Habitat Protection in Cyprus
2009-11-03 10:18:00 I was really excited to get the quarterly edition of BirdLife Cyprus (the magazine of BirdLife Cyprus, as it’s always packed with informational goodies. One article in particular was worth sharing, by Campaigns Officer Eleni Zissimou. I wanted to quote from it, as it details the situation in Cyprus for Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and ...

Petition Against the 2010 Cyprus Budget
2009-10-30 10:39:00 In recent weeks researchers at the University of Cyprus and elsewhere across Cyprus have heard what the proposed 2010 national budget entails, and we’re pretty scared for our jobs now. The finance minister has delivered the budget to parliament, with proposed cuts to science funding of 75-80% for the coming year. These cuts would mean ...

Bird Poaching Still a Problem in Cyprus
2009-10-06 09:15:00 Charlie beat me to it, but Martin Hellicar sent me also the latest report to the Bureau of the Bern Convention Standing Committee on Illegal trapping, killing and trade of birds in Cyprus. The report is not good (emphasis mine): The situation on the ground in the Autumn of 2009 looks very bad, first results from ...

Birds in the Scope
2009-10-04 07:48:00 Found on the web, this clip has a cool feel to it, taking a view through a spotting scope with a camcorder. The effect is to give the sensation of actually being there, looking through the scope, which probably was itself shaking simply due to the wind. Moreover, the Demoiselle Cranes are just as you ...

Treatment of Birds in Cyprus
2009-09-09 12:00:00 Via BirdLife Cyprus I saw this: BirdLife Cyprus comment on the CABS trapping footage: The shocking footage of bird trapping in Cyprus in spring 09 publicised by CABS on the internet demonstrates most vividly the extent of the cruelty involved and – more importantly – the horribly indiscriminate nature of this illegal activity, which poses a very real threat to many bird species. Images of threatened species, such as the Wryneck Jynx torquilla, and endemic species, such as the Cyprus Scops Owl Otus scops cypria, are of particular note. BirdLife Cyprus fully supports any efforts that help publicise this problem and more than shares the concerns of visiting organisations such as CABS about the continuing extent of the problem. 2009-06-29 12:19:00 This is what most Cypriots think of when you put ‘birds’ and ‘a fun time’ in the same sentence. Either that, or eating them. Cyprus property 'is a great investment'
2008-06-02 02:00:00 Two holiday home buyers from Scotland have outlined the advantages of owning a property in Cyprus. According to Ian and Cathy Rutherford, purchasing a house on the Mediterranean island has proved to be a "great investment". Speaking to the Sunday Mail, they said this is because they have been able to rent it out during those times that it would otherwise be empty. Furthermore, they stated that continuing increases in house prices in Cyprus means that the value of their new home is going up. . Mrs Rutherford commented: "A similar apartment sold recently for about £20,000 more than we bought ours for, so it's a great investment too." She added that as soon as they retire, they plan to spend far more time living in their Cypriot property. This comes after the Independent said that Cyprus does not seem to have been negatively affected by the worldwide financial crisis. According to the newspaper, this development represents a "convincing case"...
