Democratic Campaign: An Absurd and Acrimonious Culture War
2008-05-12 01:30:00 rolling stone: . . . Seldom in American politics has the same side of a single party split into such distinct and acrimonious factions. As virtually identical as the two candidates are in their political positions, there is no longer any common cause left between Hillary lovers and Obama supporters. There is only a culture ...

Video: They came, they saw, they took the wrong side in the 'culture war'
2008-03-22 00:00:00 Remember earlier this week when we told you about the students from Lincoln Christian College who chose to dedicate their Spring Break to the "mission" of converting gays? Yea, well after a week of fun and anti-Science, it's time for...

Culture war ennui: Are 'pro-family' troops sick of the fight?
2008-02-27 00:00:00 Who do you think is really reading "pro-family" new sites like the American Family Association's One New Now: The choirs to whom they're attempting to preach, or the opposition who's challenging the stones they are casting? Well there's not really...

Culture War
2008-02-11 23:04:00 by Akiva at Mystical PathsYitz, commenting on my Defending the Torah vs. Loving Your Fellow article wrote:"While I can "hear" your point to a great extent, I think you kinda lost it in your last sentence, even tho it was in parenthesis:(Of course, it is possible in Israel that some violently secular policeman did choose to cruise a religious neighborhood on Shabbos just to upset the residents. I prefer to look with a good eye, however.)Where is your good eye toward the Chareidim? Do you really feel their pain? If it were Yassamnikim coming thru a Nitzan or other former Hitnatkut area & they booed him, how would you react? If Sharon got out of his coma & drove thru?I realize that I'm probably in the minority, but I have to agree with most of what Ben-Yehuda wrote above. I also once heard from a Rav I highly respect, that the Chareidim shout "Shabbos" out of pain, their pain of seeing another Jew defiling the sanctity of the holy Day. In addition, they say it for themselves - as a k...

Immigration & lllegal Immigration - The New Culture War
2008-01-15 00:53:00 Immigration & Illegal ImmigrationThe New Culture WarImmigration, especially illegal immigration is perhaps the hottest and most emotional issue facing the USA today. So hold on to your hat. This will be a wild ride ...First let us examine one of the true issues Americans really fear but seldom mention ...Americans today think about the cost of illegal immigration. Racism is the wedge conservatives use to distract us from real questions that need answers. If they are so upset with people draining the public treasury, they should protest real drains like the $70 billion of corporate tax income lost in offshore tax havens annually.Politicians and immigration foes are trying to manufacture a new culture war. But the majority of Americans don?t want one and must speak up now to drown out the subtle racism dominating this debate. The next issue is the so-called scheme to eliminate America's borders and merge the country into the North American Union ...The next issue is the fear of Bla...

