Curt Schilling leaning toward retiring
2008-08-19 04:25:00
Curt Schilling says he’s leaning “very heavily” toward retirement and is waiting until spring training approaches to see if he wants to try to pitch again. The Boston Red Sox right-hander, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on June 23, said in his most recent blog entry that his shoulder “is getting better fast” and “I’ve still ...

Curt Schilling plans to throw on Tuesday for the first time this season. The Boston Red Sox right-hander, on the 60-day disabled list with an ailing shoulder, is scheduled to throw 25 pitches from 60 feet. If that goes well, he will begin a regular throwing program. “He’s got himself to the point where he’s excited he’s ...

Curt Schilling Talks Global Warming With A Snowman
2008-03-21 13:23:00
Curt Schilling is known for being a big game pitcher, and a big mouth. Schill’s not a trash talker he just has an opinion on any and every thing. There’s a fine line between opening up and needing to zip it up, and 38 tends to fall on the side of the latter. While I obviously rarely agree with Curt’s opinions I think he handled the global warming question from the snowman pretty well.. For a politician. He admitted his own wrongdoing in the beginning and then laid into others for their similar wrongdoing. It’s like he’s been on the Hill instead of the mound all of his life. Also, I don’t wanna point out the lack of diversity amongst the McCain supporters, but when a snowman is one of the darkest people in the crowd I have to say something. Curt Schilling May Not Be Able to "Shoulder" the Load in 2008
2008-02-08 00:00:00

Curt Schilling Out For The Season?
2008-02-07 21:46:00
News today is bad for anyone looking for mid-valued starting pitchers.  The Angels announced Kelvim Escobar still has shoulder issues and will begin  the 2008 season on the DL.  A couple weeks ago, I posted a list of pitchers who struck out between 159 and 190 hitters in 2007 and found that 64% of those pitchers from 2005 & 2006 using the saem criteria failed to strike out as many batters the following year.  Escobar looks like he is the first of an expected 11.59 pitchers from the 2007 list who won't strikeout as many batters as he did in 2007. In Boston, speculation is beginning that Curt Schilling needs major shoulder surgery and will miss the 2008 season, if he does.  I am curious about when the Red Sox became aware of a potential problem.  Recall a couple weeks ago, rumors surrounding the alledged Boston Red Sox offer for Johan Santana changed to say LHP Jon Lester was no longer on the table.  Just a coincidence? FWIW, Schilling was one o...
The New York Giants Better Watch Out

The above picture was taking of Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots. Seems he got a little banged up last weekend. He assures everyone that it's just the typical bumps and bruises you can expect in the game of football.Instead of cheering, if I was a Giants fan I'd be a little worried. I remember another incident involving a star player on a Boston franchise and his foot.

Curt Schilling To Stay With the Red Sox...Pettitte Declines An Option Year
2007-11-06 11:12:00
Here are two pieces of good news for all of us in Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International to help start your Tuesday on the right foot. Number one, according to the Boston Herald and Curt Schilling himself, he and the club are very close to an agreement on an incentive-laden one year contract. Here is what the man himself had to say, from his blog......"Talks with the Red Sox are moving. Theo and I have spoken multiple times daily over the past week and given the current situation I am feeling very confident that we will be able to finalize a 1 year contract to allow us a chance to finish our career as members of the Red Sox organization.?There are some things to iron out and details that must be finalized for both sides but barring something unforeseen or outrageously odd happening I feel very comfortable that I will finish my career here.?Peter here, and that is such a welcome turn of events. Cubs Rumors: Wood, Schilling
2007-11-03 18:36:00
Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times has a Cubs update for us this morning. Let's start with Kerry Wood, who would garner plenty of interest on the open market.  Despite rumors that Wood might look elsewhere for a chance to start, he's likely to stay with the Cubs as a starter. The Cubs are on Curt Schilling's list, and they'll be in the mix for him if his price is reasonable.  I take that to mean not much more than $12-13MM.  A cheaper option might be Hiroki Kuroda, though that could take a three-year commitment.  So, perhaps a larger cash outlay.  The Cubs will probably pass on Alex Rodriguez, though he would've been a nice fit at shortstop in my opinion.  Options: the Cubs exercised Daryle Ward's for $1.2MM.  They passed on Steve Trachsel's $4.75MM option, which is a relief since there had been rumors of exercising it.  Cliff Floyd is probably gone as well. showad();

Boston Globe Notes: Schilling, Kuroda
2007-10-29 16:36:00
A few notes from recent Boston Globe articles... Curt Schilling recently posted at Sons of Sam Horn regarding his future.  Nothing has changed - he'd still like a one-year deal from the Red Sox but failing that he wants to join a winner or play for a team with young pitchers to tutor.  He mentions that "dollars will be a significant factor" if he leaves Boston.  The SOSH threads can be found here and here. Sounds like the Cubs were more than just interested in Hiroki Kuroda last winter - they may have made an offer.  He considered a deal with the Cubs but stayed in Japan for personal reasons.  The Cubs and Mariners are considered the top contenders for him this winter. showad();
Odds and Ends: Abreu, Beckett, Helton, Schilling
2007-10-26 20:47:00
Friday afternoon rumor tidbits... The Indians will probably let Kenny Lofton leave while exercising Joe Borowski's $4MM option.  No big surprise there. Nor is it a surprise that the Yankees are heavily leaning towards exercising Bobby Abreu's $16MM option. From the what might've been department: Red Sox owner John Henry was in favor of signing A.J. Burnett instead of trading for Josh Beckett.  One could make a solid argument that the Red Sox would be better off if Henry had gotten his wish.  Beckett and Julio Lugo combined for 8.6 wins at $14MM this year while Burnett and Hanley Ramirez combined for 14.8 wins at $12.4MM (according to WARP). From that same department - Tom Gage notes that the Tigers once nearly acquired Todd Helton for Tony Clark.  There were many Clark rumors from 1999-2001 before the Red Sox claimed him off waivers.  I heard Buck and McCarver talking recently about how Helton is not a product of his home park.  For the record Helton...
Randomness Part I

