Joe Cowley: Sox Interested in Dan Haren and Cliff Lee
2009-07-25 23:18:00
Joe Cowley from the Sun Times reported in a radio interview that the Chicago White Sox might be interested in acquiring Indians ace Cliff Lee or Diamondbacks ace Dan Haren. Cowley went on to say that Octavio Dotel mentioned he might be part of a "3 team deal" which would send Lee to the White Sox. Gavin Floyd is the name Cowley through out as the potential "centerpiece" of a Dan Haren Deal....
Dan Haren Silences Red Sox, Diamondbacks Win 2-1
2008-06-24 19:30:00
Dan Haren completely shut down the Sox last night. (AP Photo) I was fortunate to go to the game last night thanks in large part to Jeannine scoring some tickets through an ill co-worker. This was the first game I've...
Dan Haren pitches Diamondbacks to 5-3 win over Astros (AP)
2008-04-29 07:40:00
Dan Haren pitched into the eighth inning and hit an RBI double, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Houston Astros 5-3 on Monday night. Haren (4-1) scattered five hits over a season-high 7 2-3 innings and Mark Reynolds hit a two-run double for the Diamondbacks, who improved their major league-leading record to 19-7. Read the full ...
Diamondbacks? Dan Haren finishes spring with 7 strong innings in 8-4 win ov
2008-03-28 00:26:00
Arizona’s Dan Haren allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings and the Diamondbacks beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4. Haren struck out six and walked one, allowing the two runs on solo homers by Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye. “I felt really good. I wanted to make sure I went out there six ...
Dan Haren gives up 3 earned runs in 5 innings, Diamondbacks win 6-5 (AP)
2008-03-17 00:42:00
Arizona’s Dan Haren felt right at home in the cold and wet of Tucson on Sunday. “That’s a summer evening in Oakland,” the ex-A’s pitcher said after going five innings against the Chicago White Sox in his longest outing the spring. “That light mist, about 50 degrees.” The right-hander gave up five runs, three earned, ...
Supplemental Draft Guide: Dan Haren
2008-02-25 00:23:00
Unbelievably, I somehow managed to leave my paragraph long diatribe against Dan Haren off the Fantasy Hurler starting pitching draft guide.Dan Haren had a marginally better K rate in '07 as opposed to '06, and the exact same WHIP (1.21). Yet, his ERA dropped from 4.12 to 3.07. It's not as though his opponent's batting average against dropped precipitously, either (a mere .11 improvement). You've got to figure his true ERA is more like 3.60, accounting for luck and bad breaks, over the last two years. That's not a stellar number. So, basically, last year's ERA looks artificially low and is inflating his value pre-draft.Haren has also thrown a ton of innings in the last three years. Even worse, he's been hovering in the 3400-3600 range for pitches thrown. All of this before he reached the age of 27. As though these warning signs weren't enough, consider these names: Billy Koch, Jason Isringhausen, Mark Mulder, Tim Hudson, Barry Zito, Rich Harden. All of these pitchers (and ot...
Brandon Webb, Dan Haren give Diamondbacks potent 1-2 punch (AP)
2008-02-18 12:11:00
Several years ago, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling gave Arizona a 1-2 pitching punch that was one of the game’s best, and led the Diamondbacks to a World Series title in 2001. Brandon Webb and Dan Haren cannot be compared to that duo, at least not yet. However, they bring a potent 1-2 combination at ...
Slusser On The Dan Haren Trade
2008-01-12 08:00:00
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was recently named Rumor Royalty for the A's.  She answered a few questions for MLBTR for the series. MLBTR: Some have called Billy Beane's return on Dan Haren "quantity over quality."  Do you agree?  What is your opinion on the Haren haul? Slusser: My understanding is that the A's felt that Arizona might be the best match all along for Haren and that they received pretty much exactly what they asked for, so clearly these are prospects the A's valued highly, Carlos Gonzalez and Brett Anderson in particular. Maybe there's some belief the A's should have gotten one of the Diamondbacks' young big-leaguers, but that was never on the table. I'm not sure they would have done better elsewhere, and they got some quality and certainly quantity - which isn't a bad thing. Mark Ellis was a throw-in in the Damon deal, essentially; no one really noticed him at the time. He turned out to be the most valuable piece, long-term.
