Lincecum wins Cy Young Award
2008-11-12 04:48:00 The kid certainly deserved it, and on Tuesday it became official. Tim Lincecum won the 2008 NL Cy Young award earlier today and won it in a landslide. He received 23 of the 32 first place votes and edged out Brandon Webb and Johan Santana to become the first Giant to win the award since Mike McCormick over 40 years ago in 1967. He had just received The Sporting News' NL Pitcher of the Year award as well as the NL's most outstanding pitcher award two weeks ago, so winning this award is no fluke. I had pushed for Lincecum to win this thing since August when he really separated himself from the rest of the pack. Lincecum's final line of the 2008 season looked like this: 227.1 IP, 18-5 record, 182 hits, 84 walks, 265 strikeouts, .221 BAA, 1.17 WHIP and a 2.62 era. Not bad at all for a kid who was pitching his first full big league season, what a way to start your career. Congratulations to Tim Lincecum as he made an otherwise boring season, watchable.
Lincecum Makes Final Pitch for Cy Young
2008-09-30 02:05:00 The 2008 Major League Baseball season came to an end Sunday, and the Giants went off in style with Tim Lincecum throwing one more gem in a final effort to boost his Cy Young chances. The new face of the Giants' franchise posted his 18th win of the season by going 7 strong innings and striking out 13 batters and allowing only one run while defeating the Diamondbacks. His 265 strikeouts this season are the most by a Giant since I've been following them (early 90's and too lazy to luck up official historical stats) but I'd say that would be a Giants record as well. I posted my early final season awards here, and I think I am going to have to stick by the Lincecum pick for Cy Young, even with Johan Santana's late surge. Santana has Timmy in era, but that's it and I can't help but think that if Lincecum were pitching in with the Mets offense and defense behind him, he'd have won 20 games easy. The writers will likely choose Brandon Webb because of the fact that he won 22 games, b...
Lincecum for Cy Young?
2008-09-03 22:57:00 With the way he's been throwing the ball lately, it is becoming more and more clear that Tim Lincecum deserves the NL Cy Young Award as much, or more, than anyone else. He did get roughed up in Colorado in his most recent outing, but I don't think it's going to hurt his chance as long as he just finishes out the year with quality starts. Right now, Lincecum's numbers for the season are significantly better than the next tear of Cy Young hopefuls. His era is the lowest among all NL starters at 2.60 and he leads the league in strikeouts by a large margin. He also sports the lowest BAA amongst Cy hopefuls which I always look at as a biggest indication to a pitchers dominance. Brandon Webb, the guy who's been everyone's favorite for the award since his ridiculous start to the season, has seen his era go from 2.74 to 3.19 over his last two starts, and even though he leads the league with 19 wins, his other numbers pale in comparison to Lincecum's. C.C. Sabathia has been the best p...

Bartolo Colon Resembles Past Cy Young Form
2008-05-27 08:09:00 It is rare for a former Cy Young Award winner to sneak under the radar, but Bartolo Colon certainly has. Every team had its chance to pick this guy up as a free agent, but the defending champion Boston Red Sox are the team that was able to take advantage. Colon has won both of his starts this season, while allowing just 3 earned runs and 3 walks. While injuries have hampered him the past two seasons,...

Early AL Cy Young, MVP, And ROY Candidates
2008-05-06 12:31:00 Baseball Happenings has begun a dynamic feature that draws on the collective knowledge of the blogging community to provide intelligence on which players are currently considered the leading contenders for the big three baseball awards - MVP, Cy Young and ROY - for the American and National leagues. This week's AL voting should be available later today. Here is the way I voted. My biases for voting in the Cy Young and MVP awards lean towards those hitters and pitchers playing on contending teams. ROY determination is not tied are strongly to his team's record, but good rookies on expected play-off contenders will get additional consideration. AL Cy Young: Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels Chien-Ming Wang, New York Yankees With so many teams bunched around .500, giving Cliff Lee the top billing was easy. Once big winners like Santana and Wang stop winning 85+% of their starts, I expect Roy Halladay of the Tor...

An NL MVP Dark Horse & An AL CY Young Contender No Longer
2008-04-17 12:32:00 The Cubs placed their $136MM man, LF Alphonso Soriano, on the DL yesterday. What better time for manager Lou Piniela to make the best of this bad turn by setting a line-up to maximize the run production of his 3rd and 4th batters. To do so, Japanese import Kosuke Fukudome would move into the two-hole with Ryan Theriot leading-off. This would place two .350+ OBP hitters in front of 1B Derrek Lee and 3B Aramis Ramirez. A line-up change like this would automatically make Derrek Lee a dark horse NL MVP candidate as he would amass the RBIs necessary to impress the voters. A nice fantasy side effect would be a top-ranked 1B. * Cleveland Indians ace, C.C. Sabathia, made his fourth consectutive awful start of the 2008 season. It was the worst of the lot! Against the Detroit Tigers, C.C. allowed nine earned runs in four innings of work. While he allowed the same number of runs in his last start against the Oakland A's in 2/3s of an inning less, he ...

