Lincecum wins Cy Young Award
2008-11-12 04:48:00
The kid certainly deserved it, and on Tuesday it became official. Tim Lincecum won the 2008 NL Cy Young award earlier today and won it in a landslide. He received 23 of the 32 first place votes and edged out Brandon Webb and Johan Santana to become the first Giant to win the award since Mike McCormick over 40 years ago in 1967. He had just received The Sporting News' NL Pitcher of the Year award as well as the NL's most outstanding pitcher award two weeks ago, so winning this award is no fluke. I had pushed for Lincecum to win this thing since August when he really separated himself from the rest of the pack. Lincecum's final line of the 2008 season looked like this: 227.1 IP, 18-5 record, 182 hits, 84 walks, 265 strikeouts, .221 BAA, 1.17 WHIP and a 2.62 era. Not bad at all for a kid who was pitching his first full big league season, what a way to start your career. Congratulations to Tim Lincecum as he made an otherwise boring season, watchable.

When Jake Peavy said it wasn’t about the money, he really meant it. After all, the Cy Young Award winner could have played out his contract with the San Diego Padres and gotten big money elsewhere as a free agent. As it is, the $52 million, three-year extension Peavy signed on Wednesday is the biggest ...

Cy Young Award winner goes to C.C. Sabathia
2007-11-28 08:05:00
The Cy Young award is a coveted award given to those who have some real pitching abilities. I am sure you have heard the news that C.C. Sabathia got the award and was able to get some serious props for getting it. While the numbers of this passed season may look like someone else like Lackey should have gotten it you have to take an overa5 Zoom(s)

Jake Peavy is the unanimous winner of the 2007 National League Cy Young Award after leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Last years winner, Brandon Webb, was the runner-up. “Obviously, I was elated. This is ...
Sun Rises in East; Peavy Wins Cy Young Award
2007-11-15 23:05:00
To no one?s surprise, Jake Peavy won the NL Cy Young Award today. The vote was unanimous, the crowning a achievement of a spectacular season is which Peavy led the National League not only in the traditional Triple Crown stats of wins (19), ERA (2.54) and strikeouts (240). In the latter two categories, Peavy was miles ahead of the competition: nearly a half-run better than Brandon Webb in ERA, and 22 whiffs clear of Aaron Harang.  Now, it?s not unheard of for a pitcher to dominate the traditional stats and still be challenged for the Cy Young Award. After all, wins are not really a metric as much a dated scoring construct, subject to the vagaries of chance. Strikeouts do not always track with performance?they?re a leading indicator, but anyone who watched Daisuke Matsuzaka rack up 200 of them this season wouldn?t use that figure to build up his case for shiny hardware. Even ERA, the safest of the triad, can be influenced by park, by a pitcher?s relief staff and, most importantly, h...

C.C. Sabathia beat Josh Beckett at last — albeit a few weeks later than he hoped. Sabathia won the AL Cy Young Award on Tuesday, topping Boston’s ace and two other worthy contenders by a comfortable margin to become the first Cleveland Indians pitcher in 35 years to earn the honor. Sabathia received 19 of 28 first-place ...
Josh Beckett Reacts to that Whole Cy Young Award Thing
2007-11-14 01:23:00
Josh Beckett would have been my choice for the 2007 Cy Young Award out of the American League. And you have to believe that a lot of others agree -- enough people where Beckett could have reasonably assumed that he was the favorite. I wondered how Beckett reacted to hearing he came in second, but

No, not this year...the voting, as I said in an earlier post, took place BEFORE October. WE know that Josh is the best pitcher in baseball....CC Sabathia knows it too! What a major gaffe by those who voted. Hey, we're World Series Champions, the best in the world, but as the famous words go...."HE WAS ROBBED!" WE WAS, TOO!

2008 AL Cy Young Award Candidates
2007-09-29 14:28:00
Here is a list of the Top 10 qualifying ERA title aspirants in the American League. In addition to ERA, is it reasonable to think the categories listed are enough to determine the AL CY Young award winner? If so, the Angels' John Lackey would win the award. Deservedly so. Personally I believe Boston's Josh Beckett will win given his 20 Wins and IP, Ks and ERA that are near the top of their resepctive categories. He was also quoted in The Sporting News as wondering what to do all the Dom Perignon teammate Curt Schilling gave him following his 20th victory. "I don't know what I'm going to do with it all. I'm a beer drinker," he said. I can empathize. Surrpisingly, I do not see the Twins' Johann Santana as having any case whatsoever. His victory total is lower than a couple pitchers with better ERAs and more IPs. Am I just reacting to what I sense is groupthink regarding Santana or is there still a legitimate case for his inclusion in the Al CY Young discussion? PLAYERTEAMIPSOWER...
AL Cy Young Award: Beckett or Sabathia? And Let's Not Forget Santana. [Addi
2007-09-22 20:19:00
The final stats aren't in quite yet. But we do have a pretty good sense of who might win the AL Cy Young award (the NL Cy Young is a no-brainer in Jake Peavy of SD). The two obvious candidates seem to be Beckett and Sabathia. In Boston, it seems to be a slam-dunk for Beckett. I'm not so sure. Here are their lines:W L GS CG IP H ER HR BB SO ERA *lgERA *ERA+ WHIP20 6 29 1 194.7 179 68 15 40 188 3.14 4.54 145 1.12518 7 33 4 234.0 230 83 19 36 205 3.19 4.41 138 1.137You can probably tell who is who. But just glancing at these stats, they are for all intents and purposes identical. Similar wins and losses. Similar Strikeouts. Similar ERA. Similar WHIP. There's one BIG difference though. One pitcher has thrown 234 innings and the other has thrown only 194 innings. That's 4 extra starts. And that's an average of 7.1 and 6.7 innings per start respectively. If you didn't know already, Beckett's line is the one on top and Sabathia's is the one below. It'...

As we near the stretch of the season, it's time to look at our Cy Young hopefuls. I'm picking out what I believe are the top 3 at this point. You can post anyone else you believe in comments. National League Jake Peavy, SD (18-6 2.39 ERA 225 K's) Brad Penny, LAD (16-4 2.88 ERA 131 K's) Brandon

Justin Verlander is confident, not cocky. The Detroit Tigers’ pitcher, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, will not come straight out and say he wants to win a Cy Young Award. But when asked about earning the honor sometime during his career, the fireballing right-hander considers it realistic. “I don’t think I’m teasing myself because it’s something for me to strive for,” Verlander said.
