now consider myself a cultural Christian.I feel free to partake in all religious rituals and holidays because Christianity is a part of my family history and culture. I don't skulk away or outwardly protest at family gatherings when a prayer is said, I just respectfully bow my head. I don't take any of it too seriously, it only means something if you let it.People who have strong beliefs about Christianity or Atheism may see this as a dire conflict to be resolved, but life is too short t...

Scottish Cultural Lessons: Humour
2008-04-18 11:55:00
Although these were compiled by Mike Smith of Auld Reekie Rants, I feel that they are sufficiently in the public domain that they are fair game to republish. For those without a Scottish cultural background, I have to say sorry. Detailed explanations available in comments given sufficient groveling or large quantities of unmarked virtual bills.A Glasgow woman goes to the dentist and settles down in the chair. 'Comfy?' asks the dentist. 'Govan,' she replies. What did the Siamese twins from Glasgow call their autobiography? Oor Wullie. A guy walks into an antiques shop and says: 'How much for the set of antlers?' 'Two hundred quid,' says the bloke behind the counter. 'That's affa deer,' says the guy. Did you hear about the fella who liked eating bricks and cement? He's awa' noo. After announcing he's getting married, a boy tells his pal he'll be wearing the kilt. 'And what's the tartan?' asks his mate. 'Oh, she'll be wearing a white dress,' he replies. What do you ...

But what is the nature of this change and how has it impacted on our day-to-day experience? This landmark text proposes an innovative framework for understanding the shifting forms of mass culture and everyday life, and does so by examining changes in a number of important cultural spheres, from food to fashion, tourism to media representations. Vivid and ambitious, it both synthesizes a diverse literature and advances theoretical debates.
