Good news galore for Boston Red Sox fans the world over on this early Saturday morning. First up is last night's Fenway Park win, an 8-0 shellacking of the Chicago White Sox. Daisuke Matsuzka pitched his finest game of the season, going 8 innings and allowing only 2 hits while walking only 2 (that's way low for him!) and striking out 7. He was in command from first pitch to last. Mike Timlin pitched a clean and meaningless ninth. I've said many times so far this year that if Daisuke can begin a game with his control, which sometimes is so lacking, and maintain that ability to put the ball in the zone, he would have an amazing start. And that's just what he did. Great job, Daisuke.Now on to the Red Sox offense. Dustin Pedroia continued his unbelievable 2008 season by going 4-4, Big Papi had a 3 hit game and Jason Bay had a bases-clearing double. Daisuke Matsuzaka was completely ready to attone for his mediocre outing in his native Japan. And he did JUST that, and more! He started the game by striking out the first two batters, and except for one mistake to Cust, a home run, he sailed, he breezed, he cruised through 6 2/3 innings, giving up that solo home run while only surrendering two hits, walking none (what a change!) and striking out a convincing nine. The batting stars were Kevin Youkilis, who tied Steve Garvey's record with his 193 straight error-free games. THAT IS TRULY AMAZING! It's all come down to an 8:37pm Fenway Park start tonight for Daisuke Matsuzaka. After experiencing a season of unforgettable highs and noteworthy lows, he now has the spotlight shining directly upon him. And if he remembers to follow Tek's call of the game and mix up his pitches, utilizing his tremendous off speed breaking stuff along with an overpowering fastball, he'll be fine, just fine. He did that in his last start against the Minnesota Twins, using every one (or almost every one) of his pitches to baffle the Twins for 8 solid as a rock innings. At least until September 18th, Daisuke Matzusaka and Barry Zito will have the same ERA of 4.41.  This may be surprising to most people who have heard about the monstrousity of a mistake the Giants committed by giving Zito $126 MM - quite possibly the worst contract since Colorado gave Mike Hampton 8 years and $121 million dollars in the 2000-01 off-season so his children can attend better schools in the Denver area.   Fortunately for the Red Sox, the $103+ MM they have committed to Dice-K goes unexamined.  (And if Dice-K can win the CY Young in any of the next few seasons, unlikely, the value will increase by $4MM.) The question is why not.
