Curiosities
2008-09-04 06:40:00 I recently came across an early-1970s hockey magazine from Czechoslovakia* -- which has a bunch of cool and interesting ads in it. Some remarkably similar to North American ads at the same, others very different. I'll be posting them here from time to time, until I run out or get bored. The bit along the side says, roughly, "for modern men from the national company." I'm not sure which national company; hard to tell whether this is an advertisement for "Rex" or "Kras Brno." "Kras Brno" is listed as a garment producer that went out of business in the 1990s; there's a business called "Rex" at Podnásepní 1 in Brno, if you want to drop by.It's kind of reassuring to know that even in the murkiest depths of the Cold War, both sides had goofy pants.* - the magazine is devoted to the ZKL Brno hockey club -- ZKL has evolved over the decades into our new hockey heroes, HC Kometa Brno. They came through and won the Tipsport Cup on Tuesday, scoring three times in the final period to rally fr...

RSS feeds for your IPOD
2008-03-18 13:38:00 It is possible to get your RSS feeds synchronized with your ipod. This is made possible by a cool looking application called ipodagent. If you are looking for the free(beta) version you can download it from here. (if you go to the vendors website they have a later version, however it is no longer free. you can go here for this. How does it work? You fire up the program, enter the address of any RSS feeds that you would like to synchronize with your ipod and click on synchronize. It really is as simple as that. The rss feed then is available under the notes section of your ipod. I have a video ipod, but I am sure it works on earlier versions as well. Why not give it a shot, if you commute to work, or ever have a bit of spare time waiting around, you can read your favourite blog on the go! Evolution of Tech Companies? Logos
2008-03-18 05:26:00 Source: Adobe PressIn 1982, forty-something programmers John Warnock and Charles Geschke quit their work at Xerox to start a software company. They named it Adobe, after a creek that ran behind Warnock?s home. Their first focus was to create PostScript, a programming language used in desktop publishing. When Adobe was young, Warnock and Geschke did everything they could to save money. They asked family and friends to help out: Geschke?s 80-year-old father stained lumber for shelving, and Warnock?s wife Marva designed Adobe?s first logo.OnlineHardware.blogspot.co-m

Hour Glass, from Curiosities of the Church: Studies of Curious Customs, Ser
2007-09-21 13:51:00 “Of the few remaining specimens of the hour-glass, a fine one is preserved in the church of St. Alban’s, Wood Street, London. It is mounted on a spiral column near the pulpit, and the minister can conveniently reach it when preaching. The frame is brass gilt, the design chaste, and the workmanshipp of a superior order. It is pleasing to learn that the old relic is guarded with zealous care. This curiosity of the olden days attracts much attention from visitors to the church.” (p. 117) Hour glasses (giant egg-timers with sand in them) were used in churches to time the length of the sermon; long sermons were especially popular in the 17th century, and could easily stretch ot three hours or more.(read more...)

Culinary curiosities
2007-07-30 11:12:00 There is always which new to discover in this strange country. Japanese drink much dte and have naturally also appropriate dte fields. And like everything in Japan the fields are homogeneously, cultivated, unnatural, as artificially straightened and formed. Everywhere one sees the meter-long dte hedges, which look like a seat of Ikea with round seat face. At the edge of all dte fields high fans are set up, which spread an easy Briese in the morning hours, particularly in the winter, so that the dte sheets do not freeze from the rope. Dte field If we are too lazy for cooking, whereby am the jenige to 99.9% I, which cooks, then there are enough leckere finished things to buy. Extremely lecker is thereby Sashimi. Raw fish. A plastic box, filled with kleingeraspeltem radish and whereupon few disks a fish of verchieden kinds, whose name I did not know. But the ever dark red fish was, so much the better tasted it. The coronation/culmination was Bonito. It was dark red. One dipped the fish...

Random Curiosities
2007-02-24 02:13:01 Today, I am featuring a variety of tunes that I've been listening to lately. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.Bardo Pond: Destroying AngelFrom: Ticket Crystals [ATP, 2006]First off, is a sludgy, psychedelic slab of wax from Philadelphia's Bardo Pond. Bardo Pond's music can best be described as long passages of transcendental and psychedelic "stoner rock" which is highly influenced by Black Sabbath, Acid Mother's Temple, and My Bloody Valentine. Destroying Angel is the first track on the band's latest mind-blowing effort entitled Ticket Crystals. While Ticket Crystals is a mellow album for the most part, this song rips out the walls of your speakers with loud, distorted and droning guitars, propulsive drumming and dynamically searing vocals. After the first verse, the band maintains this intensity, while the lead singer's wordless, yearning moans and psychedlic flute playing give the track a sense of mysticism. Absolutely amazing!Radian: Rapid Eye MovementFrom: Juxtapositi...
