Dark Days 2008: Finale
2008-04-09 08:25:00
First I want to thank everyone that participated in both the first half of the challenge and those that saw it all the way through. You made it possible, you made it happen. You collectively have made a difference. Not just for your own families, but for all the readers that have been checking in ...
Dark Days 2008: Recap #6
2008-03-26 06:55:00
It’s been a busy two weeks around here. Lots of house work, outside work, unpacking and regular life. Our local eating has been limited to what’s in the freezer and pantry and the few things that I’ve been able to find at the store up here (potatoes, onions, garlic, pasta). Not that we’ve been deprived ...
Dark Days 2008: Recap #5
2008-03-14 05:10:00
There’s been quite a bit of local cooking going on around here since we moved in, there just hasn’t been time to write about it. Meals have included Kahula Pork Roast (courtesy of Sugar Creek Farm), roast chicken, pork chops, tenderloin steaks and pasta with pesto. Most of those were accompanied by veggies from the ...
Dark Days in NY
2008-03-11 13:15:00
It has been a rough, cold winter for us here in NY.  We did not need the last bit of ugly news — that our governor known as a spirited reformer — actually has been maintaining a standing account for his regular engagements with lovely young things at about $5000.00 a pop.  It looks like ...
Dark Days 2008 Week #4: The East
2008-02-24 22:56:00
It’s Kim, filling in for the East this week.  I feel like a bit of a heretic making the update this time around, as I’ve had my least-inspired cooking period yet.  My meals still contain lots of local foods, though, and I feel re-energized by getting a peek at what everyone else is up to. My ...

2008-02-24 22:43:00
Hello everyone! Ellen from The Daily Grind here! I am excited to be the Guest Writer of the West this week (makes me sound like the Wicked Witch!). It looks like a few of you regulars are missing this week, so if I missed you, please leave a comment here or on my blog and ...
Dark Days Challenge-2008 Recap #4 Middle
2008-02-24 22:05:00
Hi Everyone this is Angie from Children in the Corn and I’ll be recapping the middle this week. It seems we’re a little light this week, so if I missed a post, just leave a comment here or at my blog and I’ll make sure to get you in here. After eating 6 servings of oatmeal that ...
A Valentine?s Treat
2008-02-14 05:40:00
Mike and I don’t really “do” Valentine’s Day. Never have. The most “into it” we ever get is going out to dinner. Usually Mike gets me a grocery store bouquet and I make dinner at home. This year we were going to do nothing, but then it turned out that Thursday night is the best night ...
Dark Days 2008: Recap #3
2008-02-12 06:42:00
A day late and a dollar short and again no photos of food here. Oh well. After weeks of feeling like we’re technically eating local but not fully participating in this challenge we really pulled it out this weekend. Well if you ignore the fact that yesterday’s dinner consisted of chili dogs and box cake ...
Dark Days: Eating Local in Early February
2008-02-08 06:10:00
I’ve been trying to catch up on everyone’s Dark Days posts so that I can do the recap this weekend (great posts so far!). And I was starting to feel guilty because it seems like the only local things we eat anymore are eggs and herbs. But that’s not really true when I think about ...
Dark Days Challenge - 2008 Recap #2 Middle
2008-01-28 05:20:00
Hello! I’m Anne from Green Leanings and I’m recapping for the Middle this week. Farm Mom is my new personal hero. It took some effort to pull myself away from her extensive list of fruits and vegetables grown last year (and new plants planned for the 2008 Growing Challenge) and her delicious-looking homemade whole wheat ...
Dark Days Challenge - 2008 Recap #2 West
2008-01-28 03:11:00
This guest post is coming to you from Melinda, at Elements In Time in Geyserville, California… who has never used WordPress before, and hopes that she can create a post even half as good as Laura’s wonderful recaps!   Well, it’s raining out here in the West, so it has been a pleasure to stay inside ...
Dark Days Challenge - 2008 Recap #2 East
2008-01-27 22:21:00
My first time recapping for the Eastern region and I’m already green with jealousy of the other participants! Kim has a source for local shrimp, which makes want to make her adopt me so I could have a local shrimp source, too! In the two weeks since the last Dark Days update, Kim has made ...
Dark Days Goes Simple
2008-01-26 05:42:00
It’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks. We found a house, listed our house, lost a house, found another house and now are putting the final touches on the second house (details tomorrow). Cooking is hard to do when you’re trying to keep your house perfectly clean at all times. I’m not a clean ...

