Chicago Restaurant - Eat curry, it kills cancer cells
2009-11-01 22:25:00
Just this past week, a report from Reuters in London alerted us to a new finding - curry kills cancer cells!  A compound found in the blend of spices known as curry actually stimulated cancer cell death in the lab.  So not only does curry give a distinct taste and varying level of heat on the buds, it may help prevent cancer (esophageal in this particular study).     ...

My quick analysis: AMEN!I did like him going into the season, but as the season progressed, I didn't like how he handled the team. So I am happy with the move, but I want to see where the go from here. That's all I need to say at this point.Who do you guys think is going to be the next Pistons coach? Pistons fans, how happy are you about this??
Indian Curry Breaks Up Dementia Plaques In Mice
2009-06-28 03:13:00
Don't throw away your curry jar; it just may keep you from developing Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia.  People from India and other cultures in the east where turmeric grows have a very low incidence of Alzheimer's, an observation which led to some recent mice experiments at Duke University.
Prospect of the Day - Stephen Curry
2009-06-22 02:20:00
Stephen Curry, Junior, Davidson, NBA Position: PG/SG, H: 6'3, W: 181, Age: 21  The level of talent around Stephen Curry of both his teammates and his competition often makes it difficult to gauge how well he's really playing.   It's obvious that Curry carries his teams, and defenses game plan to do nothing other than stop Curry.   Given that type of attention, Curry doesn't get many open looks and always has intense coverage....

Veggie Wednesday: Cauliflower and Pear Curry
2009-03-11 05:04:00
Last week we had one of those throw-together-meals for dinner. Cubed chicken breasts, bagged frozen veggies and bottled curry sauce. I also had a few pears on-hand that needed to be used, so I threw them into the mix. The combo of cauliflower and pear was so good that I decided to make it again as a vegetarian dish.Ever since my friend Jodie sent me a bunch of fun stuff from Japan, including several packages of Vermont Curry, I've been hooked on it. It's sweeter than most other curries and smoother, as well. I took the Wafuu recipe from Saveur and did my own thing with it, using pears rather than apples and using my own blend of veggie. Here is the recipe with my changes in blue. Of course, the curry blend you use will change the flavor of the finished dish, so make sure to use a curry you're fond of.Japanese-Style Chicken Curry(Wafuu Curry)SERVES 4Wafuu curry has a cult following in Japan, where many fondly remember eating it at home and at school functions. Eddy Curry Likes The Band Ok Go
2009-03-09 20:03:00
Today, Eddy Curry's name was in some headlines saying he's open to leaving the Knicks after this year. Before we talk about the big party Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni were planning to celebrate, let me tell you how I bet Marc Berman got this story for the New York Post:So, Eddy Curry has an iPod Touch. Marc or some other Post reporter found this out because he saw him with it at practice. So, in order to get the true scoop on the soap opera that is the Knicks, they get some hacker to hack into it. They can look at all his information while his gear's in da locker. While going through his playlist titled, "these songs r da best," they found a couple of smash hits from the band Ok Go. Then, when looking at his txt's, they found one sent saying, "Here we go again, I can't do this 7 seconds or less man."Also, when asked about his conditioning, Eddy really praises people that run on treadmills. "You know guys that are able to perform on those high performance machines, especially...

On Curry
2009-02-19 14:44:00
This all began with a curry. A curry that was neither heavily spiced nor very hot. A curry that didn’t come from India or Thailand and that contained neither huge amounts of cumin nor coriander nor curry leaves. This curry made me look at it and say out loud, “What the hell makes this a curry?” Goon, who as usual wasn’t ...