Culture War and Niggers
2007-12-04 04:22:00 So apparently, Im still a nigger. Observe: While watching Bill O'Reilly (im a big former fan, met the man a few times) he sounds off a list of things detrimental to society; the glorification of sex, a decline in personal resonsibility, and rap music. The first two I understand...the last one?...I thought Death Metal and hate music was just as bad. Maybe I am wrong. I dont promote any form of media that promotes vicious acts against innocent people, or drug addiction, etc...but do we single out a part of black subculture and not white? While listening to Michael Savage (also a former fan), the same things were said. Thats funny. Could it be?.... While at work one day a few months back, my boss (Im in the Marines, so the correct term would be my Staff NCOIC) gathered the Marines together to talk about socially acceptable behavior. He told them that all that rap shit and men walking around with ridiculous jewelry wasnt socially acceptable, but "that Garth Brooks guy has class". Hmmm...
Quick Thought: Driver?s License for Illegal Immigrants
2007-11-07 04:04:00 Have been listening to some of the fascinating arguments in favor of NY providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. I think the one that I find to be the most obvious red herring is the “safety” issue. What we are being asked to believe is that, by allowing these folks to apply for a driver’s license, the roads will be safer because they will somehow magically become better drivers. Now, let’s suppose they fail their driving test and don’t get a license, will they suddenly become law abiding citizens and not drive without a license? And if they can drive well enough to get a license, aren’t they already competent enough to drive whether they have a license or not? The only benefit in the real world to people getting a driver’s license is that people who fail to obtain a license will theoretically not drive. Since these folks are already driving, passing a simple driving test will either be no problem or not keep them off th...
MSNBC going all in
2007-11-06 19:41:00 Apparently emboldened by their impressive ratings as a left leaning cable network, MSNBC is thinking of giving Rosie her own show. As a result, the lunatic fringe will finally have a home of their own in primetime. Wonder if Bill Clinton will be a guest and wag his finger at her with a classic “How dare you…” when she starts channeling the far, far left blogs about 911 being an inside job. Side note: MSNBC doesn’t even crack the top 30. Fox News is 5th, CNN is 27th (which makes me wonder why all the doctors offices I go to insist on locking the TV on CNN… wouldn’t it make sense to select a channel folks actually want to watch), the FOOD Network is 26th!!! CNN and MSNBC can’t even attract as many viewers as the FOOD Network in primetime. Anyway, back to Rosie. Some reminder of what we can expect to see from a new Rosie show. With the freedom that MSNBC is likely to give her to make up anything she wants and present it as fact, it could g...
Who ya gonna blame?
2007-11-04 03:11:00 Submitted for your review: You are driving down a street, cell phone to your ear, reaching for another fry with a cup of Coke wedged between your thighs, when a young boy darts into the street after a ball. You swerve and hit a parked car… who’s to blame? You know the land is below sea level, on a fault line, along a coast prone to hurricanes, but you build a million dollar house anyway. Nature huffs and puffs and blows your house down. Who should pay? The area you live in is prone to major fires but all you can do is ensure you have a good evacuation plan because the state has decided that brush thinning, removal of trees within feet of your house or even dead trees in some instances are all prohibited due to environmental concerns. A fire is started by an arsonist, another by downed power lines, another by lightning, and yet another by a child playing with matches. Who do you blame? Who should pay? In each of these cases, the proximal cause is clearly defined. The c...
American Whistleblowers Imprisoned in Iraq [Dispatches from the Culture War
2007-08-27 11:16:00 The AP reports: One after another, the men and women who have stepped forward to report corruption in the massive effort to rebuild Iraq have been vilified, fired and demoted. Or worse. For daring to report illegal arms sales, Navy veteran Donald Vance says he was imprisoned by the American military in a security compound outside Baghdad and subjected to harsh interrogation methods. There were times, huddled on the floor in solitary confinement with that head-banging music blaring dawn to dusk and interrogators yelling the same questions over and over, that Vance began to wish he had just kept his mouth shut. Madison and Majoritarian Tyranny [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]
2007-07-23 11:02:00 “The United States isn’t a democracy, it’s a republic.” So goes the oft-repeated cliche. But what exactly does it mean? The American Heritage dictionary defines republic as A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president or as A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them. It defines democracy, on the other hand, as government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. Going by the dictionary definitions, then, this old cliche is a tautology; republic and democracy are essentially synonyms. The key to the American system, at least in theory, is not that it is a republic rather than a democracy (because it is both) but that it is is liberal democracy, which is a system in which ...
Saying Goodbye to a Father [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]
2007-07-10 21:29:00 A member of the ScienceBlogs family recently lost his father and has written a beautiful essay about the experience. It brought tears to my eyes because there were so many elements to his experiences that echo my own. He delivered the eulogy at his father’s funeral, as I did at my mother’s (for that full story, go here). And in describing his father he used the very same Emerson quote that I used to describe my father in a tribute I wrote to him on his 70th birthday. The thought of losing my dad, who just turned 72 and is thankfully in very good health, is unfathomable; to read about EM’s similar feelings toward his dad was very moving. His description of the last few moments, of telling someone you love that it’s okay to go, that you’ll take care of one another and you’ll be okay, brought a flood of memories coming back. I have said those words, first to my uncle and, a year later, to my mother. I urge you all to read it, but keep a box of kleene...
God's Wrath, Christ's Peace, and the Culture Wars
2007-06-18 21:36:00 Catholic theologian James Alison's essay "Wrath and the gay question: on not being afraid, and its ecclesial shape" is not only the best explanation of the Atonement I've seen in a long while, but also represents (to my mind) a more helpful direction for gay-affirming Christians than merely hunting for proof-texts that support our position and explaining away those that don't. Alison contends that human societies constantly seek self-definition by scapegoating outsiders. When Christ, the only completely innocent person, voluntarily assumed the scapegoat role, he exposed the sinfulness of that entire system. Never again could we in good faith believe that spiritual purity depended on exclusion. If community must be founded on sacrifice, Christ was the sacrificial victim and the entire human race became a single community, united by our responsibility for his death and by his equal love for us all. Yet Alison also finds fault with the liberal "many fla...

Culture war of Islam on society
2007-02-20 21:52:01 Since 9/11 Americans have been on alert to the real risks terrorist pose. The attack on 9/11 profoundly changed my life as I am sure it did yours. After 9/11 one could not look upon society and culture the same. America and its citizenry lost the innocence of just being carefree, just being able to ...
A War of Civilizations, or a Culture war?
2007-01-31 15:04:02 D’Souza’s controversial new book argues that the culture war is not limited to America, and that the obscenities and immorality pushed by western cultures into more conservative societies are part of the reason that many Muslims were sympathtic to those behind 9-11. As one who lives and has worked overseas, I must agree with him. ...
A Quagmire In The "Culture Wars"
2006-10-27 19:33:02 I once asked awhile ago who it was who started the so-called ?culture wars,? and I never received an answer. And somehow, based on this bit of theorizing by Amy Sullivan that appeared on yesterday?s editorial page of USA Today, I don?t think I?m going to get an answer anytime soon, seeing as how it is utterly full of tripe (this is actually a companion of sorts to the hit piece by CNN?s Candy Crowley the other day).Despite my objections, I should give USA Today credit for putting this into a blog and allowing readers to post comments to the story online (would that Philadelphia?s ?newspaper of record? did the same thing). Why Democrats are losing the culture warRepublicans? edge: Seeing the problemAnd by the way, as nearly as I can determine, the ?problem? is that Democrats/liberals/progressives-/whatever don?t bend over backwards for people who will never agree with them the same way that ABC producer Mark Halperin did yesterday).By Amy SullivanOn the surface, solid majorities of Ame... |
