Books I Want To Read
2008-04-22 13:21:00 This is the most self-explanatory title I may I have ever written. If I continue this trend, the title of my next post will be "Please Buy My California Tortilla Burrito Coupons. I?ll Give You a Great Deal." Anyway, there have been several times over the last few years when I have asked for suggestions on books to read. For the first time possibly forever, I?m not looking for suggestions. Instead, I figured I would share my list and see if anyone has read any of these books. In addition, feel free to share what books you are reading or books you recommend in the comments section. Maybe this will turn into a book club (well, maybe a book club where people suggest books)Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions by Ben Mezrich. This book may be better known now as the movie 21. I?m guessing that the book does not contain a line where Kevin Spacey?s character says "Don?t call me dude."Absurdistan by Gary ShteyngartRecommended by one of m...

Seeking Book Suggestions
2007-08-23 13:13:00 Every few months, I ask for new book suggestions since I tend to go through books rather quickly during my bus and Metro commute. Today is one of those days. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment or e-mail me at seanramblings at yahoo [dot] com.Of course, asking for book suggestions can be vague since you probably have no idea what I like to read. Therefore, here is a list of books I have read over the past few months, which I hope will help:- The Harry Potter series- ?Can I Keep My Jersey? 11 Teams, 5 Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball Vagabond? by Paul Shirley- "Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas" by Chuck KlostermanActually, I can't remember what I read before I started to re-read the Harry Potter series. I'm also a big fan of David Halberstam, Kurt Vonnegut and Nick Hornby. Thanks for your help!

David Halberstam and Kurt Vonnegut
2007-04-26 03:21:00 In just the past few weeks, two of my favorite authors passed away. I was first introduced to both David Halberstam and Kurt Vonnegut in college. Although I do not remember the specific class (one was for a history course, the other politics), I certainly remember reading both Vonnegut?s ?Player Piano? and ?Galapagos.? I liked Vonnegut?s style of writing and the ideas presented in his books. Over the years, I?ve probably read another half dozen of his books. I don?t exactly know how to describe his books, but there were always parts that made me smile and parts that made me think. So it goes. By the way, Vonnegut has a terrific cameo in ?Back to School? starring Rodney Dangerfield.I read Halberstam?s ?The Fifties? in one of my favorite college classes, a senior level history class about United States history in the 1950s. What struck me most about the book was the way Halberstam took nearly every part of the decade and wrote in-depth chapters for each topic. There was such ...

Author David Halberstam Dies at 73 [J. Mark English]
2007-04-24 07:05:00 When I started this sports blog a year ago I knew that its strength would not be built upon my own writing skills. I never went to a journalist school, or even excelled in my English classes in college. Despite my last name, English is not my area of expertise. Reading the sports sections of great papers such as the New York Times and the Washington Post has given me a much fonder appreciation of the writings these papers produce. The way they can take a moment in sports, and put it into a context that can soften the blow of a loss, and raise the thrill of victory. They allow reflection, and deeper meaning to the sports we follow fanatically. The great writers such as Murray Chase, or Thomas Boswell, allow us to take a step back and look at sports with a deeper awareness.David Halberstam was such a writer. Some of his better known books that he wrote were The Breaks of the Game, Summer of '49, Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the World he Made, Bill Bellichick: The Educ...
