Pirates reliever Damaso Marte involved in car accident in Dominican Republi
2008-01-30 02:21:00
Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Damaso Marte was involved in a car accident Tuesday but did not suffer any serious injuries, an official from his winter league team said. Marte complained of discomfort in his neck after the accident, said Fernando Ravelo, general manager of the Licey Tigers. Ravelo said that the team will monitor Marte’s health ...
Rosenthal's Latest: Figgins, Helms, Affeldt
2007-12-09 03:57:00
Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. The Angels are telling teams they will only consider trading Chone Figgins if they find a third baseman.  If Figgins does hit the market, figure on the Cubs getting involved. The Marlins offered Scott Nestor to the Phillies for Wes Helms, if the Phils paid $1.8MM of the $2.9MM owed to the third baseman.  The Phils passed.  Jeremy Affeldt already has a four-year offer in hand, so he's now looking for five years.  Jeez.  Teams known to be in on Affeldt: the Yankees, Rays, and Astros.  Affeldt's agent has contacted the Mariners, trying to sell him as a starter.  He grew up in Washington state. The Mets like the Pirates' Damaso Marte, if the Pirates lessen their demands. The Yankees, Phillies, Braves, and Astros are interested as well. showad();
The Mahay Market
2007-12-06 00:27:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:25pm: The Braves will at least have a discussion with Mahay as a courtesy.  They won't sign him unless his price comes down.  MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Yankees are the frontrunner, in contrast to Sherman's note below. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:45am: Joel Sherman says the Yankees don't like the price for Mahay and are considering alternatives such as Damaso Marte or John Grabow. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:55am: According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays are "firmly in the mix" for popular 36 year-old lefty reliever Ron Mahay.  Four other teams are involved - the Yankees, Royals, Giants, and Astros. I still haven't heard San Francisco's rationale to entertaining a three-year, $12MM pact for a 36 year-old reliever.  The Royals being in the mix is a tad perplexing as well. showad();
Pirates Trade Rumors
2007-07-27 22:39:00
Time for a Pirates roundup.  They deserve some love here at MLBTradeRumors. Dejan Kovacevic reports that Salomon Torres's grievance against the Pirates may prevent the team from trading him.  On the off chance he wins the grievance, he would become a free agent and the acquiring team would be screwed.  While that scenario is unlikely, it does look like this thing needs to be resolved before any deal is made.  I imagine that if some team wanted him badly all the involved parties could figure something out. The Bucs owe Shawn Chacon a phone call on whether they're open to negotiating a contract extension with him.  Their lack of action speaks volumes; even Dave Littlefield isn't going to sign Chacon for multiple years at $4MM+ per.  Chacon has managed to subdue righties this year and increase his strikeout rate significantly.  He's still got lousy control though.  He's a trade candidate but shouldn't bring much. On the other hand, Damaso M...
McAdam On Red Sox Trade Possibilities
2007-07-19 16:01:00
Yesterday, Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal posted an article discussing trade possibilities for the Red Sox.  Let's discuss. It seems that the Red Sox will add a bullpen arm despite the fine work of Manny Delcarmen.  Apparently they want someone with experience.  Eric Gagne doesn't seem likely, nor does Brad Lidge.  Instead, Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, and maybe Salomon Torres or Scott Linebrink could be acquired.  The focus is said to be on the Houston relievers.  Wheeler seems like a solid buy-low option.  You can add Octavio Dotel to the radar as well.  And let's throw Brian Fuentes into the mix.  UPDATE: Today, McAdam added Damaso Marte as a reliever the Red Sox like.  He says the price for Torres is "way too high" at present.  And according to the Boston Globe, Drayton McLane will not even consider moving Lidge. The Sox would get involved on a top-flight starter like Roy Oswalt or Dontrelle Willis.  Ca...