Curry Leaves Chutney / Kariveppilai Chutney
2008-12-15 09:32:00
Curry leaves are one of the staples of Indian cooking. Its the one herb that we cannot do without and you will find this in practically every Indian kitchen, or shall I say refrigerator :) However limited space people have around their houses and apartments, its not uncommon to see at least one curry leaves plant that is carefully watered and tended to. My mom has about three plants around the house and my sis has practically a tree growing out of her backyard. The house we moved into first in Singapore had 3 plants outside the front door. A neem plant, a money plant and curry leaves! The other 2 died when I went to India for 3 weeks but the curry leaves plant harbored on and was still standing strong and healthy when we moved out 2 weeks back. I miss breaking out fresh sprigs of curry leaves while cooking but some good things must come to an end. However, I didn't leave before I made this super-quick chutney one day. As we know, curry leaves are just added for flavor to dishes and m...
Kathrikka Podi Curry / Brinjal Cooked in Roasted Spices
2008-12-10 10:23:00
I apologize to all those brinjal haters out there for posting so many brinjal recipes but these are quick and easy and one of the vegetables that are available at all times for me. Also, I love brinjals :DThis one is a traditional Tamil Brahmin Recipe except that I made a slight twist in it and added pureed onions. You can omit that and you will get a dry fry dish. I wanted something that was slightly soft and not fried. What I Used:Brinjal / eggplant - 2 cups, cubedOnion - 1 small, ground to a paste or chopped fineMustard seeds - 1/8 tspOil - 1 tbsp (preferably gingelly/sesame oil)Salt - to tasteTo dry-roast and grind:Dhania / malli - 2 tsp (or 3 tsp dhania powder)Bengal gram / Chana dal / kadala parippu - 1 tbspUrad dal / uzhunnu parippu / uzhutham paruppu - 1 tspDried red chillies - 4, adjust to tasteCurry leaves - a fewHow I Made It:1.
Keerai Masiyal - Cheera Curry - Mashed Spinach Curry
2008-09-29 06:53:00
This is a true blue Tamil Brahmin recipe and a great and easy way to include greens in your weeknight dinners. I used Amaranth Leaves for this, since they are always available in the Chinese wet markets here. Amaranth, also known as pigweed (anyone else find that name strange?)in English, Thotakura in Telugu, Araikeerai or Mulaikeerai in Tamil, is fast becoming my favorite kind of leaf-food. What's even better is, they are available cleaned and it just requires me to lightly wash it before cooking, as opposed to the tedious process of cutting the roots off and going inch by inch over the vegetable from root to tip looking for a grain of sand you are inevitably bound to miss and your husband is sure to bite into first thing at dinner.Chopped Amaranth LeavesI used amaranth leaves to make Palak Paneer too and this time around, didn't have the patience to try something that elaborate. 10 minutes of rummaging around in my recipe collection brought me to this nice and easy recipe for K...
Aloo Gobi / Potato-Cauliflower Dry Curry
2008-09-22 07:48:00
I am not a huge fan of Aloo Gobi but TH loves it! He loves anything with potatoes in it and cauliflower is his favourite vegetable. Last week he actually requested for this dish to have with chapatis, and it came as a surprise cuz normally he leaves the decision-making to me.This is a simple, easy recipe that was done in about 20 minutes, perfect for a weeknight quick-fix dinner. It is also unarguably one of the most popular dishes in North Indian restaurants everywhere, especially outside India. A meal out is not considered complete without a nice and mildly spiced Aloo Gobi to go with the rotis (flat Indian bread)What I Used (to serve 2):Cauliflower/Gobi - 2 cups, cut into floretsPotatoes/Aloo - 2 medium sized ones, cubedOnions - 1 big, chopped fineTomatoes - 1 cup, pureedGinger garlic paste - 1 tsp (or use 2 garlic pods and a 1/2" piece of ginger, both minced)Chilli powder - 1/2 tspTurmeric powder - 1 pinch (about 1/4 tsp)Coriander powder (malli podi)- 1 tbspCumin powder (jeeraka...

Aloo Tindora Curry
2008-09-08 05:34:00
This is another quick-fix recipe with bits and pieces of leftover vegetables. The way I feel about aloos (potatoes) is, if I have no other veggies to cook with or  not enough, then it makes a good add-on. I have tried it with different vegetables and recently, gave a shot at using it with tindora/ivy gourd. There was some tindora left over after making a stir-fry with it so I went ahead and came up with this recipe. What I Used:Tindora/Gerkins/Ivy Gourd/Kovakka - 1 cup, choppedAloo/Potatoes - 2, cubedGrated coconut - 2 tbspDried red chillies - 4Jeera - 1 tspTurmeric powder - a pinchUrad dal - 1/2 tspMustard seeds - 1/4 tspCoconut oil - 2 tspSaltHow I Made It:1. Wash, peel and boil the potatoes till almost soft. 2. Cut the tindora in small pieces and boil in some water till cooked. 3. Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds and urad dal. Break the red chillies into 3-4 pieces and fry lightly in the oil. Add jeera and turmeric powder and fry for about 10 seconds. 4. Finally ad...
In search of a decent curry on the Sunshine Coast
2008-09-05 00:23:00
It's time to exact my revenge on all those revolting bowls of gravy I've been served in the 'curry' houses of Queensland. For all the soft poppadoms, raw meat starters and insipid spices, I'm going to get my own back... or a libel suit maybe. Firstly, let me start by saying that most restaurant experiences in South East Queensland are really good. Whatever restaurant you choose will offer well cooked, interesting food and plenty of it, served by friendly staff. Now try going to an Indian restaurant. If, as a pom, you wanted to be able recreate those exuberent Friday nights out in the local balti hut, forget it. For a start, they're usually all shut by 10pm, having been trying to waft you out of the door since 9pm. And secondly, the dining experience itself is grim to say the least.Coming from a nation whose favourite national dish is chicken tikka masala (ok, I know it was invented in Glasgow with a tin of tomato soup), whose Indian and Bangladeshi populations provide the most ...