Arizona gets ace Dan Haren from Oakland, ships saves leader Valverde to Hou
2007-12-15 10:17:00
The Arizona Diamondbacks wanted ace Dan Haren without having to deplete their stable of young talent. Trading major league saves leader Jose Valverde in a separate deal solved that problem. The NL West champions sent six players to Oakland for Haren and then got three from Houston in return for Valverde. Read the full story. ...
Dan Haren: Not Worth the Price (Part 1)
2007-12-15 10:16:00
When the staff of FutureBacks.com heard that Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, and Emilio Bonifacio were being dangled for Dan Haren, we became concerned. Once we learned the final names involved in the eight-player deal between Oakland and the Arizona Diamondbacks, we became aghast. Dan Haren isn’t that great of a pitcher, and the ...
Dan Haren Traded to Arizona. Jose Valverde To Houston.
2007-12-15 02:24:00
The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired the Oakland A's ace, Dan Haren, for a boatload of their prospects.  The team also dealt UT Alberto Callaspo and their closer, Jose Valverde.  This makes December 14, 2007, quite a busy day the the Diamondbacks. OF Carlos Gonzalez, LHP Brett Anderson, OF Aaron Cunningham, 1B Chris Carter, LHPs Greg Smith and Dana Eveland  for Dan Haren and Connor Robertson. Royals AAA pitcher Billy Buckner for UT Alberto Callaspo Astros' Chad Qualls, Chris Burke and RHP Juan Gutierrez for closer Jose valverde. The Diamondbacks got the best player in Dan Haren.  This is usually a good start to any analysis of won wins a trade.  The fact the A's got no players who are likely to be one the Opening Day roster signals 2008 is not a concern at all.  One can only conclude SP Joe Blanton is next to go  with the possibility of Huston Street following. Under that assumption, the A's did a great job adding elite talent to a relativ...
Dan Haren Trade Analysis
2007-12-15 01:53:00
The first domino fell tonight as an ace starter, Dan Haren, was dealt to the Diamondbacks for a bevy of prospects.  I believe the D'Backs won this one.  Let's dig into the details. Take Haren, a horse of an American League pitcher, and throw him in the easier league.  The D'Backs got themselves a bona fide ace to pair with Brandon Webb, and they get him for three years at a reasonable price.  He makes a mere $16.25MM over 2008-10; he's worth at least three times that amount.   (Arizona also gets 26 year-old reliever Connor Robertson, who hasn't really conquered Triple A yet.) To balance out the immense value of Haren, the A's get six young players.  Four of them represent the #1, 3, 7,  and 8th ranked prospects on Baseball America's top ten for the team. Carlos Gonzalez, 22, is the stud of the group.  He can play right or center and has definite star potential.  However, he's no lock to become Carlos Beltran or Jeff Francoeur...
Dan Haren traded from Oakland to Arizona, Valverde shipped to Houston (AP)
2007-12-14 23:36:00
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired All-Star pitcher Dan Haren from Oakland and traded major league saves leader Jose Valverde to Houston in separate swaps involving 12 players Friday. Oakland also sent right-hander Connor Robertson to Arizona and received six players: left-handers Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith; infielder Chris Carter; and outfielders Aaron Cunningham ...