Dark Days Challenge - 2008 Recap #1
2008-01-14 06:27:00
The past two weeks around here have been pretty crazy, but more on that tomorrow. Our dark days meals since January 1st have been pretty varied. I’ve got four worth reporting on, so bear with me. First was a pot roast made on the stove in the Dutch oven. The chuck roast was from the freezer, ...
Dark Days Challenge Re-Launched
2008-01-10 07:03:00
With the poll results well in, we will be continuing on with the Dark Days Challenge at least until the end of March and maybe longer. These are the participants as reflected on the poll. If you’re in and I missed you, please add your name in the comments or drop me an email at ...
Dark Days Challenge Poll
2008-01-02 21:17:00
Alright, based on the comments on this week’s wrap-up and the emails I’ve gotten, it seems that maybe we should keep this going. If we do, I need some help making that happen, hence my first try at adding a couple of poll questions. ***** Note: There is a poll within this post, please visit the site ...
Dark Days Challenge - Weeks 10 & 11 Recap and Review
2008-01-02 07:58:00
Has it really been more than a week since I posted? Sorry about that. It’s been a bit nutso around here what with packing and house shopping and everything else. But more on that tomorrow. It’s been almost 3 months since the launch of the Dark Days Eat Local Challenge and what a journey it’s been. ...
Tilth & Squash scores a hit
2007-12-24 08:31:00
Last night Mike and I had dinner at Tilth. We were supposed to go to Phoenix for Christmas - but didn’t so that we can spend the whole week getting our house in order - and dinner at Tilth was our special celebration for just the two of us. Even though we’ll now be spending ...
Cider Braised Ham Roast
2007-12-21 07:08:00
Turns out that you can cook a fresh ham roast just like you can cook a pork shoulder. Once I found that out from a very helpful internet friend, then the world was my oyster. Or at least my pork roast. I looked around for a while and finally decided to try a recipe from ...
Dark Days Challenge - Week #9 Recap
2007-12-18 06:46:00
Last week was tough for us, food wise, as I didn’t have time to go to the farmer’s market. I think the only really completely local dinner we had was eggs and bacon. The rest of the meals we cooked were between 50 and 75% local, but none were really the 90% I strive for. This ...
Today Is One of Those Dark Days in History

Dark Days Challenge - Week #8 Recap
2007-12-10 02:37:00
This has been an out-of-sorts week around here. With my last minute trip home last weekend, I didn’t make it to the Saturday farmer’s market. Which left us with what was in the fridge and the few local ingredients I could pick up at the grocery store nearest our house. So our only all local ...

Dark days for Mr. Brown
2007-11-30 18:32:00
After the scandals of recent weeks, it would be suprising if the latest YouGov poll in The Daily Telegraph did not put the Conservatives ahead of Labour. However, the results indicate that dissatisfaction runs deeper than might be assumed:The lead - the Tories biggest since Baroness Thatcher's heyday in 1988 - demonstrates the extent of the crisis now gripping Gordon Brown's government in the wake of the run on the Northern Rock bank, the loss of 25 million child benefit records and the party funding scandal...The poll also reveals growing unease among the electorate over the prospects of an economic downturn - and a distinct lack of confidence in Mr Brown's ability to deal with the consequences. The results indicate the depth of this dissatisfaction. The Conservatives lead on both voting intentions and the forced choice question, by 11 and 7 percentage points respectively. The majority of voters are dissatisfied with Gordon Brown and disapprove of the Government's record. Labour...
Dark Days Challenge - Week #6 Recap
2007-11-25 20:44:00
I hope that everyone had a great holiday! As I mentioned, we had a delicious dinner and have really enjoyed the long weekend. We also had many local breakfasts, lunches and dinners this week that I won’t bore you with. And of course, we finally opened our first jars of dill pickles - mmmm mmmm ...
Dark Days Challenge - Week #5 Recap
2007-11-20 07:28:00
I’m a bad blogger. Or at least I played one this past week. I cooked a number of local meals, including an informal Sunday dinner for friends, but wrote about none of them. On Sunday we had meatloaf, mashers, broccoli and salad - all of it made from local ingredients. I used my favorite meatloaf ...
Dark Days Challenge - Week #5 Recap
2007-11-19 17:23:00
Is coming soon. It was a busy weekend. The recap is about 75% finished and I should have it up later tonight. Sorry for the delay.
dark days
2007-11-17 20:09:00
Sometimes I masochistically peruse the dress section on Net-a-Porter to see what I can't buy. It's a bit like strolling through a pricey art gallery, I suppose.I notice they're taking a lot of dresses that could easily stand alone or function as summer dresses, and pairing them with dark accessories (belts, booties, tights and bags). It's a good idea if you aren't ready to pack up all your warm weather dresses. (Tear a page out of Kate Bosworth's book by adding big black boots and tights.)Anna SuiMulberryThis Issa mini kimono is too lovely not to post. Although it's stunning as it is, it's a bit too chipper for the darker winter months. It, too, could be made to function by pairing it with black tights and black shoes. (But because I'm not subtle and I like color, I'd also wear it with excessive amounts of gold jewelry, red lipstick and red nails.)IssaSource

