2009-08-29 09:31:00 Hurricane Bill didn't make landfall last weekend, and Tropical Storm Danny probably won't have much impact this weekend. It's been a rather uneventful storm season for New England thus far. So let's spice things up with a selection of tropical cyclone names from areas other than the humdrum Atlantic Ocean: Australian ...

Remanufactured Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner
2008-06-05 03:18:00 Remanufactured Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum CleanerWe have been using the vacuum for a few weeks now and we are impressed with how good our carpets look. It brought the heavy traffic areas back to life and I no longer think we need to replace the carpet. However, be warned that this is a heavy vacuum. Much heavier than I thought it would be. We have three stories total in our home which means a lot of stairs and using this vacuum on them is a workout. I also agree with another review that the hose is stiff and hard to stretch. Also, the dirt/hair gets clogged in the filter long before the dirt bin has reached its capacity. I dislike having to reach up to unclog it. Overall it is a good product with a lot of power and we have been impressed with the remanufactured version. We were looking at the new ones and we are glad we saved money by going with this option.

#200. Why Are Cyclone Victums Hungry?
2008-05-26 04:38:00 YANGON, Myanmar- Little aid has been able to reach the devastated Irrawaddy delta area since a cyclone killed more than 20,000 people and has left 40,000 plus people homeless. The cyclone hit the country with 150mph winds and more than 11feet storm water surges.Damage was also extensive that many are without power and the streets are littered with debris and fallen trees. As shops opened, many fights broke out due to hunger but aid groups and governments grow frustrated by their lack of access to the country.Internal U.N. documents showed growing frustrations at the long delay by the country's military junta.Visas are still a problem. Aid workers have waited for days to get paperwork to enter Myanmar.Associated Press reported that Rome-based U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that five states hit hardest by Saturday's cyclone produce 65 percent of the country's rice, which means there is likely going to be incredible shortages in the next 18 to 24 months. The Myanmar ...

Burma cyclone and China earthquake - Sai Baba?s views
2008-05-21 15:27:00 What is Sathya Sai Baba’s view on the huge current natural catastrophes in China and Burma, one may ask? Burma(Myanmar) cyclone linked to Global Warming...
2008-05-20 19:17:00 The hurrendous cyclone in Burma, which has been tipped to be amongst the worst natural disasters in history which left over 15000 deceased has links with Global warming, if Al Gore, an expert on Global Warming and ex-United States Vice- President is to be believed. His logic behind his claim seems to be pragmatic as he attributes this terrible occurance by mother nature to the rising ocean temperatures, courtesy Global Warming. Now we have the "ignorants" who claim Gore is trying to cash in on the loss of innocent lives to stay in the news. But let me remind them this is no ordinary bloke who's making headlines, he's a nobel peace prize winner. Wonder what bothers them when one is genuinely trying to alert people about something that's the biggest threat our planet faces. Even if what he's saying isn't true, do we keep on exploiting the Earth and wait to see if the effects of Global Warming exists? That's for the detractors to decide...
Cyclone Nargis--a "Grotesque" Disaster
2008-05-20 16:32:00 Yesterday, I wrote about Cyclone Nargis (Blog Post: Cyclone Nargis--Natural & Political Disaster), and ended my post will little resolved in my mind. This article from The Washington Post summons up my feelings on the recent natural disaster (turned political disaster) in Burma."THE STORY of Cyclone Nargis, which devastated much of Burma more than two weeks ago, long ago moved from the tragic to the criminal. It is now becominggrotesque."Diplomats from the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have announced they will hold a 'donor conference' in Burma's capital on Sunday. This will allow foreign ministers from around the world to preen and promise millions in loans and grants for 'reconstruction' that, if delivered, will enrich and empower the corrupt rulers of that unhappy nation. Meanwhile -- thanks to those same rulers--as many as 3 million people affected by the cyclone will still be suffering, and in many cases dying, because the regime refuses...

I was able to to spend plenty of time with her until yesterday morning when I woke up with my own dreaded lurgy. Now we’re both feeling sorry for ourselves and I need to keep my distance so she doesnt add what Ive go to her list of ailments. Ive set up the phone in my room so we can chat though . I dearly love my Grandmother. At nearly 95yo the reality of her not being with us for too much longer is getting closer to home. She’s decided she’d like to be around another 2 ...

Cyclone Nargis--Burma's Natural & Political Disaster
2008-05-19 21:14:00 Burma and its citizens suffered from a catastrophic natural disaster when Cyclone Nargis made landfall on May 2, 2008. However, the poltical disaster that has followed the storm has only compounded the loss of life and suffering. It has been more than 2 weeks since the initial onslaught of the storm, and NPR reports that children are most in danger as aid workers continue to fight to be allowed to enter Burma.Today, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held a news conference, at which they stated that Burma is finally ready to accept help from international aid agencies and is ready to admit foreign medical workers from Southeast Asian countries.17 DAYS after the initial storm . . . !On May 15th, CNN reported that the death toll could reach as many as 100,000. That number is nearly 5 times what the Burmese junta is claiming the toll to be.It is hard to say home many deaths could have been prevented if a government that cared about the lives of its citizens was in power...

News: From Cyclone Sidr to Cyclone Nargis - an aidworker's perspective
2008-05-18 13:08:00 An aidworker from Oxfam explains how the immediate effect of the cyclone devastation is only the beginning of misery for those affected. Those on the ground (in Myanmar) are estimating that at least 100,000 people were killed by the storm. The numbers are devastating, each one of them painfully reminding me what a difference an investment into disaster preparedness and early warning systems ? like those that have been implemented in Bangladesh ? could have made for the families in Myanmar.Surface water that people are used to drinking is likely to be contaminated not only by dead bodies and livestock carcasses, but also human and animal waste spread by floodwaters and overflowing latrines. The weather forecast for this week predicts more heavy rain, and even a new storm approaching the cyclone-affected area. With people?s resistance to disease already weakened after days of living in overcrowded conditions without food and proper roofs over their heads, the children and elderly are l...