The 2008 AL Cy Young Frontrunner, Some West Coast Fantasy Notes Plus Links
2008-04-12 14:32:00 New York Yankees' ace, Chien-Ming Wang, took his efforts towards his third consecutive 19-win season one step closer by throwing a 94-pitch, complete game gem against the Boston Red Sox. At 3-0, he has to be considered the front-runner for this year's AL Cy Young. He is helped tremendously by the slow/horrible starts of Justin Verlander, CC Sabathia, and Erik Bedard. The Dodgers face a tough right-hander, and Joe Torre does what is obvious to everyone. he sits RF Matt Kemp and starts Juan Pierre in his place. Unfortunately for Torre's naysayers, Pierre went 3-4 and is now hitting .273. St. Louis Cardinals ace, Kyle Lohse, moved to 2-0 on the season with a two-ER effort against the San Francisco Giants. He did allow his first two earned runs of the season, so it wasn't all puppies and sunshine. Man, I just wanted to call Kyle Lohse an "ace". In their effort to run away with the NL West, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies to move...

Can Justin Verlander Still Win The Cy Young?
2008-04-08 12:26:00 While listening to the Tigers' sixth straight loss to open the 2008 season, I was struck by the thought that my pre-season CY Young pick, Justin Verlander, was about to open year with two losses in this, his first CY young award-winning season. That got me to thinking if Verlander's chances are doomed with an 0-2 record to dig out from under. Using Baseball Reference, I looked at the game logs of each of the past 94 Cy Young awarding winning seasons to see if Verlander would need a historic season to come back from an 0-2 hole to win the Cy Young. Starting with Don Newcombe's inaugural Cy Young season in 1956, I began to think Verlander would need to set a precedent to win the award in 2008. Then I got to 1969. Mike Cuellar won the award after begining the season at 0-2 (40 starts). OK, Verlander would be the first to do it in 38 years! That is history enough for the vast majority of people. (Read those my age of younger). And that sense of alm...

2008 MVP, Cy Young and ROY Winners
2008-03-31 11:36:00 Given yesterday's projected standings, I will do my best Jean Dixon impression and predict the MVP, CY Young and ROY winners for each league. Building off the assumption that MVPs and CY Youngs come from play-off contending teams, the group of players in contention are limited. The ROY won't necessarily be treated the same way, but one can't negate the press a rookie would get for contributing to a play-off run. AL MVP: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers: While he doesn't match Alex Rodriguez's HR total, he produces 140+ runs and finishes in the Top 10 for AVG to take the award. AL Cy Young: Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers: The only 20-game winner in baseball is the recipient of his team's incredible offense. Chien-Ming Wang wins 18 but doesn't sniff the award. AL ROY: Carlos Gomez, Minnesota Twins: In a backlash to the perceived Red Sox bias of ESPN, the voters select him over Jacoby Ellsbury, who leads-off for the Red Sox and plays good CF d...

Damn, I love me some old Cy Young winners
2008-03-29 04:29:00 So I managed to finagle an actual evening of baseball viewing today, despite a crying three month old in the background. Dodgers/Red Sox, even in spring training, was pretty nice (particularly in high definition). So, Bartolo Colon looked pretty good. He's fat and coming off an injury, but if fucking Yahoo had him available I might have added yet another DL'ed old pitcher. I'd have about nine starters by June. Of course, that might have been the half gallon of Live Oak Hefeweizen I was consuming at the time talking. And Juan Pierre? He had a two out, runners on second and third situation. A situation that any good hitter knows should result in a walk or a swing at a good pitch to hit. He tries to drag bunt and hits it too hard right at the first baseman. If it drops fair, no one probably would have scored. He basically surrendered the at-bat.For the love of Zeus, Joe Torre, start Andre Ethier.

Sun Rises in East; Peavy Wins Cy Young Award
2007-11-15 23:05:00 To no one?s surprise, Jake Peavy won the NL Cy Young Award today. The vote was unanimous, the crowning a achievement of a spectacular season is which Peavy led the National League not only in the traditional Triple Crown stats of wins (19), ERA (2.54) and strikeouts (240). In the latter two categories, Peavy was miles ahead of the competition: nearly a half-run better than Brandon Webb in ERA, and 22 whiffs clear of Aaron Harang. Now, it?s not unheard of for a pitcher to dominate the traditional stats and still be challenged for the Cy Young Award. After all, wins are not really a metric as much a dated scoring construct, subject to the vagaries of chance. Strikeouts do not always track with performance?they?re a leading indicator, but anyone who watched Daisuke Matsuzaka rack up 200 of them this season wouldn?t use that figure to build up his case for shiny hardware. Even ERA, the safest of the triad, can be influenced by park, by a pitcher?s relief staff and, most importantly, h...
