Quinn budget announcement cuts no money from religion grants
2009-08-01 01:20:00
Pat Quinn on July 13, 2009, at the ceremony at Marshall High School at which he signed the disputed Capital Bill. Photo by Rob Sherman. Governor Pat Quinn announced, today, that he was cutting a billion dollars from the State budget.  However, not one single dime was cut from the recently approved State grants to places of worship, parochial schools or religious ministries.  I called Pat's office to ask why. The receptionist at the Governor's Press Office said that nobody was available to answer my question.  Everybody was in a meeting, but she would take a message and somebody might call me back by Monday. Five minutes later, my phone rang.  It was Robert Reed, from the Governor's Press Office. ...

How the CTA bridged its $35 million budget gap without service cuts or fare
2009-07-16 13:00:00
Using a combination of savings on labor, maintenance, fuel and the proverbial "other expenses," the CTA was able to avoid service cuts and more fare increases in filling another gaping budget hole -- this one about $35 million deep.Earlier this year, the CTA took action on the first $155 million gap by both trimming expenses ($15.3 million in cuts) and increasing revenues ($139.4 million, most of it by transferring capital funds to pay for preventive maintenance). Here's where the latest $35 million in cuts come from:1.  $12.5 million in labor savings from:Reduction in OvertimeDelay in Raises for Exempt EmployeesHiring Freeze in Early 2009Furlough Days2.  $5.8 million in savings on materials and fuel:Parking of NABI busesNew Buses3.  $16.7 million savings on "other...
Ohio Budget Cuts Mental Health Funding
2009-07-15 17:37:00
July 1st was a very important day at the state house in Columbus. It was the day that a balanced state budget had to be passed. As usual, politics got in the way of that and they subsequently passed a 7-day budget as negotiations continued. During week one, the impasse continued, and a second 7-day state budget passed. Negotiations continued....Since I have been in Boston for the past few days, I've been curious to see what was going to happen to the state budget. When I checked the Columbus Dispatch website yesterday, I was surprised that an agreement was reached. In reading the quotes from the politicians, it was a budget that "no one" was happy with." Then, why did you pass it? That confuses me.The big winner was not the citizens of Ohio, but the racetracks of Ohio. Yes, the racetracks - and probably the Governor (when is he up for re-election again?) According to the article "Budget Plan, Keeping Score," "The state's seven horse tracks will get up to 2,500 video lottery termin...

Advice to the CTA on how to make $35 million in cuts
2009-06-26 13:00:00
The RTA board today confirmed that reduced tax revenues blows another $35 million hole in the CTA's budget this year. So, what should the CTA do? First and foremost, listen to and consider its customers.Us.And I like what I've heard so far from President Richard Rodriguez on that front:"We have to take a look at who is going to be impacted, who is more transit-dependent and where we can afford to basically reduce service and not necessarily eliminate service."Here are my suggestions for cuts:First, look internally. Cut any open vacancies that may exist. Look critically at spending on consultants, travel, etc.. Every penny counts. In identifying service cuts, choose the least travelled routes. Cut back on frequency. But avoid at all costs...
Protesters oppose Quinn's budget cuts and tax hikes
2009-06-25 17:20:00
Per The Chicago Tribune, Gov. Pat Quinn tried to gain support for Illinois budget cuts and a proposed income tax increase on Tuesday at the Capitol in Springfield. The budgets cuts would come to some social services including the CTA in Chicago while Quinn has suggested to raise the income tax rate on individuals by 50 percent. The cut backs and tax increase have met stiff opposition among state legislators while citizens have turned out in Springfield to protest the governor's proposals. Twitter users in Chicago speak up: thenoth @GregHinz: Comptroller Hynes rips Quinn's tax hike plan. http://tinyurl.com/kt28xb I hope more people keep speaking up! 23 Jun 2009 from TwitterFox ibsuperwoman [expletive] pat quinn. illinois' unemployment is at a staggering...
CTA warns of more service cuts
2009-06-24 17:59:00
Per the Chicago Tribune, another round of budget cuts is in store for the city’s transportation system totaling $61 million. CTA officials say entire bus routes might be terminated and rail services reduced by 20 percent. The suburban Pace bus system will be looking at budget cuts as well, according to the article. CTA Chairman Jim Reilly stated, “Our rainy day fund was used up in 2007, so basically the RTA is making sure the transit agencies don’t spend more money than there is.” Chicago Twitterers are, needless to say, frustrated about the news, including Tony Peraica, 16th District Cook County Commissioner. tonyperaica “Doomsday CTA” cuts public service while plundering the public purse. Enough already. Fire the hacks. http://bit.ly/9JFHp via...
CTA girding for a new $35 million whack; service cuts loom
2009-06-24 13:00:00
The CTA is facing $35 million in service cuts due to a sharp reduction in tax revenues caused by the recession, the Tribune reports. CTA President Richard Rodriguez told the RTA "that riders could expect roughly a 5 percent reduction in service for each $10 million in new funding cuts," according to the news report. Ouch. Now this could really hurt. More from the report: Rodriguez issued a statement to the Tribune on Tuesday saying: "The CTA will continue to look out for the interests of our customers as we deal with the newest budget reduction proposed by the RTA. We assume the RTA applied the same financial diligence they expect of us to themselves and the other service boards.'' Just...
Ways To Treat Shaving Cuts And Stop Bleeding
2009-06-10 16:50:00
Shaving facial hair has been under practice for ages. Shaving gives you a face free of hair gives you a face which looks more young and romantic by highlighting the contours of your face. But when you shave the very sharp blade you use for a clear shave might cut your skin instead resulting in cuts and scars. Cut from a sharp blade though superficial is often painful. Once you learn better shaving techniques and get some experience of shaving, cut appear rarely.Generally the cuts from shaving appear because using the razor rather awkwardly and using a dull blade which is either over used or cheap shaving blade. One more reason is when applied shaving cream, the lather wets the hair and makes it soft and the skin wet so that the blade glides over your skin softly. No applying shaving cream or lather and not giving enough time to the hair and skin to become soft is also one of the reasons for shaving cuts. The stroke you make with your razor should be along the skin contours. Yo...
Cameron Diaz cuts a lonely figure as she takes a solitary swim in Hawaii
2009-05-28 12:23:00
Unlucky in love Cameron Diaz looked glum as she took a dip in Hawaii in the wake of her split with British model Paul Sculfor. The actress, who split with the former brickie earlier this month, appears to be holidaying alone in the spot popular with honeymoon couples. Looking tanned and toned, the 36-year-old wore a tiny green frilled bikini which left little to the imagination. And it seemed to be causing her problems as she constantly fiddled with the bottoms as she waded in the clear waters. There was no sign of Adam Levine, lead singer with Maroon 5, who she was spotted lunching with last week.