Dark Days Challenge - Week #4 Recap
2007-11-12 01:09:00
This week was a slow return to normalcy for me. I’d forgotten just how much worse jet lag is coming back West than it is going East. It’s only since yesterday that I finally feel like I’m back in the land of the living. We ate wildly local at the beginning of the week, enjoying chicken ...
Dark Days Week #4: Meals 1, 2, 3
2007-11-08 06:01:00
Still no progress on the Italy recap front - I finally decided to go ahead and upgrade my Flikr account and figured out how to add a slide show here, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I’m targeting Saturday as the day to deal with photos. So look for my recap of Milan and ...
Dark Days Challenge - Week #3 Recap
2007-11-05 06:13:00
I’m in the middle of downloading the approximately 1400 photos that I took in Italy - thank goodness for digital, I can’t imagine what it would cost me to process that much 35mm film… I don’t have a specific meal to report, but suffice it to say that we ate some of the most fabulous ...

Greetings, intrepid local food hunters! I?m thrilled to help Laura out by filling in on this week?s Dark Days update while she enjoys Italy. I?m sure she?s eating very well! Writing this update has given me a great excuse to hang out in my PJs on a rainy morning and take a look at all your ...

We now have 18 participants for the Dark Days challenge - wow, I really didn’t expect that many people to want in - so glad to meet everyone and I can’t wait to see what we all come up with for winter meals. I’ll post a recap here each Saturday with a review of what everyone is ...
Dark Days Hits Critical Mass
2007-10-12 21:34:00
With 9 of us now participating, I’ve created a new page just for the Dark Days Eat Local Challenge. I’ve also fixed the apparently bad code for the squash button. You can get it on the original Dark Days post or the new page. The new page lists all of the participants, and I’ll link to ...
Dark Days of Winter Eat Local Challenge
2007-10-09 07:23:00
photo courtesy of iStockphoto I’ve been thinking and pondering on the fact that eating local is easy during the spring and summer. The farmer’s markets are in full swing. There are greens and berries, veggies and fruit, potatoes and fish. And I still feel really good about our participation in the One Local Summer Challenge and ...
Dark Days Challenge - Meal #1
2007-10-09 06:05:00
Hmmm, so before I decided to announce a personal eat local challenge and hold myself accountable, we had our first all local meal of the fall season. The search for ingredients was pretty painless, between the steer in the freezer, my trip to the Edmond’s market and a stop at the grocery store, we had everything ...
Dark days of blogging
2007-09-19 19:26:00
I once thought that it would be kind of cool to have a blog if I were dying, to chronicle the last stages of my life. I didn?t give much more thought to this because, as far as I know, I?m not dying. But check this blog out. I can?t decide if it?s genuine. Charles Highsmith, ...
Dark days for NBA's Stern
2007-07-25 16:10:00
Being commissioner of a major sports league is generally a pretty good gig. You get great seats to events whenever you want, rich people have to listen to you and you become a household name. These days, however, it sucks to be the big boss in any of our biggest sports. In the NFL, Roger Goodell has to deal with the Michael Vick dogfighting indictment. That, of course, is the biggest test of his new conduct policy that has seen Pacman Jones, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson be suspended. In Major League Baseball, Bud Selig has Barry Bonds and the ongoing steroids investigation to deal with. With Bonds just two home runs from tying Hank Aaron's all-time record, and more steroid accusations being hurled at him, Selig is grudgingly attending games while trying to distance himself from the surly slugger's pursuit of the record few really want him to have.Neither of those guys, however, face as big a problem as NBA Commissioner David Stern. The allegations that referee Tim Donaghy bet on NBA ...

Sunshine - Dark days are coming.
2007-05-12 15:30:00
I have to admit that sci fi movies haven’t seemed to preocupy movie producers anymore in recent years, so a good science fiction movie hadn’t come out in quite a while. THis is not the case for Sunshine, which stands out in its genre as a good and interesting movie. The plot is quite simple and ...

For Uganda NRIs: A grim reminder of Idi Amin's dark days
2007-04-18 06:46:00
By Kul Bhushan, : The worst NRI nightmare is Idi Amin's Uganda," recalled Shanti Lakhani in Leicester, UK. 'A glimpse of the same horror was repeated last week.' No matter where they live, all non-resident Indians (NRIs) recoil with panic at the brutal treatment by the Ugandan despot Amin.