- A nice article about California Tortilla in Monday?s Washington Post with the following quote, ?Another newly opened restaurant in Reston needs more word of mouth to boost traffic.? Well, I?m doing the best I can to help the word of mouth for the Cal-Tort in Reston, so GO TO CAL-TORT IN RESTON! Of course, reading the article also makes me worry a little bit about overexpansion.- When I was in Utah last week, I learned that Utahns is spelled, well, Utahns. However, according to Microsoft Word, Utahns should be spelled Utahans. - I also learned that someone named Frank Lynch is on the ballot in Utah?s Democratic primary for President. According to Frank Lynch?s website, he is ?the most important emerging national leader since Abraham Lincoln came out of nowhere to transform America.? I?m going to go out on a limb here and say Abraham Lincoln will be slightly more important than Frank Lynch.- Major League Baseball is having a ?Steal a Base, Steal a Taco? promotion with Taco Bel...
Red Sox Rumors
2007-10-22 18:58:00
The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes has some mild hot stove chatter today. Tim Wakefield's $4MM option is likely to be exercised. There was some speculation a week ago that it could be declined, but no one really believed it.  It's still a bargain. Julian Tavarez's $3.85MM option is a borderline call, and Edes seems to think it will be declined. Nothing new with Mike Lowell - he wants to return, but the door's open for the Phillies or Yankees if the Red Sox won't pony up enough years. Most folks expect Curt Schilling to leave.  But if he's still up for one year and $13MM the Sox should do it. Mike Timlin will pitch again but it might be elsewhere.  Timlin hasn't been with another club since '02, when he pitched for the Cardinals and Phillies. Matt Clement will depart.  If his tryouts and MRIs come up clean and he can hit 90 mph there will definitely be teams offering him incentivized contracts.  Here's one I missed from a few weeks ago: the Padres may m...
Schilling Open To Phillies
2007-10-13 19:07:00
We learned yesterday that the Phillies have already had internal discussions about bringing in Curt Schilling.  Schilling was asked about the possibility yesterday, and confirmed that Philly is on his "short list" assuming they'd want him back. Schilling might be one of the few free agent buys this winter that actually works out.  He turns 41 soon, so health is obviously a concern.  With a 4.4 K/BB in 151 innings, his command is as amazing as ever.  The commitment would be low-risk, probably one year at $15-16MM.  And switching from the AL East to the NL - what pitcher wouldn't love that?  Just ask Ted Lilly.  If Schilling and Cole Hamels could combine for 360 innings next year, the Phils would be in great shape. Here's the problem: the Phillies supposedly have $20MM to burn.  Give a minimum $13MM of it to Schilling, and you fall short on Mike Lowell by at least $4MM.  If the budget is truly that strict, perhaps this can be s...

Red Sox Back in the Driver's Seat Again [Addison Quale]
2007-08-27 20:23:00
It hasn't felt this way around Boston for a long time. As long as 2 months some might say. It's the first time in a while people have felt comfortable with the Sox lead in the AL East and confident they can hold off the Yanks. A big turning point was this past Friday. The Sox swept a double header against the White Sox on the backs of Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling. And as Curt Schilling said in the post-game interview of the night-cap, "We're feeling really good. Things are clicking finally." This is actullay just a paraphrase mind you. But it demonstrates the confidence exuding from the Sox suddenly.I think the biggest difference between the Sox now and the Sox a month back is pretty obvious. They have their ace back. Schilling was out for quite a while. And even when he came back, he was struggling a bit. On Friday night he went 6 innings and gave up only one run on a frugal 3 hits. With their ace back and feeling good. They're starting to feel good too. And now they have th...
Schilling Would Consider Devil Rays In 2008
2007-08-22 16:06:00
Curt Schilling acts as his own agent, and he has a list of less than ten teams he'd like to play for in 2008.  He actually prefers a one-year deal over two.  His main priority, as you might expect, is joining a team with a strong chance to win the World Series.  Almost any team in baseball would benefit from signing Schilling to a one-year deal. But an intriguing possibility surfaced yesterday.  Schilling would be open to playing for an up-and-coming young team like the Devil Rays.  He'd love to join their rotation and work with young hurlers like Scott Kazmir, Jamie Shields, Andy Sonnanstine, and Edwin Jackson.  That could actually make a formidable rotation.  Granted it may have just been a throwaway comment by Schilling, made mainly because the Red Sox are in Tampa Bay right now. Could you imagine if the Devil Rays raised their payroll from the $25MM range to $75MM?  They could add Schilling, maybe a Francisco Cordero, and even make Jorg...

If you were one of the few people at work yesterday and wondered why all the guys called in sick, here's why; Madden 08 was released, ready to quench the video game gridiron thirst of geeks and dorks around the country (myself included.) Veteran Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling gives up 2 hits, strikes out 8 in Tr

Curt Schilling pitched five scoreless innings Thursday, striking out eight in his second rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket. He gave up just two hits without a walk and mixed his pitches well, throwing both his curveball and changeup for strikes. It was another impressive outing for Schilling, who hasn’t pitched for Boston in more than ...