Andy Pettitte: New York Yankees don?t need Johan Santana or Dan Haren (AP)
2007-12-13 01:13:00
Andy Pettitte thinks the New York Yankees would do just fine without Johan Santana or Dan Haren. “If you add one of those guys, that would be great. I mean, they both have unbelievable arms and they’re unbelievable pitchers,” Pettitte said Wednesday. “But to say that we need that to be successful, that’s going to ...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana and Dan Haren
2007-12-12 12:44:00
Michael Silverman reports the Red Sox are not expected to make any changes to the proposals on the table.  This makes a ton of sense as there are no other teams willing to budge of their own offers.  Why go all Yankees-and-ARod and bid against themselves? The Mets appear to be the team willing to budge.  With a news stadium opening, the team could use the marqee value of Santana to sell what are likely to be more expensive tickets and concessions.  Does anyone but the Mets believe the group of prospects they have reportedly made available matches-up to those of the Red Sox or Yankees?  Certainly not SS Jose Reyes, who seems in favor of doing what it takes to get Johan in Flushing.  From this morning's Daily News:"We need another starting pitcher," Reyes said. "(Tom) Glavine's gone. We need another one, no doubt. If we can get Santana, whoa! That would be huge. You have to think about (trading young prospects). Santana is still young too. Let's see wh...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Dan Haren, Jed Lowrie
2007-12-09 14:22:00
While trade rumors about Johan Santana have quieted over the past four days, that doesn't mean there aren't nuggets of information being provided across the country that can be pieced together to get a bigger picture.  Sometimes that means there isn't really much going on, too. La Velle E. Neal III writes a well-placed source said the Twins have had some good dialogue lately with the Red Sox for Johan Santana.  Does that make the Red Sox more likely to acquire Johan or does it just mean neither side speaks as if their heels can never be undug from their current position? If his source is better than Phil Miller's source, then the former is more likely.  Miller writes Twins' GM Bill Smith said little has changed since he returned from Nashville. Bill Madden is becoming convinced Yankees' GM Brian Cahsman will not deal prospects to the Twins for Johan Santana because Cashman is totally committed to building a new Yankees' dunasty through those prospects, and Kevi...
D'Backs Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-07 23:25:00
The D'Backs' loss of Livan Hernandez should become official today when he declines their offer of arbitration.  That leaves the team with a rotation of Brandon Webb, Randy Johnson, Doug Davis, and Micah Owings.  The Big Unit is a question mark, so a starter must be acquired. Back on November 15th, Nick Piecoro noted the team's interest in Matt Clement and Bartolo Colon.  But the Diamondbacks are sticking to their no bonuses/no escalator clauses mandate.  So that pair will probably look elsewhere. Hiroki Kuroda received a three-year offer and a pitch video featuring Randy Johnson.  He'll visit Arizona next week.  If he chooses Seattle, L.A., or Kansas City, the D'Backs will have to move on.  It's rumored that the Ms added a fourth year to their offer. The big name is Dan Haren.  Jack Magruder says Arizona's proposal included two of Carlos Gonzalez, Emilio Bonifacio, and Brett Anderson.  Magruder believes the A's are also seeking Ma...
MLB Rumors: Erik Bedard and Dan Haren
2007-12-05 17:09:00
With the Johan Santan talks dragging on, attention will turn toward the Baltimore Orioles' Erik Bedard, and a couple of pitcher from the Oakland A's.  Here is some of the latest information on both fronts. Jeff Zrebiec and Dan Connolly reports there has been no change since Monday in talks dealing with Erik Bedard.  GM Andy MacPhail says there are a handful of teams who could meet the teams desire for young players.  Amongst them are the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds. John Fay writes the Reds' GM Wayne Krivsky may be willing to part with SP Homer Bailey in a deal for a high-end starting pitcher (read: Erik Bedard and Dan Haren).  If so, then this could be a surprise entry into the High Roller Starting Pitcher Sweepstakes.  The Reds do have some pieces with josh hamilton and Edwin Encarnacion who could combine with Bailey to make an attractive package. Geoff Baker reports the Mariners appear to ...
MLB Rumors: Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, Dan Haren and Ben Sheets
2007-12-04 14:50:00
Susan Slusser  Writes that Danny Haren is aware of the trade rumors surrounding him because he checks the internet all the time for fantasy football info and that he does not want to be dealt because he has a home and a baby on the way.  She also reports:The Tigers want Haren enough that they might be induced to part with outfielder Cameron Maybin and pitcher Andrew Miller, according to one source. Both would be on the A's wish list. Arizona is emerging as a viable trading partner even though it isn't likely to part with its young big-leaguers. Also mentioned are the Giants who have been in trade discussions with several teams, one of which is the Orioles.  Giants' GM Brian Sabean says both SPs, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, are "virtually untouchable," but pitchers Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez are being dangled to add hitting. . George King, in a possible fit of wishful thinking, reports the Yankees believe the Twins will either deal Johan Santana to the Yankees...
What Do the A's Want for Dan Haren?