Sega Cuts 560 Jobs, 12 Games Could Suffer
2009-02-14 06:42:00
Sega hasn't responded swiftly enough to turbulent business conditions, the company says, so they're reducing "fixed cost" and axing upwards of 560 jobs. Whip that smile off your face, Sonic! PC WORLD -- Company revenues were reportedly down across the board, resulting in a revised fiscal forecast and losses of over $235 million when things wrap next month. Before Sega gets to what it's calling "voluntary redundancies across [their] workforce," they plan to close 110 of their least profitable amusement facilities, aka "arcades." After that, they'll dip heavily into their 3,000-plus employee pool and slash nearly 20 percent.Voluntary reductions? Probably severance packages, though in this climate, that's no doubt cold comfort to the one-fifth soon to be unemployed.Commensurate with those cuts, Sega's shrinking R&D by 20 points and consolidating its titles in development. No word on which titles those cuts could affect, but games currently in development include:The House of the D...

"Tax Cuts Are Their Jesus" In 2009 Too
2009-01-11 05:24:00
(Note: That's a quote from actor Bradley Whitford, formerly of "The West Wing," on "Real Time With Bill Maher" a couple of years ago - referring to the Repugs, of course.)U.S. News and World Report's Gloria Borger says the following (from here, in yet another "oh God the Dems are having another hissy fit even though the congressional Repugs did this for years and we ignored it" column)...If there were eight years in which to spend the money, it might be different. But the new administration is looking for what he describes as "a very quick jolt -- and that's hard to do without a combination of things."Do the corporate tax cuts help to bring in some GOP votes? Sure. But please explain why there is something wrong with that.Fair enough - I'll do my best. It's because tax cuts don't do a damn thing to stimulate the economy, that's why. They end up as saved income in the pockets of the investor class. But don't take my word for it. Listen to Paul Krugman, who tells us from here th...

Short Cuts: Ta'arof
2009-01-08 23:49:00
The two men ordered their kebabs and the waiter motioned for them to sit at a simple formica table. The tiny kebab restaurant was busy this evening on the eve of Eid-e Ghadir.Outside the first snow of the year was falling gently on the glossy black streets. One of the men adjusted the position of a steel frame chair and sat. It was a tactical slip which allowed his friend to open the play in a classic ta?arof gambit.?Right, so why don?t I go next door and get us some fresh juice, what?ll you have??Taken by surprise, the seated man had no option but to come back at his friend with a rather cliched rejoinder, ?thank you sir, but please be my guest.? His predictably vain attempt to get up and beat his opponent to the door was stopped by his friend?s outstretched arm.?Come now, I won?t hear of it, let me this time, melon? pomegranate? These are on me,? the standing man said as he turned and made for the exit. Perhaps his move for the door was a fraction of a second premature.?Ok, ok,? t...

BO, Tax Cuts And Greed
2008-11-01 01:23:00
I am selfish.  You are selfish.   All human beings are selfish.   Show mw a person who claims not to be selfish, and all you either a fool or a liar. BO is campaigning on a promise to give some ninety-five percnet of tax payers a tax cut.  Yet BO calls those who oppose his pie in the sky scheme selfish. Jake Tapper.   If opposition to paying yet higher taxes is selfish, BO is pandering to selfish voters by promising them a tax cut.    If BO were conststent, he would promise everybody a tax increase.   Then we could all be unselfish. Then BO simply is not very smart. [i]t’s that when we actually make sure that everybody’s got a shot – when young people can all go to college  Aside from a windfall profit to colleges (BO supporters?) to what end do we send everybody to college.  If something like twenty-two  percent of all positions require a college education, if you send a hundred percent to college, there will still be only two-percent of positions need...

Local file-sharing drastically cuts network load
2008-09-21 18:45:00
Data distribution under traditional, P2P and P4P architecture. (Courtesy of Doug Pasko and Laird Popkin)The 160-mile download diet: Local file-sharing drastically cuts network loadEver since Bram Cohen invented BitTorrent, Web traffic has never been the same. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, however, is a matter of debate.Peer-to-peer networking, or P2P, has become the method of choice for sharing music and videos. While initially used to share pirated material, the system is now used by NBC, BBC and others to deliver legal video content and by Hollywood studios to distribute movies online. Experts estimate that peer-to-peer systems generate 50 to 80 percent of all Internet traffic. Most predict that number will keep going up.Tensions remain, however, between users of bandwidth-hungry peer-to-peer users and struggling Internet service providers. To ease this tension, researchers at the University of Washington and Yale University propose a neighborly approach to file swap...