Quick and easy Thai curry sauce
2008-08-13 05:04:00
Definitely quick and easy. Authentic? Not remotely. I’m not Thai, don’t blame me for liking this. Spicy? Somewhere between spicy and really, really hot. So if you like Thai food, you’ll probably like this. If you haven’t had Thai food and aren’t into spicy-hot, it’s probably not for you. 1 can Thai curry paste, any ...

Brinjal Curry
2008-07-28 09:34:00
This is a super simple yet yummy recipe I got from a friend who had invited us for lunch when we had just moved here. She had made a lot of dishes and this was my absolute favourite. What's better, it uses only 4 main ingredients, not counting salt and oil! She also told me that this is an adaption of a SriLankan recipe. If you love brinjal (also known as aubergine, kathrikka, ennagayi, in various languages), then this is a sure shot winner recipe. What I Used:Brinjal - 1 cup, choppedOnions - 1 big, choppedRed chilli powder - 1 tspTurmeric powder - 1/4 tspGingelly oil (nallennai/sesame oil/til oil) - 3 tbspCurry leaves - 10Salt - to tasteHow I Made It:1. Heat oil and add the chopped brinjals. Note that you have to use gingelly oil for this dish. Anything else will spoil the taste completely.2. Fry till the pieces start breaking up and become a bit soft. At this stage, add the onions, turmeric powder, chilli powder, and curry leaves.3. Let it cook for a good 20-25 minutes till the oni...

Traditional Lunch Series - Day 6 (Mor Kozhambu, Vazhakkai Curry)
2008-06-08 13:48:00
Sorry for the two day break in series...not that i did not cook, but the weather has been too glorious to sit and blog. I have been lingering around in the balcony watching from the heights as the monsoons sweep over the landscape, clicking photos of the grey clouds with silver linings, and generally lazing around in the pleasant turn in the weather scene. It was so hot and sultry beginning June that I was fervently praying for an early monsoon - and it has started in full force from the middle of last week. The plants in my balcony are enjoying it and so am I :) Here's the pending two days account one after the other. I also have a wonderful bread coming up for you, called the Tassajara bread that we baked yesterday. Will find some time to sneak the baking notes somewhere in the middle of the traditional lunch series.Day 6 Menu - Mor Kozhambu & Vazhakkai curryMor Kozhambu is a buttermilk based Tamil 'kadhi', which can have fried or sauteed okra pieces, chunks of cooked white...

Here's wishing my dear friend Sig and her partner of 10 years Siv a very Happy Anniversary! Here's to many many more decades of togetherness, love and warmth sweetheart.Nothing much to ramble or 'show' today. The menu was an attempt to clear up the Sword beans (English equivalent of Avaraikkai ) my help had chopped up yesterday. Traditional Lunch Series - Day 3 ( Keerai Milagoottal, Cabbage Curry )
2008-06-03 07:45:00
Yesterday I managed to get some fresh spinach at my local grocery shop. Cabbage is another thing I always pick up on my visits. It is a useful thing for making simple saute curry for lunch, or koottu. For dinners, it adds crunch to our noodles / fried rice - and I even use it to add bulk to left over dosa batter to make crunchy uthapams for breakfast.Spinach is best used on the same day or at max the following day. That's how Keerai Milagootal managed to feature on today's menu. The ideal partner to this would be a potato roast (always ideal for everything :) or a sliced plantain roast. Since I rarely find the slender plantains suited for this curry, cabbage seemed the next best option.Milagoottal or Kootan is a Kerala derivative into Tamil cuisine and since my roots are in Tirunelveli which is almost close to the Kerala border, some of our dishes have the 'ubiquitous to Kerala' coconut ground in the gravy of the vegetables. Aviyal is as much our cuisine as much as it is a part ...
