Live Covers: Damien Rice (Hallelujah cover 1443)
2008-03-22 01:53:00 Is it possible to have too many covers of "Hallelujah"? It's a brilliant song and all, but yes, it's definitely possible. We overdosed on post-Cohen artists wailing about how love is not a victory march years ago, but every once in a while a cover is good enough to make us reconsider. Witness Damien Rice's amazing cover at Leonard Cohen's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. It's the best post-Buckley cover that we've heard so far (Rufus Wainwright's version being his only real competition for the title), because he understands the song so much better than most musicians that attempt it. Most singers try to pump up the big notes as much as possible and make the song sound forced, but people loved Buckley's because of the way he took his time and let the song flow organically. Damien Rice follows this approach as much as he can given his time restraints, and delivers one of the most genuine performances of the song to date.

2007-12-19 19:58:00 I have been playing my guitar a lot more lately and trying to learn some of my favourite songs. Anyhow, my latest accomplishment has been learning Cannonball by Damien Rice. This is excellent song. The lyrics are a bit different, but the tune and guitar work is great. I have a few methods I used to learn this song. Listen To It This is pretty much a given. You need to know the song inside and out. Not having to concentrate on lyrics lets you focus on the music style. Get A Hard Copy Of The Lyrics and Tab This should be your reference sheet for learning the words and a place to scribble notes or chords onto. Not everyone will interpret the song the same way, so look for something that looks like your style or in your difficulty range. I went with this Cannonball tab. I'm really excited about this new material. Damien is possibly my favourite artist of the millennium so far and Lisa could be great on her own.So here's a seasonal a capella cover from Lisa, and her own version of Cannonball. I've also posted the Billie Holiday version of Don't Explain which Lisa covers, as does Cat Power on her forthcoming covers album.I really think the second Damien Rice album should have sold better. The record company blame the artist for refusing to allow them to do radio mixes until it was too late. I think they picked the wrong second single in Rootless Tree.
