David Byrne: Playing the Building Opening
2008-05-31 16:00:00 "Creative Time presents Playing the Building, a 9,000-square-foot, interactive, site-specific installation by renowned artist David Byrne. The artist transforms the interior of the landmark Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan into a massive sound sculpture that all visitors are invited to sit and 'play.' The project consists of a retrofitted antique organ, placed in the center of the building's cavernous second-floor gallery, that controls a series of devices attached to its structural features?metal beams, plumbing, electrical conduits, and heating and water pipes. These machines vibrate, strike, and blow across the building?s elements, triggering unique harmonics and producing finely tuned sounds." Read More...Digg this | Email to a friend | Reddit

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
2008-01-16 08:47:00 One of the benefits of moving house is that it forces you to go through your stuff. Yesterday I dug out a box of cassettes, many probably unplayed for over 2o years. One of the treasures was My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by David Byrne and Brian Eno. I remember thinking that it was a revelation when I heard it for the first time. The musical collage of electronic sounds overlayed on real world speech and singing is dramatic. It was considered ground breaking at the time and influenced many other musicians. After getting over the issue of what a cassette tape was, the kids settled down to listen in the car as we drove to sports camp. At the end, they asked to hear it again because they really liked it. Some of the tracks reminded me of the computer games that Ryan loves to play. All very familiar given the number of times I played it in the 80s.It was rereleased recently with new tracks and some politically correct edits to address concerns by Islamic Groups who objected to singing t...
David Byrne sounds off on what is really happening to the music industry
2007-12-30 18:41:00 The music industry has been blaming technology (most recently broadband enabled file sharing) for all of its woes. The RIAA has become a relentless litigator for its big music company members, now even suing individuals for copying content from CD’s they own onto other devices for personal use. They may be correct in assigning blame to digital technology. It has changed the landscape in which they have controlled and distributed content. Until broadband enabled new channels, distribution had remained much the same as it was in the time of lacquer discs and the Victorola. Now, with increasing frequency, artists are retaining the rights to their their material and doing their own distribution. This has all been enabled by technology, and more significantly broadband. Musicians and consumers suddenly gained control of distribution as well as how and where content could be used. David Byrne recently wrote the best overview of the changes in the music industry I have read to date. ...

david byrne deconstructs ikea
2007-11-12 07:58:00 from david byrne's journal......My sister had the idea that we would take my parents to IKEA to look at possible replacements for their kitchen cabinets, counters, sinks and storage. I loved the idea of a trip to IKEA since I’d never been there ever. And as it was to be a look-see and not a buying trip, the pressure would be low. I was looking forward to the famous Swedish meatballs for lunch too. read more.

David Byrne - Rei Momo
2007-07-03 10:08:00 David Byrne’s first release after the breakup of the Talking Heads is not only a logical progression from their final album, ‘Naked’, it’s his first truly pop-oriented solo work. Built on his recent fondness for Latin and Afro-Cuban musical styles, ‘Rei Momo’ is half music lesson (songs are sambas, cumbias, etc.) and half late-period Talking ...
David Byrne and Daniel Levitin met to discuss music

For 10 years, Daniel Levitin worked as a session musician, sound and recording engineer, and record producer. Recently at STK, in New York's Meatpacking District, the two traded ideas about music, language, and memory.

Arboretum, David Byrne
2007-01-26 15:41:01 Why Indeed? What Indeed? Byrne’s Arboretum As sensible beings we are constantly doing nonsensical things and making non-sensible connections. Great strides in science have been made this way. Poetry relies on it. Peace makers and warmongers alike argue with irrational potency. I depend on it to find my keys every morning. With Arboretum, David Byrne has penned a collection of similarly diagrammed mind maps which seemingly random ideas with other seemingly random outcomes. To paraphrase, he argues that what we “think” is a rationalization of what we already “feel,” or our animal urges. And thus, if it can be succesfully argued that “we feel what we believe ’til the day that we die”, and that our brain is simply a rationalizing agent that chooses whatever language is at hand to prove the rightness of those immutable feelings or animal impulses, then all is nonsense. Scientific method is as rational as poetics. Nonsense can move to s...

Brian Eno e David Byrne - O Arbusto e Os Fantasmas Vivos
