What's with those Florida Teams? [Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla]
2008-05-30 11:00:00 Oh, those first place Florida Teams! The Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays are both having stellar seasons, and leading their respective divisions. How is it that the teams from down South can dominate their northern rivals? The first key to Florida's success is Hanley Ramirez, who belonged in conversations with Chase Utley in April but has actually faded in May. Still, project his numbers over a whole season and you've got outstanding five-category production. The good news about Ramirez is that his walk rate is up, but the bad news is that he's striking out 25% of the time and his slugging percentage is way down (even though he's still hitting homers, he's barely hitting any doubles). His May slump could potentially - hopefully - be attributed to manager Fredi Gonzalez moving him into the third spot. However, he was moved back to leadoff last week, and so far hasn't set the world on fire (.690 OPS). Still, Ramirez is one of the game's great hitters, and there's no doubt he...

Vote Early, Vote Often
2008-05-28 23:01:00 is currently leading all National League shortstops in All-Star voting. With more than a month to go, Hanley has 268,386 votes — a ~12K vote lead over second place, and now 2-years older, Miguel Tejada of the Astros. Considering how few people show up at Joe Robbie Stadium, it looks like ...

Dan Uggla leads Marlins to DH sweep of Giants (AP)
2008-05-26 04:57:00 Dan Uggla likes batting with the game on the line. His teammates want him up in those situations, too. Uggla hit a bases-loaded, two-out single in the ninth inning to help the Florida Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Sunday for a doubleheader sweep. “Any situation, any pitcher, any count, he is the guy ...

Contract Window For Miguel Cabrera?
2007-11-09 21:05:00 MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says the Miguel Cabrera trade talks are heating up. As you know, Cabrera is under team control for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He might become more enticing if the acquiring team can talk to his agent prior to completion of a trade, with a long-term contract in mind. As far as I can tell Cabrera is represented by Arn Tellem and Fernando Cuza currently. Frisaro says the Angels and Dodgers are in the lead for Cabrera. The Yankees, White Sox, Indians, and Tigers are also in the mix. However this Paul Hoynes article seems to indicate the Indians are fading on Cabrera. And I think it's questionable whether the White Sox have the goods. Frisaro doesn't include the Red Sox, which jives with Michael Silverman's info today. Peter Gammons says the Red Sox could get Hank Blalock in a Coco Crisp deal but aren't ready to do that right now. It's known that the Marlins want Howie Kendrick from the Angels; Ken Rosenthal firs...