2007-12-03 19:39:00
According to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, the Oakland Athletics have made it clear what they want from the Mets if they want to get Dan Haren.According to Stark, Billy Beane has said that it will take Carlos Gomez and top minor league prospect, Fernando Martinez, to secure Dan Haren in a trade.I found it a little surprising that Beane wouldn't require a pitcher in return since it appears he's wholesaling his entire starting rotation. If the Mets made this deal they'd in essence would give up their entire outfield of youth (Milledge, Gomez, Martinez).Long term what this means is that they'll need to make a deal next year to replace Moises Alou, and if Ryan Church has a bad season and bats .230 we might need to replace him as well. I'm hopeful about Church, but I'm cautious to give up both Martinez and Gomez. I'd much rather package in a pitcher or two instead of one of them.If the A's offer is legit it's not an unreasonable one, and you have to ask yourself is it easier to repl...
Red Sox Interested In Haren, Sheets
2007-12-03 07:07:00
Interesting stuff from Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal.  McAdam says the Red Sox are eyeing Dan Haren and Ben Sheets as alternatives to Johan Santana. Haren, we knew about.  Sheets is an intriguing idea though.  Maybe the buzz on him will pick up this week.  Sheets will earn $11MM in 2008, tops among Brewers (Jeff Suppan's deal gets scary in '09).  Given Sheets' injury history and expiring contract, the price for him might be fairly reasonable (say, A.J. Burnett territory).  Sheets had a full no-trade clause for '07 and may only be traded to eight selected clubs in '08. showad();
Day 121 And Counting
2007-11-30 15:10:00
From the constantly-updating Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com, and something to keep in mind when talks turn to the A's and Mets getting together to address the mets desire for starting pitching."Of all the clubs trying to trade for an elite starting pitcher, the Mets appear to be scrambling the most. The A's are not shopping Haren and Blanton, sources say, but will listen intently if rival clubs wish to acquire either or both in trades. What's more, the A's are no longer as interested in Mets outfielder Lastings Milledge and right-hander Aaron Heilman as they were when they tried to acquire both in a package for left-hander Barry Zito before the non-waiver deadline in 2006."
MLB Rumors: Dan Haren To The New York Mets
2007-11-29 01:37:00
No sooner do I go looking for Dan Haren rumors, then the New York media obliges.  Unlike the Johan Santana rumors, the ones surrounding Haren focus on the Mets and not the Yankees. David Lemon of Newsday writes the Mets will seek starting rotation help out West in the form of Danny Haren or Joe Blanton.  Given the Mets tried to get Blanton last year for a package of Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman, this seems logical.  While the price may be somewhat higher as each has logged more service time, this seems like a good fit.  Expect Haren's price tag to be higher than Blanton's, and Blanton may require more than Milledge and Heilman. Ben Shpigel of the New York Times focuses on Haren and simply states why:What could make Haren even more attractive is his affordability. Over the next two seasons, he is owed a combined $9.5 million, less than half what Santana projects to make annually when he signs his next contract. In 2010, Haren would be a downright bargain ...
Cafardo's Latest: Crawford, Haren
2007-11-15 14:50:00
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo has a new colum up this morning; let's check it out. The Carl Crawford/Cubs thing won't die.  Cafardo says the Cubs are after him, possibly offering a package starting with Rich Hill and Carlos Marmol.  This rumor originated with Bruce Levine a few days ago, though Roger Mooney dismissed it yesterday. While the Red Sox have discussed Miguel Cabrera with the Marlins, Cafardo believes they might instead be eyeing a blockbuster for Johan Santana or Dan Haren.  As if the Red Sox need more pitching. showad();
Duchscherer To The Rotation?
2007-10-17 16:50:00
According to Buster Olney, the A's are thinking about moving 30 year-old Justin Duchscherer to the starting rotation.  Duke hasn't started a big league game since 2003 (he started 20 in the minors that year).  His 2007 season ended in July as he opted for surgery on his arthritic hip.  He's battled elbow, triceps, neck, and back problems in the past. Why is this relevant to rumor junkies?  Because even if Duchscherer and Rich Harden are health question marks, more starting pitching depth increases the chances of a Joe Blanton or even a Dan Haren trade this winter.  As I mentioned in my A's Needs and Luxuries post, Billy Beane's best attribute seems to be digging up underappreciated starters.  Beane could trade one of his front-end rotation guys for a shortstop, third baseman, and/or top pitching prospect.  Chin-Lung Hu and Andy LaRoche would be a sweet bounty.
