Daimler AG's head of sales and marketing, Klaus Maier, said yesterday that the city car will be available in China starting in the middle of 2009. For a while now, domestic manufacturers have been selling vehicles that look suspiciously similar to the ForTwo (some with a battery-powered drivetrain, see here and here). Daimler has apparently realized there's a market for the city car and Maier told journalists yesterday that, "I am happy to announce that Smart, the original micro compact car, is coming to China next year. A major part of those expenses will go towards alternative powerplants. Hydrogen and lithium ion batteries will make up a good chunk of these charges, and Zetsche claims that Daimler has made "a major breakthrough in battery technology." Regarding the heat generated by lithium ion batteries, Zetsche adds, "Daimler has solved the problem. 2008-03-08 14:12:00 At the Geneva Motor Show this week Mercedes-Benz has been showing a slew of vehicles with assorted fuel saving technologies. The collection has included diesels, hybrids, aerodynamic improvements, low rolling resistance tires and more. While GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz repeatedly complained that new U.S. fuel economy regulations would add $5,000-6,000 to the cost of new vehicles, Daimler is taking a different approach. The Germans haven't really discussed what the changes would cost. Instead they are simply saying that the new technology would be profit neutral. They plan to charge only what the changes actually cost as a premium. They don't intend to lose profits on fuel economy improvements, but they also don't plan to add any extra margin. While Daimler has yet to confirm the report, several sources are indicating that a deal has already been made between the two. The two companies have close ties, both with road cars and race cars. McLaren currently makes the SLR for Mercedes-Benz and M-B supplies McLaren's racing program with powerplants. In addition, Daimler owns 40% of McLaren. Reports of a possible buyout surfaced in August, and were rekindled again in December of last year. It was reported last year that the two companies will no longer be developing road cars together. Instead, Mercedes-Benz will use H.W.A. to develop its follow up to the SLR and McLaren is working on its own car — codenamed P11. If the deal for the other 60% of McLaren has already been inked, look for an announcement in the coming months.

It also reports that the Volvo Group has signed a letter of intent with Eicher Motors, India’s third largest CV manufacturer after Tata and Ashok Leyland, to set up a new joint-venture firm, which involves input cost of £172m on Volvo’s part, while Eicher will commit its truck, bus and component business to the new company. Volvo will transfer its Indian truck dealer and service network into the joint venture. The new firm employs some 2,300 people. Eicher built and sold some 24,300 light, medium and heavy trucks and 3,800 buses and coaches in the last financial year.
