2007-02-09 12:51:01 If you’re not doing anything tonight, why not check out an opening for one of the premier artists of the last fifty years? The East Yorkshire Landscape, David Hockney’s new show, is opening today (Friday) at LA Louver. The show consists of landscapes of Hockney’s native English countryside, including some large, multi-panel paintings. Here’s some of the press release: “In creating these paintings, Hockney eschews all use of photography, which standardizes color, flattens perspective and pushes the viewer away from things ? as he has stated, ?The camera sees geometrically ? we must see psychologically.? As such, in Hockney?s paintings, one is brought present into the landscape with an immediacy that is filtered through the artist?s own experience of place, both felt and remembered.” Personally, I’m more familiar with his photo collages than his painting, but it should be a good show. It's their still, airless, somewhat photo-realist perfection and 'orderedness'. The bleaching quality of the sunlight reminds me of the Australia:'A Bigger Splash', 1967 'Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy', 1969'Still Life on a Glass Table', 1971-2 'La Terrace', 1971I bought two books ('David Hockney by David Hockney' and 'David Hockney Photographs') and, looking back over them now, I am surprised just how many of the works from that period had gay themes - lots of naked guys, nudity often accentuated by tan lines (another Los Angeles-Sydney connection):'Man Taking Shower in Beverley Hills', 1964I particularly liked the works involving his then boyfriend, Peter Slessenger, cos they publically presented the intimacy of gay lovers: 'Peter and I lived to... |
